Hear me out: I would never advocate for a sunburn. I don’t even support tanning—just perfect your self-tanner routine then coat yourself with sunscreen. However, I can’t help but think that the sun-kissed flush exclusive to summer is the perfect beauty look. You know what I mean: rosy red cheeks minus the heat exhaustion, and the pinkish tint across your nose, but without the sun damage. No wonder blush is one of summer’s biggest trends. And now, you can get that romantic flush easier than ever with the best blush sticks on the market.

Featured image from our interview with Babba Rivera.

Why Blush Sticks Are My Summer Beauty Staple

In the summer, my makeup routine dwindles down to almost nothing. (Skinimalism is going strong!) When I’m traveling, I’m deliberately minimalist about the products I pack. But even when I’m home, I don’t want layers of product sitting on my face.

Simplicity is key—and so is versatility. Enter: blush sticks. This seasonal replacement for powder or liquid blushes is convenient on the go but also lasts longer and sticks easier to fresh-faced summer skin.

Comparing Cream, Powder, and Liquid Blush

Blush sticks are cream blushes that come in easy, pocket-sized packaging. You might be used to brushing on a powder blush to the apples of your cheeks, but cream blush is becoming everyone’s go-to for a rosy complexion.

Cream blush sits on top of the skin, letting you do more with less product. Thanks to its texture, it promotes an even, dewy complexion. While powder blush can crease and liquid blush can cling to dry patches, cream blush gives you a natural, glowy finish.

The Magic of a Multi-Stick

Another benefit of blush sticks is that they often are multiple products in one. Palettes are passé, but multi-sticks give you a cohesive wash of color for your cheeks, eyes, lips, and even the bridge of your nose. With all its many applications, you can rely on one product for countless looks.

The Best Blush Sticks for a Year-Round, Sun-Kissed Glow

I tested and reviewed the creamiest blush sticks for every makeup look, skin concern, and practical need. Ahead, you’ll discover blush sticks with SPF, the viral picks everybody’s talking about, and blush sticks that are, frankly, underrated. Read on for the best blush sticks to give you that summer glow in just a few swipes.

Rhode Pocket Blush Stick

Our verdict: The one that’s worth the hype.

Shade options: 6

Whenever Hailey Bieber releases a new product via her viral line, Rhode, the beauty world is rocked. This blush stick is no different—honestly, the hype just grows with every drop. And unlike other beauty brands that are all smoke and mirrors, these buzzed-about products quickly become mainstays in our makeup routines. Because yes, they’re that good.

This blush stick is a buildable pigment that glides on smooth and gives you an instant pick-me-up. I like the shade “toasted teddy.” It feels sophisticated while still being fun and flirty. Consider it the red wine of blush sticks that’s perfect for summer nights.

Glo Skin Beauty Cream Blush Stick

Our verdict: The best blush stick for layering (i.e., you need at least two shades in your bag at all times).

Shade options: 5

Camille (and every single last one of our editors) is obsessed with this cream blush stick from clean beauty favorite, Glo Skin. The shade options blend and mix perfectly. Camille likes to dot “Spark” high on the apples of her cheeks and across the bridge of her nose. Then, she goes back in with the shade “Desire” under her cheekbones, jawline, and around her hairline. For a foolproof, just-spent-the-day-in-the-sun glow, there’s no better pick.

Haus Labs Longwear Lip + Cheek Blush Stick

Our verdict: The best skin-boosting option that sensitive skin will love.

Shade options: 8

Hydrating and plumping, trust Lady Gaga to create a high-pigmented blush stick that plumps, hydrates, and soothes the skin. It’s formulated to boost collagen, and plump and hydrate the skin while reducing unwanted redness for the perfect amount of pigment. Best for sensitive skin or irritated skin, this is the best blush stick to give your skin some TLC after long days in the sun.

ILIA Multi-Stick Cream Blush + Highlighter + Skin Tint

Our verdict: The three-in-one favorite with countless shades.

Shade options: 12

One of the best blush sticks out there, this ILIA multi-stick can do it all. The skincare-first makeup brand makes clean products that look good without compromising your skin. This buildable blush stick is also a highlighter and lip tint. Dot it everywhere you need a bit of color and blend with a finger (my favorite application method) for natural, dewy coverage. The subtle iridescence will make you look radiant—never shiny.

Gen See Straight Flush Glow Sticks

Our verdict: Your answer to a perfect, sunless glow.

Shade options: 5

When a blush stick is literally inspired by the look of sun-kissed skin, you know it’s going to be good. These pocket-sized multi-sticks are our Managing Editor’s favorites. She dots the “Punch” high on the apples of her cheeks for a vibrant, but not overwhelming color. (Think: a punchy coral that’s perfect for summertime.) What’s more, they’re formulated with skin-loving ingredients like shea butter, vitamin E, and hyaluronic acid for a hydrated sheen and enviable glow. These sticks are so easy to layer, you’ll be tempted to buy every shade.

Westman Atelier Cream Blush Stick

Our verdict: The one that will convert you.

Shade options: 9

I’ve long been a believer in Westman Atelier’s foundation sticks. Now, the blush sticks have found their way into my makeup bag as well. This luxury, clean beauty mainstay will make you turn on any other blush. It contains skin-loving ingredients like kaolin clay, which prevents clogged pores and absorbs excess oil, and antioxidant-rich vitamins C and E. Just one swipe is enough for a healthy wash of color.

Ami Cole Blush & Lip Multi Stick

Our verdict: Your skin, just glowier.

Shade options: 4

This lightweight cream blush is the closest I’ve gotten to a natural, skin-like glow. The blend is seamless, and it’s easy to apply with your fingers alone. (No endless patting of your makeup sponge.) If you know Ami Cole from their featherlight foundation, trust that their blush and lip multi-stick is just as satisfying to put on. The texture melts into your skin for a no-makeup-makeup look. #CleanLook lovers, this one’s for you.

Violette FR Bisou Blush Stick

Our verdict: The French-girl favorite.

Shade options: 4

I can never resist a French-girl beauty secret. (Is anyone immune to their timeless, but trend-setting prowess?) I even stock up on my favorite French pharmacy products during every Charles de Gaulle layover. And one thing French girls know, it’s a rouge—whether it’s their lips or their cheeks, they always get it right. Violette FR’s matte cream blush gives you a classic look you can dab on your cheeks and lips. The marbled swirl makes for a multidimensional finish, while the attached blush ensures a smooth blend.

Ogee Contour Blush Stick

Our verdict: Next-gen contour.

Shade options: 10

Contour isn’t dead—it’s just been revamped. This contour blush stick is ideal for anyone who doesn’t want to give up on their sculpted look. A single swipe defines your features without weighing down your skin. With a buildable glow and iridescent finish, you get a glassy, gleaming color with each swipe. It also uses green coffee oil to stimulate collagen, sal tree resin to smooth over pores, and tapioca powder to absorb excess oils.

Merit Flush Balm Cheek Color

Our verdict: Your go-to, buildable blush for a sun-kissed look.

Shade options: 9

The satiny, nonstick finish on this multi-use balm is universally flattering—and we love that it’s tiny enough to slide into your pocket or purse. Blendable and buildable, it conditions skin with vitamin E oil for a natural—never cakey—finish. Most importantly, it lets your skin tone shine through for a realistic flush. Pro tip: Pair with Merit’s Dayglow highlighting balm for a dewy sheen without any sparkle.

Olio E Osso Lip and Cheek Stick

Our verdict: The lightweight blush stick you’ll take on every trip.

Shade options: 10

With more of a texture that’s more oil than cream, I always imagine this blush stick as a vacation carry-on. Swipe it on your skin post-beach/pre-dinner or in the morning before setting off on your adventures. It’s light, hydrating, and defines barely-there color. As one of the OG clean beauty blush sticks, it’s a staple for its hydrating properties and unique olive oil formula. Said differently: where I go, it goes. Always.

Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50

Our verdict: The sun-protectant, buildable boost of SPF.

Shade options: 6

You might know Colorescience from their viral color-changing sunscreen. But the brand’s magic with pigmented SPF doesn’t end there. This multi-stick gives you both a natural flush with its range of pigments and a shield of mineral sun protection. However, you don’t want to count on it alone to protect you from the sun. Dermatologists say that makeup products containing sunscreen aren’t as effective alone since we tend not to use enough of them. Still, this is a great blush stick for a buildable boost of SPF that you’ll be happy to reapply.

What does summer smell like to you? The salty sea air? Fresh, farmer’s market finds? Sunscreen? For me, it’s a blend of all these nostalgic, warm-weather scents. If you close your eyes, you can probably transport yourself back to summers past with just a whiff.

That’s because the part of your brain that processes memory is adjacent to the part that processes smell. If you take this a step further, you can hack this cognitive process by intentionally creating scent cues for yourself. Wearing a specific perfume to work, for example, will signal to your brain that it’s time to buckle down. (There’s a productivity hack the hustle-culture bros won’t tell you.)

How to Find Your Signature Summer Scent

As a self-professed reset obsessive, I do everything in my power to make every season (or era, if you will) feel brand new. This means switching up my daily routines, like my wardrobe, skincare, and my scent. When I feel a new season or vibe calling, I find a scent that matches it. And nothing pleases me more than switching over to my summer scents. I gravitate toward vanilla, and because I’m a summer baby, all the best summer fragrances make my rotation.

But with new boutique scent brands emerging daily—fighting with the classics for a place in my summer scent tapestry—I get overwhelmed by choice. To sift through the finely scented mist, I tapped Ines Guien, VP of Operations at Dossier, to help us pick the best summer fragrances.

Guien’s ultimate guidance? “Don’t be afraid to experiment!” Fragrance should be fun—just like summer!

Ines Guien

Ines Guien is the Vice President Of Global Operations at Dossier Perfumes. Prior to that, Guien was the Business Development Coordinator at Le Labo Fragrances.

What are the best scents for summer?

“I think everyone wants to be a more playful, lighter version of themselves in the summer months,” says Guien. The best summer fragrances embody this more carefree version—the one whose mind is on maximizing beach time, not managing mental lists.

From fun, flirty florals to sweet summer scents, there’s a signature fragrance for everyone. Even if you gravitate toward earthier, heavier scent profiles that thrive in the winter, Guien affirms: there’s a fragrance for you. “If you prefer deeper ‘winter’ scents, there’s nothing that says you can’t wear them year round!”

Making Sense of Scent Notes

It all begins with understanding scent notes. “The top notes are the initial scents you smell when you first apply. The middle notes or the heart notes, appear once the top notes have evaporated and last for several hours. Finally, the base notes are those final scents you smell and are the most long-lasting. Base notes provide depth and richness and help anchor the top and middle notes.”

For summer scents, look for lighter top notes balanced with earthier or richer base notes. “Once you understand these notes, you can choose fragrances that complement each other.” This will also help you as you experiment with layering scents.

Odette Annable

Some tried and true notes are consistent throughout many of the best summer fragrances, says Guien. “Most people tend to prefer lighter, fruitier, and sunny scents for summer to match the season,” she says. “They also gravitate toward fragrances with prominent notes of vanilla during the warmer months. We’ve also seen a resurgence in popularity of fruity and gourmand scents.”

Specific summer 2024 fragrance trends influence the summer scents du jour. “Over the past two years or so, we’ve seen genderless fragrances explode in popularity. Consumers no longer want to be bound by gendered scents when it comes to their perfumes.”

Tips for Finding Your Summer Fragrance

Summer scents should be personal. They should reflect your own intentions for the season. And you should be excited to spritz your skin in the morning. To figure out what scents fit you best, check for common ingredients in your favorite fragrances. My ideal situation is smelling like a bonfire and s’mores. That explains why all my summer scents contain vanilla, brown sugar, caramel, and something woody.

Experiment With Layering

Another way to create a new—or new-ish—summer scent is through layering. “Layering fragrances is a great way to create a signature scent that is unique to you,” says Guien. “The easiest way to layer scents is to mix complementary notes. For example, combine floral with fruity scents or a woody scent with a spicy one to create a complex and interesting scent.”

Pro-tip: like with skincare, go from lightest to heaviest. “Apply your fragrances lightest to strongest to ensure the fragrances blend well and last all day.”

Read the Label

“No matter your budget or scent preferences, always look for fragrances that are made with quality ingredients and follow the strictest guidelines,” says Guien. “At Dossier, we make all of our perfumes in Grasse, France with only the highest-quality ingredients. We also follow strict U.S. and U.E. guidelines to ensure our products are ethical, sustainable, and most importantly non-toxic.”

The Best Bronzing Drops for a Luminous, Lit-From-Within Glow https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-bronzing-drops/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-bronzing-drops/#respond Fri, 24 May 2024 10:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=268753 Sun-kissed skin awaits.

The post The Best Bronzing Drops for a Luminous, Lit-From-Within Glow appeared first on Camille Styles.

Sure, you can ignore all the sun-safety advice and get your glow sans SPF. But for a sun-kissed tan minus any skin damage, the best bronzing drops are our go-to. Compared to the alternatives (powders, creams, and self-tanners), bronzing drops offer a lightweight, luminous finish—resulting in a dewy, lit-from-within complexion.

With their ever-increasing popularity (largely in part to the Drunk Elephant Bronzing Drops breaking the internet), plenty of brands have saturated the bronzing drops space. And no—they aren’t all formulated alike. While some have perfected the barely-there, compliment-inducing glow, others leave you looking like a disco ball that got left in the tanning bed. Not ideal. To determine the best bronzing drops worth adding to your cart, we tested the buzziest brands on the market today.

Featured image from our interview with Sabeena Ladha by Suruchi Avasthi.

Cyndi Ramirez best bronzing drops.

What do bronzing drops do?

You can think of bronzing drops as a short-therm solve for an instant glow. Whereas tanning drops play the long game with their infusion of DHA (the active ingredient used in sunless tanning agents), bronzing drops are a low-commitment way to add a little color and possible shine to your look. While many options are formulated with skin-loving faves like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and squalane, the best bronzing drops are makeup’s answer to a fading summer glow.

How to Use Bronzing Drops

The beautiful thing about bronzing drops is their versatility. They can be worn on their own, layered underneath makeup, mixed into foundation or moisturizer, or applied as the final step in your routine. Just be aware that blended with certain products, such as powder foundation, can yield a cakey finish. Try matching the drops’ lightweight texture with other luminous, liquid products.

When it comes to bronzing drops, the goal is a natural, believable tan. Because of that, less is always more. I like applying a drop to the high points of the face—forehead, nose, and cheek bones—or all over in place of a highlighter.

 6. Best Pigmented: Pai Skincare The Impossible Glow Bronzing Drops – $39 at Dermstore

Best Overall: Kosas Glow I.V. Vitamin-Infused Skin Illuminating Enhancer

Why We Love It: The first green flag of our top pick: the inclusive shade range. Spanning from a shimmery Silver Champagne to a Rich Deep Bronze, Kosas knows what the girlies want—options. The brand also addresses the ultimate challenge when it comes to formulating the best bronzing drops: creating attention-grabbing shine without looking like a disco ball. We believe that the best makeup is developed through a skin-supporting lens, and that’s exactly the approach Kosas took with this multi-use product. Infused with vitamins and nutrients, it’ll keep you glowing long after you apply.

 • Number of Shades: 10
 • Key Ingredients: Glutathione, Squalane
 • Five-Star Review: “I really like the texture of this product and the glow that it gives. I usually use it sparingly mixed with foundation or Kosas BB cream. It adds a nice luminescence!”

Best Primer: KORA Organics Silky Sun Drops 100% Mineral Sunscreen Serum

Why We Love It: I’ve learned to be proceed with caution when it comes to celebrity beauty brands, but Miranda Kerr’s (vegan and cruelty-free skincare line) KORA Organics always leaves me impressed. While this sunscreen serum won’t build the same depth of color as other picks, it’s the perfect protective primer that floods your skin with serious hydration. This natural, nourishing boost creates a glowing, SPF 30-protected base upon which you can apply makeup, sans white cast.

 • Number of Shades: 1
 • Key Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Raspberry Seed Oil, Chia Seed Oil, Noni
 • Five-Star Review: “This smells like their noni glow products and I love how glowy it leaves my skin. On days when I’m not wearing makeup, this is perfect. I do have sensitive and dry skin. I’m 30 years old. I love how seamlessly it blends in with my other skincare products and it doesn’t pill under makeup.”

Best for Face and Body: Live Tinted Hueglow Jumbo Liquid Highlighter Drops

Why We Love It: The number of empties I’ve happily (re: desperately, frantically) replaced of this serum-infused highlighter has me shook. It bridges the makeup/skincare divide, instead acting as a hybrid product that locks in moisture with hyaluronic acid and strengthens skin with sunflower seed oil. While some friends have noted they don’t love the texture as it can lean a bit sticky, I’ve found that mixing a few drops into my moisturizer makes for a streak-free, glowy application.

 • Number of Shades: 4
 • Key Ingredients: Squalane, Sunflower Seed Oil, Hyaluronic Acid
 • Five-Star Review: “I love this thing. It gives me this gorgeous “glow from within” look. It’s not glittery or sparkly I don’t really think it has a shine either; it just gives a radiances that’s beautiful. I love how it melts into my skin. The consistency is very nice as well.”

Best for Dull Skin: Saie Glowy Supergel

Why We Love It: Saie is a go-to for hard-working, minimalist makeup, and as with all the brand’s products, the Supergel yields a your-skin-just-glowier result. The lightweight formulation is infused with brightening vitamin C and hydrating squalane for a subtle, but radiant shine. We wear it on its own for a glowy boost, layered with a tinted SPF, or mixed with foundation for a dewy finish.

 • Number of Shades: 2
 • Key Ingredients: Squalane, Glycerin, Papaya Seed Oil
 • Five-Star Review: “I love this product! It’s so nice and I feel so sparkly 🙂 Makes my skin seem like it’s glass. I haven’t gotten any reaction to it yet so YAYY!!”

Best Affordable: Versed Mood Lighting Luminizing Glow Drops

Why We Love It: Versed has been a budget-friendly favorite for years, and the introduction of these peptide-infused glow drops solidifies our loyalty. Despite their lightweight feel, these drops boost hydration and elasticity for visibly plumper, smoother skin. Antioxidant-rich blackberry extract strengthens the skin barrier while polyglutamic acid locks in moisture. You can wear them with makeup, but these drops are my favorite for a pool day when the vibe is au naturel.

 • Number of Shades: 3
 • Key Ingredients: Polyglutamic Acid, Blackberry Extract, Vitamin E
 • Five-Star Review: “I love the sheer golden glow this product gives me. It’s just enough color on days when I don’t want full face makeup. I mix a few drops into my moisturizer instead of foundation. Then add a little concealer, mascara and lip gloss to get out the door in 15 minutes or less! I also love that it’s reasonably priced.”

Best Pigmented: Pai Skincare The Impossible Glow Bronzing Drops

Why We Love It: The impossible, made possible. These bronzing drops deliver a buildable, customizable color infused with naturally-derived pigment. Its radiance is unbeatable, nourishing the skin from the inside out with moisturizing mainstays like hyaluronic acid and sea kelp. The resulting finish is a pearlescent, golden-hour glow.

 • Number of Shades: 1
 • Key Ingredients: Citrus Limon Fruit Water, Hyaluronic Acid, Algae Extract
 • Five-Star Review: “I use the shade Rose Gold for my fair skin and it is the prettiest product in my entire collection! It’s subtle enough to use on the entire face when mixed in with a product, plays well with pretty much every base product I’ve mixed it with, and looks gorgeous alone on the skin as well. (Also, it somehow manages to look beautiful on skin with acne/texture/fine lines).”

Other Bronzing Drops to Consider

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter

The famed celebrity makeup artist puts out countless cult products—but this might be one of Tilbury’s best. It’s a true multi-hyphenate, working as an all-in-one highlighter and primer while also offering a light layer of coverage. While other bronzing products can draw attention to blemishes, the Flawless Filter blurs imperfections for a smooth finish.

Jones Road Gel Bronzer

The best bronzing drops combine color and hydration—check and check for this lightweight, barely-there bronzer. We love the gel-like texture and buildable color. The only drawback is the applicator; it can be difficult to get the product out.

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Hue Drops

Brightening and soothing, these drops leave skin even with a warm color. The product is great for dull skin as it offers a sheer tint packaged into a serum. Heavy-hitting ingredients like niacinamide, watermelon, and hyaluronic acid soothe, hydrate, and calm the skin.

Typology Glow Drops With 5% Vitamin C + Aloe Vera

These antioxidant-rich drops are pure elegance, offering a radiant, illuminating sheen. Fortified with brightening vitamin C and nourishing aloe vera, you can blend the product into a moisturizer or tinted serum, or layer a few drops on top of your makeup for a glowy finish.

The Ultimate Guide to Different Nail Shapes

Don’t underestimate the power of switching up your nail shape. Even the most minimalist mani can become a showstopper with the right shaping. Of course, nail shapes change with the trends. The incredibly intricate, claw-like long acrylics might not be a natural, but they’re enviably cool. And, with trends like quiet luxury and the clean girl aesthetic still sitting pretty in the zeitgeist, short nails have been all the rage. But just because a shape is trending, doesn’t mean it’s the best nail shape for you.

For more on finding your perfect nail shape, I spoke with celebrity manicurist Kimmie Kyees, (Rihanna’s nail artist!). Ahead, discover the best nail shapes to choose for summer and beyond.

Kimmie Kyees is a Los Angeles-based manicurist. Her client list includes Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Issa Rae, Mary J Blige, Chrissy Teigen, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, the Kardashians, and more.

How to Choose the Most Flattering Nail Shape

Kyees recommends using your cuticles to determine your ideal nail shape. For that, you need to properly push your cuticles and then reflect that shape in your nails. By doing this, no matter the shape you decide on, your nails will be naturally elongated.

Of course, personal preference is the ultimate deciding factor. However, because your hands are a key element of your day-to-day life, it’s important to take into consideration your profession and regular activities as well. Do you type on a computer all day? Are you moving equipment or materials? Perhaps you come into contact with small children. Reflecting on all of these factors will not only help you find a nail shape you love, but one that fits best with your lifestyle.

But—Kyees is quick to note that if you’re going for a textbook feminine look for your nails, almond should be your go-to. “It elongates the finger and is a very lady-like nail shape.” Bonus? It’s Adele’s favorite.

Good news for everyone adopting the short, naked nails look. “Square is always in style,” says Kyees. She encourages opting for a tapered, narrow sidewall with soft corners. “It’s a shape that will stand the test of time.” Case in point: Rihanna.

Kyees loves this look for summer, as it’s a great pairing with brighter shades. “I always love seeing soft round nails in popsicle and candy colors.”

Different Nail Shapes, Explained

To recap: the best nail shapes match your cuticles and/or make you feel the most confident. Like a haircut that frames your face or clothes tailored to your body, choosing the right nail shape can make you feel more like yourself.

If you’ve only tried one or two nail shapes, experimenting with new styles can get you out of a nail rut. And maybe even help you discover a whole new go-to manicure. Here are the most popular nail shapes for every style and every occasion.

Almond Nails

Fun, flirty, and femme, an almond nail is a glamorous take on the classic oval nail. Like its namesake, the nail wall tapers and then ends in a rounded peak.

Why we love it: The glamor of this look will never go out of style.

What to consider: Most natural nails would crumble under this shape, so you’ll probably get them reinforced with gel or acrylic.

Square Nails

Usually short and simple, these low-maintenance nails are high impact. You can jazz them up with bright colors or lean into your classy, clean girl aesthetic and pair them with a neutral shade for your skin tone.

Why we love it: They’re easy to take care of (and keep) but super stylish.

What to consider: You might be in danger of a chipped nail since the square edges aren’t the most durable.

Oval Nails

Similar to almond, but less tapered. Usually long and used to lengthen the appearance of your fingers.

Why we love it: These are some of the most versatile nails in the game. Flattering, functional, and femme. They’re also ideal for nail art.

What to consider: Oval nails require a little more maintenance and are harder on your natural nails than shorter styles.

Squoval Nails

Somewhere between a square and an oval. A true crowd favorite thanks to its durability and elegance. It keeps the flat edge of a square with the roundness of an oval nail.

Why we love it: More durable than a classic square and looks good on everyone.

What to consider: Because they’re so flattering, everyone has them. So if you’re looking for something daring to help you stand out, keep looking.

Round Nails

Like the oval, but most often used by people who prefer short nails. They soften at the edges and follow your natural nail shape.

Why we love it: Great for short nails. These are eye-catching while pairing perfectly with just about any color.

What to consider: There’s not much holding you back from this nail shape. It’s great for beginners who are just dipping their toes into the endless world of nail art options. Approachable and easy to love.

Ballerina Nails

Like an almond nail with a square tip, these come in different lengths but are most popular in a longer length.

Why we love it: Great for nail art and surprisingly durable. I recently loved it paired with the milky, glazed nail trend.

What to consider: They were everywhere for a while, so they might seem a bit passé. But don’t let that stop you!

Stiletto Nails

Like their heel namesake, stiletto nails are long, thin, and sexy. They taper to a point at the top.

Why we love it: They bring the drama and are ideal if your goal is to go bold with your look.

What to consider: Stiletto nails offer barely any structural integrity. They can also make it hard to type or use your hands in athletics or when working out.

Arrowhead Nails

Arrowhead nails can come in a range of lengths, but they all boast a signature flat tip. You’ll often see them in a longer length similar to stiletto nails, minus the pointy tip.

Why we love it: One word: striking.

What to consider: Best for long or medium-length natural nails.

Lipstick Nails

This style is defined by a sharp diagonal point at the top of the nail. They look like a tube of lipstick which, as a beauty editor, I can’t resist.

Why we love it: A perfect blend of elegant and exciting. The asymmetrical top adds interest—perfect for a bold color or design.

What to consider: Choose a geometric pattern to emphasize the funky shape.

Almondetto

Another mashup, these are similar to the almond mixed with the thinness of a stiletto. They are often used with a new take on the French mani.

Why we love it: Classy and cute—with a little excitement mixed in.

What to consider: You can get them as gel tips, which is currently the most popular order.

Trends cater to the cyclical nature of life, and they often shift right along with our own interests. Case in point, nail trends. The past few years have seen us growing out our nails or opting for long press-ons. And when headlines suggested that naked nails were coming for our manicure obsession, the initial reaction was that of shock. But maximalist nails are a vibe, right? They are, but our nails deserve a break every so often. Good news: prioritizing your nail health can also be aesthetic—and right now, it’s on trend.

While quiet luxury has been eclipsed by other microtrends capturing the zeitgeist, the style’s timelessness suggests that it’ll never fade entirely. Its effortless glamour and theme of beautiful undone-ness play the long game, leaning into a simple but captivating elegance. Exactly what naked nails achieve.

To perfect this goes-with-everything look, I spoke with Lesley Stanger, a nail artist, beauty creator, and Nailboo ambassador. Ahead, discover the best products for naked nails, a must-follow routine to keep your nails healthy, and everything to know about making minimalist nails work for you.

Featured image from our interview with Babba Rivera by Belathée Photography.

Pritika Swarup

What are naked nails?

An important distinction: naked nails are minimal, but they don’t imply neglect. Because you’re going bold by pulling back, upkeep and care are all the more important. Naked nails run the gamut of style. Some are left completely unpolished with just a simple clip, buff, and shape to keep things clean. Others take on color, but bold hues are out of the question—think delicate nudes like rose pink, white, or a clear top coat. Naked nails are considered but never overdone. Again, healthy nails is the key.

To get the look at home, start with the essentials. A nail file, a nail strengthener, and a buffing tool. And while many of us only think about our nails once a month at the salon, it’s important to establish a consistent routine around caring for your nails.

The Best Nail Care Routine for Long-Term Nail Health

If you’re worried about tacking on another to-do to your AM/PM beauty rituals, don’t worry. Stanger assures me that it’s easy to develop an impactful nail care routine. “Make sure that you are keeping your nails hydrated,” says the artist. When nails are dry, they’re more prone to breaking. To improve nail strength and prioritize hydration, Stanger suggests the following care tips:

 1. Apply a hand lotion or cuticle oil at least once daily. Doing so boosts the circulation around your nails which can stimulate nail growth. If you’re polishing your nails, cuticle oil also helps maintain shine by keeping the polish protected.
 2. Apply a thin base coat layer. This adds strength and offers the dual benefit of preventing damage and staining. It’ll also increase your color’s wear time.
 3. Be gentle with your nails. We’re constantly using our hands, but do what you can to minimize breakage.
White naked nails.

Tips for Minimizing Nail Damage

Painting your nails does inevitable damage. Even if you’re using a non-toxic product, nail polishes aren’t approved by either the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) before being released. That said, before painting your nails, it’s important to read the ingredients list. You can even verify ingredients via the Environmental Working Group database for a comprehensive look into potential concerns.

Once you feel confident in the polish and products you’re using, Stanger emphasizes the importance of properly prepping your nails and removing product. First step: Don’t do your nails too often. Instead, select a long-lasting polish. She notes that Nailboo products can last up to six weeks on the nails without chipping. “They protect the nails but are easily soaked off in acetone to ensure the health of your nails after removal.”

How to Get the Naked Nail Look at Home

To improve nails’ overall appearance, you have to be mindful of how you care for them. While brighter paints or splashier designs cover up not-so-healthy nails, keeping them “naked” can reveal snags and compromised nail integrity. Stanger suggests to keep the following in mind if you’re trying the naked nails trend.

 1. Clean nails on the top and underneath. Use a nail brush to remove dirt or debris.
 2. Buff and file nails. This keeps nails smooth and allows you to create your preferred and most flattering shape. There are two benefits to this: your nails look great and they’ll be less likely to snag or break.
 3. Apply a cuticle oil and base layer. As mentioned above, these additional steps keep nails hydrated while also adding strength and shine.
Nail polish products.

The Best Products to Perfect the Naked Nail Trend

Nailboo Blissful Blooms Cuticle & Nail Hydrating Oil

I’ve been using Nailboo products for over a month now and love how the brand has simplified and streamlined the process of doing your nails. This cuticle oil deeply hydrates nails with antioxidant-rich grapeseed oil. The lightweight, non-greasy formula dries quickly—so it’s no problem to apply daily. Note: It’s currently sold out, but I’ve found L’Occitane’s cuticle oil to be similarly softening and effective.

Vida Glow Natural Marine Collagen Sachets

When it comes to perfecting naked nails, keeping your nails healthy is everything. One of my favorite ways to ensure my nails stay strong is by supplementing with high-quality, clinically proven collagen—i.e., Vida Glow. Their natural marine collagen powder contains activated collagen peptides to stimulate collagen production, benefiting your nails, hair, and skin health. What’s more, Vida Glow’s collagen is heat stable. So while other collagen powders become less potent when exposed to heat, you can still stir a packet into your coffee and enjoy the (many) benefits.

Bare Hands The Dry Gloss Manicure Kit

The ultimate naked nails kit. For a one-and-done solution, this set has everything you need, pairing a polish and cuticle oil for your best-ever nails. Nourishing ingredients like jojoba seed oil, squalane, and vitamin E oil are gentle on your nails while still yielding a soft but strengthened result.

Gel Base + No Wipe Top Coats

Whether you’re doing naked nails or sticking with your loud and proud mani, base and top coats are non-negotiable. This bundle includes both, adding strength and shine. Like the brand’s cuticle oil, they’re fast-drying. Simply swipe and go on with your day.

L93 – Hand & Nail Serum

Typology is my be-all, end-all of French skincare. This serum works on both the hands and nails, providing these delicate areas with plant-based keratin and hyaluronic acid. The effect is deeply nourishing, softening your hands and cuticles. And the packaging? Stunning—so you won’t be shy about keeping your serum on the bathroom counter and using it on the daily.

Nécessaire The Hand Cream

IYKYK: the hunt for hand creams can be long and arduous. And then you find Nécessaire. Formulated with five ceramides, five peptides to boost your skin barrier, niacinamide to strengthen skin and soften signs of aging, and marula oil, this nourishing lotion reverses brittle cuticles and wraps your hands in hydrated bliss.

Nailboo Grooming Kit

For naked nails, a good grooming kit is your most essential essential. I love that the four-way file is strong and holds up to an intense filing sesh (I’ve been known to be aggressive). The cuticle pusher keeps them in place and looking fresh. And if you’re doing a DIY dip manicure, the powder brush makes for a smooth aplication.

I came of makeup age in the era of BareMinerals, a brand that popularized the idea of loose powder foundation for a large swath of mall-going millennials. Try as I might—I never quite took to the lighter-than-air formulas or how they dusted onto my skin. But after a makeup artist suggested I look into powder for my combination skin type, I set out to find the best powder foundation—one that masters the art of the barely-there look while still offering ample coverage.

Internet research regularly points to the same brands (you’ll see your Diors, Chanels, Urban Decays, and MACs), so I did what any red-blooded, mall-going millennial would do—went to my local Sephora to ask what their top-selling powder foundations are. The good people with headsets swiftly led me to the aisles for Laura Mercier (a classic) and Make Up For Ever (a MUA fave). “It’s what most professional makeup artists use on photoshoots,” I was told of the latter.

I’ve been using my color-matched compacts for the past few weeks, and while they’re both fantastic options, I have thoughts on both (and a clear winner). But before I touch on that…

Sanne Vloet best powder foundation

The Benefits of Powder Foundation

Unlike cream or liquid foundation, powder foundation doesn’t contain any water. Comprised mostly of finely milled pigments, emollients, and often talc, powder foundations are great for normal, combination, and oily skin types, especially ones that have oil-controlling ingredients. (Dry or mature complexions can blend powder foundation with a liquid primer to lock in a bit of hydration.)

If you’re looking for light coverage or a way to control shine, powder foundation is a fantastic option, especially during the hot summer months.

Of course, too much can lead to an overly matte finish (or the dreaded cakey look) and can leave skin feeling completely dried out. So the product you use (and how you apply it) makes a world of difference.

Below are my thoughts on Sephora’s most popular powder foundations (at least at the Dallas location) along with a few other hits that offer lighter-than-air coverage for every budget.

Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Foundation Powder

Best Overall: Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Foundation Powder

This is the stuff. It completely obliterated all my iffy feelings about powder foundations. Well, almost. As my Sephora friends mentioned, this lovely matte finish can be drying, even for combination skin. But a nice liquid primer or a few drops of your favorite face oil should help balance things out.

The coverage is beautifully buildable, and my skin (when properly moisturized before application) felt like silk. The super fine particles create a lovely blurring effect but still leave room for things like freckles to shine. This one did require a bit more work to ensure the powder was evenly dispersed compared to Make Up For Ever.

What’s to Love: The silky feel and no-makeup finish.

What’s Not to Love: The price. But the quality (even of the compact and included sponge) is worth it.

BeautyTok Favorite: Make Up For Ever HD Skin Matte Velvet Blurring Powder Foundation

I was a little less familiar with Make Up For Ever, but if it’s good enough for the fine folks on BeautyTok, it’s certainly good enough for me. While I didn’t love it quite as much as Laura Mercier’s powder foundation, I was impressed with how smoothly the powder went on, especially considering how fine the particles are. (Also, kudos to the physical compact, which survived my butter fingers dropping it on the cold hard floor.)

Make Up For Ever’s powder felt more hydrating than Laura Mercier, though both foundations will eventually leave skin feeling dry if you don’t apply a liquid primer.

What’s to Love: It’s almost impossible to mess up a Make Up For Ever application, which swipes on ridiculously smooth.

What’s Not to Love: While it had a lighter touch than Laura Mercier, it also wasn’t quite as blurring. (I like my coverage to, well, cover.) It also didn’t leave my skin feeling as silky.

Best for Buildable Coverage: Wander Beauty Wanderlust Powder Foundation

This foundation has me shook. As a forever fan of the dewy look, I hesitated to try something that would leave me with a more matte, poreless complexion. But after a few breakouts and even bug bites on my décolletage, I decided to dive in.

This product wears like a second skin. The foundation covers up breakouts and red spots while also evening out my complexion. And with areas that see a little more shine like my T-zone, I’m happy to have a go-to for absorbing oil. Final note: Being someone whose skin sees a lot during my daytime hours (between workouts, screen-heavy meetings, and the like), I’m glad to have something I can rely on and reapply throughout the day for customizable coverage when I need it. — Isabelle, Managing Editor

What’s to Love: This foundation comes in 12 shades, offering a premium color match that’s more accurate than its competitors. I also love the Rubicell applicator, which makes for easy subsequent applications and even makes it simple to pair the foundation with my tinted liquid moisturizer.

What’s Not to Love: While I love the lightweight formulation, I wore this during one particularly sticky beginning-of-June wedding. After an hour out in the relentless humidity, suffice it to say, this did not hold up. (But honestly, what could?)

Wander Beauty Wanderlust Powder Foundation

IYKYK—Wander Beauty is the “it” beauty brand for hard-working, multitasking clean products. This foundation offers a natural, soft matte finish that offers effortless coverage while still achieving that lit-from-within glow.

Best Drugstore: L’Oreal Paris Infallible Fresh Wear Foundation in a Powder

This budget-friendly favorite is TikTok famous (it’s been viral for years) for good reason: long-lasting, breathable coverage.

Best for Dry Skin: Shiseido Synchro Skin Self-Refreshing Custom Finish Powder Foundation

This SPF-packed foundation claims to “self-refresh” for longlasting coverage. Given the thousands of glowing reviews, I believe it.

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Powder Foundation

Available in a staggering 50 shades (an inclusive Fenty signature), this vegan, medium coverage foundation is just as good as the many viral TikToks would have you believe. In Rihanna we trust.

Chanel Ultra Le Teint Ultrawear All-Day Comfort Flawless Finish Compact Foundation

Chanel’s velvety powder melts into the skin and leaves a finish that’s (miraculously) both matte and glowy.

Best for Radiant Finish: Backstage Face & Body Powder-No-Powder

If you’re looking for luminous, Dior’s mineral-packed foundation and its buildable coverage will leave you looking radiant all day long.

M·A·C Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation

Simply put, nobody does the matte look like MAC. For a long-lasting, ultra-matte finish, this is the only choice.

e.l.f. Camo Powder Foundation

After being so impressed by the drugstore brand’s concealer, e.l.f.’s powder foundation doesn’t disappoint (and gives just as much coverage). It also comes in an impressive amount of shades.

Best for Mature Skin: jane iredale PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation

If you think powder makeup isn’t for mature skin, think again. This gorgeous, SPF-packed mineral formula brushes on flawlessly and doesn’t settle into wrinkles or fine lines.

Yes, Smudge-Free Lip Stains Do Exist—These 18 Passed the Coffee Cup Test https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-lip-stains/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-lip-stains/#respond Wed, 17 Jan 2024 11:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=221834 Kiss smudged lips goodbye.

The post Yes, Smudge-Free Lip Stains Do Exist—These 18 Passed the Coffee Cup Test appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
To be or not to be… practical? That is the (ultimate beauty) question. The plight of all makeup wearers has always been the choice between practicality and aesthetics—especially when it comes to lipstick. We’ve adapted, of course. Carrying mini mirrors in our purses, constantly reapplying and blotting, and counting on our friends (the good ones) to tell us if we have any smudges on our teeth. But does it have to be this way? What if we could go out without digging for the right shade of lipstick to replace the coat now smudged on our coffee cup? Enter: the best lip stains that get the job done.

Lip stains are not new, but they’re increasingly becoming the lip product of choice. We’re entering a new age where the best makeup is made to suit our lifestyles, not get in the way of them. From multi-tasking products to trends that celebrate what we actually look like, it was only a matter of time before we swapped out smudgy lipsticks for long-lasting color choices fit for all skin tones.

Lip trends are no longer just about the color du jour. The best products prioritize hydrating ingredients and powerful pigments. The matte trend gave us long-wearing products, but the trade-off was dry lips. The enduring glazed lip trend offers hydration, but not the transfer-free pouts that work for our everyday lives. So if you’re seeking products that nourish your lips and last through the day, read on to discover the best lip stains on the market.

The Difference Between Lipsticks and Lip Stains

There used to be just lip balms and lipsticks. Now we’re spoiled by choice. Lipsticks are your classic creamy makeup staple. But now there are also liquid lipsticks, which give you the same coverage without the waxy coating.

So, what sets the lip stains, oils, and tints taking over the beauty sphere apart? Let’s investigate.

 • Lip Tints: A sheer color option for a more effortless look.
 • Lip Gloss: A sticky gloss coating that gives your lips a shiny surface.
 • Lip Oils: An oil-based product with a liquid, glazed finish.
 • Lip Stains: A long-lasting liquid that absorbs into the skin.

What makes a lip stain long-lasting?

Unlike other lip products, lip stains don’t just sit on top of your lips. They absorb into your skin to create a long-lasting pigment that doesn’t budge. Since the pigment is not on the surface of your skin, it’s transfer-proof.

Makeup products.

Ingredients to Look For in a Lip Stain

The best lip stains are as nourishing as they are pigmented. Look for ingredients that give your skin moisture and lasting hydration, such as:

 • Jojoba oil
 • Shea butter
 • Coconut oil
 • Squalane
 • Hyaluronic acid
 • Beeswax
 • Honey
 • Aloe vera
 • Petroleum jelly
 • Avocado
 • Vitamin E

How to Apply a Lip Stain

The right lip stain goes—and stays—on smooth. But preparing your pout doesn’t hurt. Some lip stains go on with just one swipe or a couple for more buildable coverage. Others, you have to swipe or peel away.

Whatever type of lip product you choose, proper lip care can boost your lip health:

 • Use a lip scrub weekly. To avoid your lip product flaking or sticking to dry patches on your skin, add an exfoliating lip scrub to your routine to give yourself a clean slate.
 • Try a nightly lip mask. The best way to hydrate your lips is to drench them with a nightly lip mask. You’ll wake up to hydrated lips, which create a healthy canvas for your daily products.
 • Choose your lip balm wisely. Did you know that some lip balms slowly suck the moisture out of your lips? Choose one with hydrating ingredients like natural oils to nourish your lips instead of just applying a synthetic glossy coating.
 • Remove with an oil-based cleanser. How you take off your lip stain is just as important as how you put it on. By gently wiping (don’t rub or scrub!) with an oil-based cleanser, you can easily remove pigment without drying out your lips.

I couldn’t pay attention to anything my friend across the brunch table was saying. I was too distracted by the long, enviable, Bambi-like eyelashes fluttering before me. “I hope this is OK to ask, but your eyelashes… are they… ” Before I could finish, she whispered it like a secret, “Latisse.” Since its FDA approval in 2008, the Allergan product has been the gold standard for women wondering: how to grow eyelashes. (Seriously, those Brook Shields commercials are cemented in my mind.)

“Latisse’s active ingredient is bimatoprost, a prostaglandin analog, which has been shown in clinical studies to make eyelashes grow longer, thicker, and darker,” shares board-certified dermatologist Dr. Hadley King. “It works by lengthening the time the follicle stays in the growth phase.”

But even 15 years later, Latisse is still only available with a prescription. So for anyone looking for alternatives—and answers on how to make eyelashes grow—we tapped Dr. King. In return, she answered with all the tips, secrets, products, serums, treatments, and natural remedies to boost eyelash growth.

Dr. Hadley King

Hadley King, MD is a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in medical and cosmetic dermatology. She is also a Clinical Instructor of Dermatology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

The Best Lash Growth Serums

Hands down, the best option is Latisse. But if you’re looking to try something over-the-counter, eyelash serums from brands like GrandeLASH and Dr. Lara Devgan regularly earn rave reviews.

Grande Cosmetics GrandeLASH MD Lash Enhancing Serum

u003cpu003eThis cult-loved blend of vitamins, amino acids, and antioxidants, fortifies lashes from breakage while promoting longer, thicker lashes after 12 weeks of regular use (according to the brand). The clinically tested product is also u003ca href=u0022https://grandecosmetics.com/pages/is-grandelash-safeu0022 target=u0022_blanku0022 rel=u0022noreferrer noopeneru0022u003esafeu003c/au003e for contact lens wearers. u003c/pu003e

Another Over-the-Counter Lash Growth Option

Though Dr. King generally warns against over-the-counter cosmetics advertised as increasing the length and fullness of eyebrows and lashes (their efficacy has not been critically evaluated), if you are using a product, be sure to apply them to a completely cleansed lash line with an equally clean brush.

“Latisse provides disposable single-use applicator brushes because this is the safest way to ensure minimum risk of bacterial or fungal contamination and infection,” Dr. King notes.

The dermatologist does point out another promising option when it comes to what makes eyelashes grow. However, the potential side effects may outweigh the gains.

Based on a 2012 Journal of Dermatology study, “Rogaine appears to modestly increase eyebrow growth and is comparable to Latisse,” says Dr. King, who notes that a subsequent study concluded that Rogaine can be a safe and effective treatment for brows.

“However, Rogaine often causes irritation when applied to the scalp, and the eyelid skin area is generally more sensitive, so this is also possible when used for the eyelashes,” she adds. “Side effects from applying Rogaine to the eyebrow area include burning, dryness, itchiness, redness, and scaling.”

Go the All-Natural Route

Looking to avoid chemicals and the Sephora fuss altogether? A potential eyelash growth aid can likely be found somewhere in your home. Vitamin-dense products like aloe vera gels, olive oil, and green tea can reportedly support strong, long eyelash growth while moisturizing agents like shea butter and coconut oil nourish strands and prevent breakage.

But the most prominent home remedy for stimulating eyelash growth is castor oil. And while no studies have been able to prove castor oil causes hair growth, it certainly can’t hurt.

“Castor oil is not damaging to the hair and can provide some conditioning that improves the flexibility of the hair fiber. Castor oil has also been shown in a study to increase hair luster,” shares Dr. King.

Consider a Lash Lift or Perm

The trendy treatment has all the permanence of eyelash extensions without damaging adhesives. Plus, it cuts down on the use of potentially damaging curling devices. (Even Camille is a lash lift regular.)

Protect Your Eyelashes

It doesn’t matter how much attention and care (or money) you put into your lashes if you aren’t taking preventative measures to keep them healthy. Because really, when it comes to what makes eyelashes grow, what don’t do can be just as crucial as the healthy steps you take to promote eyelash growth.

 • Remove mascara before bed so lashes don’t break off onto your pillow.
 • Speaking of pillows, consider a silk pillowcase for less lash-compromising friction.
 • Limit the use of false eyelashes or eyelash extensions since adhesives may weaken lashes and cause breakage.
 • Regularly brush out your eyelashes to distribute natural oils.
 • Eat a healthy diet with plenty of protein, iron, and biotin.
 • Try a solid hair growth supplement (that extends to brows and eyelashes). Nutrifol is nutritionist-approved.

I’ve always been skeptical of any tinted beauty buy. The sub-par staying power and orange-y hues steered me away from where they sat on the Sephora shelves. Instead, I plastered on layers of foundation and concealer in hopes I would get the same, lit-from-within glow tinted products promised. Now, years later with hundreds of beauty products tested under my editor belt, I’m a proponent of makeup that doubles as skincare. (The best sunscreens are only the first step into a world of beauty-centric suncare.) Not only that, but because I seek to curate a simple and succinct routine, I’ve found myself experimenting with the best tinted sunscreen. And readers, I love the results.

Tinted sunscreens have evolved. In 2023, expect multitasking products worthy of your hard-working summer skincare routine. The best tinted sunscreen for you offers lightweight summer coverage while prioritizing personalized sun protection. And as tinted sunscreens become more popular, brands are looking to differentiate themselves. Whether you prefer a subtle glow, concealer-like coverage, or serum-like skin tints—the best tinted sunscreen delivers.

The Best Tinted Sunscreen, According to Beauty Experts

But how do you know if your tinted sunscreen is providing enough sun protection? And are any of these 2-in-1 products too good to be true? For answers on what to look for as you shop tinted sunscreens, I spoke all things SPF with Scottsdale-based SkinSpirit Aesthetician and skin cancer survivor Kaylee Esplin. She encourages everyone to “shop smartly,” and warns that “tinted sunscreen and makeup products with SPF are not the same thing!”

I also tapped Rose-Marie Swift, makeup expert and founder of the beloved RMS Beauty for her tips on finding your best formula. “I have never found an SPF that I actually like, let alone love. Simple as that. From the unacceptable ingredients to the inability to layer with makeup and that ghoulish white cast, never have I loved an SPF… until now.” After creating the RMS SuperNatural Radiance Serum SPF 30, Swift wants everyone to be obsessed with their sunscreen. And a tinted product might be the way to go.

Together, the two experts provided full-spectrum coverage (pun intended) on how to find a tinted sunscreen that doubles down on sun protection and skin coverage—while, of course, keeping your look flawless.

What is tinted sunscreen?

Tinted sunscreen is an antidote to the dreaded white cast faux pas. While it offers the same protection as regular sunscreen, tinted formulations are pigmented to prevent any white residue. From sheer tints to makeup-like coverage, tinted sunscreens come in different degrees of pigments to fit your preference.

What to Look for in the Best Tinted Sunscreen

“Check the ingredient list to avoid potential irritants or allergens if you have sensitive skin,” says Esplin. “Also, consider the texture, non-comedogenicity (if you have acne-prone skin), and any additional benefits like moisturization or antioxidant properties based on your skin’s needs.”

As for its SPF properties, Esplin recommends looking for:

 • Physical blockers. Look for sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they provide effective mineral protection and are generally well-tolerated by most skin types.
 • Broad-spectrum protection. You want a sunscreen that provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays (this is typically indicated on the label).
 • SPF value. Choose a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher to ensure sufficient protection.

Swift looks for mineral (aka physical) sunscreen over chemical sunscreen. The tint helps prevent the white cast that sometimes comes with mineral formulas.

Usually, zinc oxide is the main ingredient in clean mineral sunscreens. “Zinc oxide rarely causes irritation on the skin, so it can be used on any skin type—even on those with sensitive skin,” says Rose-Marie. She recommends looking for non-nano zinc oxide. “Nano refers to nanometers. Nanoparticles are smaller than 100nm. It means the mineral zinc oxide is larger than 100nm and therefore won’t penetrate your skin.” As a result, the zinc oxide creates a physical shield against the sun without irritating or clogging pores.

According to Swifft, other specific ingredients to look for include:

 • Iron oxides and rose geranium extract provide blue light protection.
 • Mica reflects blue light.
Woman with glowy skin.

Tips for Applying Tinted Sunscreen

Swift recommends what she calls the two-finger method. “Squeeze one line of sunscreen onto your index finger from the base of the tip. Do the same on your middle finger and apply all over,” she advises. “This measurement will ensure enough product for adequate SPF coverage. Massage it into the face and neck as you would a moisturizer. And be sure to reapply every two hours.”

“Don’t forget to protect your lips!” Esplin adds. “My first diagnoses was in 2016, a Basal Cell Carcinoma located on the cupid’s bow portion of my upper lip—an area that most people forget to protect. It’s important to remember that even our lips are susceptible to sun damage and cancer! And the effectiveness of any sunscreen, tinted or not, also depends on proper application, using the recommended amount, and reapplying every two hours or more frequently if sweating or swimming.”

Should you wear regular sunscreen underneath tinted sunscreen?

According to Esplin, tinted sunscreen can be just as good as any other SPFs. “As long as your tinted sunscreen provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays and has an appropriate sun protection factor (SPF of at least 30), it can be as safe and effective as regular sunscreen.”

“A sunscreen with SPF 30 will protect you from around 97% of UVB rays, whereas an SPF of 50 means protection from about 98% of UVB rays,” says Swift. “Anything beyond SPF 50 makes very little difference in terms of risk of sun damage, and no sunscreens offer 100% protection from UVB rays. So we feel 30 SPF is sufficient.”

There’s so much to love about summer. Between the outdoor activities, al fresco dining, and beach vacations, it’s a perfect season. The only thing I could do without? Triple-digit temps. Though I do my best to brave even the hottest, sweatiest days, I always feel like summer limits my self-expression. I can’t stand to wear more than my most lightweight summer basics and I strip my beauty routine down to serums and sunscreen. But to take back my style personality, I’m going big with my summer nails.

Whether you keep your nails short or you prefer bold designs, there’s a summer nail trend for everyone. This season, the nail spectrum spans natural nudes to neons and everything in between. I’ve scoured social media to find the coolest nail trends by celebrity nail artists and crafty DIYers alike. Bookmark this page and save for summer nail inspo that you can take to the salon or try your hand at (!) yourself.

Barbiecore

No doubt, Barbiecore is the hottest trend of the summer. Pink is the shade, Barbie is the reason. To me, Barbiecore is a reminder to add some whimsy to your life and do something fun for your inner child. Nothing says that like all pink everything—including your summer nails.

Pink Soda

Another way to pull off the pink trend is to channel your favorite summer drinks. This glittery texture imitates the perfect fizz of a strawberry lemonade or a fun summer spritz.

Rosé All Day

Short, nude-esque nails are all the rage. (We have the quiet luxury trend to thank.) This pinkish, rosé-inspired hue is perfect for a summer vacay.

True Nude

For a truly classic look, you can’t go wrong with a glossy nude. And this summer, you’ll be seeing them everywhere.

Milky Pastel

Pastels are back, mostly in milky shades. I can already picture enjoying these candy-coated summer nails while savoring a soft serve on the beach.

Classic Red

Red hot for summer: this spicy classic. Go for a firey shade or a more tomato hue to channel the latest Italian summer trend—#TomatoGirl—for your vacation nails.

Strawberry Summer

A fun twist on a classic red nail is this easy-to-DIY strawberry look. We’re loving strawberries on everything this year—nails are no exception.

Fruit Salad

Adding fun pop art on your nails is like a low-stakes version of a cute sticker tattoo. This year, fruit salad decals are all the rage. Your mani will be the star of any potluck.

Cherry

All the best fruits are in season, and what better way to celebrate the harvest than with your summer nails? Adding a cherry detail to a French manicure (or really any other look) is a fun summer flair.

Gingham

Channel this classic summer vibe with a breezy gingham print. Inspired by picnic baskets and summer dresses, this whimsical look works in every color.

Flower Crown

Flower crowns may be passé, but flower crown nails are a fresh take on florals. Cap off a colorful French mani with a string of flower details.

Tenniscore

Tenniscore is everywhere this summer. On or off the courts, we’re channeling the preppy style this season. Give your green nails—which were trending this spring—an upgrade with this tenniscore twist.

Mermaidcore

If watching The Little Mermaid live-action at the start of summer inspired you as much as it did us, you won’t be surprised by the resurgence of mermaidcore. Anything that feels ethereal and underwater goes for this one—bonus points for glitter and iridescent sparkles.

Aquamarine

For the ultimate throwback mermaid reference, channel the beautiful beachy vibes with an aquamarine blue. You could say we’ve got a blue crush on this shade.

Sky Blue

Now that we’re out of the June gloom, the skies are finally crystal clear and your nails can follow suit. One of the most popular colors this summer is sky blue. Just head to your local salon for the proof.

Head in the Clouds

Even if the skies are clear, soft clouds on your nails are an easy DIY that makes any color even more interesting.

Stardust

This one’s for anyone who checks CoStar daily and asks everyone they meet for their star sign. Clear summer skies mean a night sky full of stars. It’s the perfect reason to add star decals to your nails.

Pearls

The world is your oyster—a truth your summer nails know well. If you’re a fan of adding 3D ornaments to your nails, pearls are an elegant way to get in on this trend. Quiet luxury meets ornate nail art. It’s the best of both worlds.

Crystals

Another opulent way to adorn your nails is to add crystals. A dusting of clear crystals will elevate even the most simple summer looks.

Gemstones

Take the crystal trend one step further with colorful gemstones. To make it even more personal, research your birthstones and use those to inspire the look.

Glitter Glam

Take it back to basics and add a glitter coat to your nails. Get the glam look without the upkeep of 3D nail jewelry.

Disco Nails

Is your disco ball your favorite piece of home décor? Do you always take a video of every disco ball you encounter on a night out? Same—and this nail trend is for us. It’s perfect for summer concerts, from Eras (hello, mirrorball) to Renaissance (disco tips!).

Stained Glass

This colorful take on the disco trend will make your nails look like stained glass. It’s funky, cool, and guaranteed to catch everyone’s eyes.

Fairycore

Fairycore is the ethereal extension of cottagecore that we’re totally here for. Exploring nature all summer long? Do it with fairy-inspired nails. Think: mossy, earthy colors with colorful accents.

Rainbow Tips

One of the biggest rainbow trends we saw this June was a subtle rainbow tip. Good news: this look is going strong all summer.

Ombre Tips

New takes on the classic French are all the rage. And while ombre hair and ombre clothing are trends of the past, a subtle ombre gradient on your nails is cool and classy.

Neon Gradients

Want to take your ombre look to the next level? Try mixing neon gradients with unexpected colors for a bold beach nail look.

Neon Edges

Another way to try neon is a neon outline around a nude nail. Balance.

Neon Texture

Textured details are a cool way to embrace 3D nails without intense upkeep and protruding nail jewelry. Neon lines and textured curves are huge this summer for a playful look.

Chrome Flame

Embrace the chrome trend and the texture trend with these chrome flame nails. Add some edge to your look while manifesting many nights spent beside outdoor fire pits.

Snakes

The snake trend is a simple DIY with a super cool result. Whether you add snake decals or just stick to embracing snake print, it’s a cool way to give the illusion of texture and add a funky print to a plain color.

Butterflies

A classic for summer. Channel afternoons at the botanical gardens with butterfly details on your nails.

Cowboy

The cowboy and western aesthetic is here to stay. Bring back cow print everything. I’m fully here for it.

Is foundation dead? It seems that foundation as we used to know it—the non-negotiable, full-coverage end all, be all of makeup looks—might be. Gen Z favors beauty trends like no-makeup makeup or the #CleanLook, which feature skin tints and dabs of concealer in lieu of a full face of foundation. And as more people embrace skin neutrality (accepting your skin for all its blemishes, age spots, and fine lines), there’s less of a need to cover up all of our imperfections.

Thankfully, beauty brands are experimenting with new, better foundation options. Enter: stick foundation. Like a bronzer or any favored multi-stick, this tube application is smooth and satisfying. The best stick foundations in the beauty aisles are inspiring more shoppers to try these convenient, cake-free coverage options.

Intrigued? Thought so. Read on to discover what to look for in a stick foundation and where to find the best ones.

The Best Stick Foundations in 2023

There’s much to consider when choosing a foundation. First: how it looks. Think shade range, texture, coverage, and buildability. You might also consider ingredients. Is the product clean and nontoxic? Does it include hydrating ingredients or SPF?

To discover the best stick foundations, I polled some of our editors who are already believers themselves. And of course, I scoured through reviews and store aisles to try some myself.

Best Overall: Merit The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick

I use this foundation stick in “Buff.” It has buildable coverage, non-toxic ingredients, and it’s super lightweight. I love it—hands down, it’s my favorite. — Brandy, Motherhood Contributor

What We Love:

 • Buildable, long-lasting coverage
 • Non-toxic formulation
 • Lightweight coverage
 • Hydrating

What We Don’t:

 • Honestly? It’s hard to find fault with a multi-stick that comes in a range of shades, is formulated with skin-loving ingredients, and doesn’t irritate even acne-prone skin. It’s an easy yes!

Merit The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick

Best Sheer: Ogee Sculpted Complexion Stick

I’ll admit, I was influenced to buy this product from an Instagram ad that touted effortless, summer makeup. But here’s the kicker: it actually delivered. I’ve been packing this in my toiletries bag for travel and it’s so easy to swipe on and use a makeup brush to blend for sheer color that reduces pores and adds a little glow. My one caveat is that skin needs to be very well moisturized before applying to avoid a cakey or patchy texture. — Camille, Editor-in-Chief

 • Provides sheer glow and color

What We Don’t:

 • Can wear cakey if skin isn’t properly moisturized

I love that it wears with a soft matte texture, giving me both the dewy, hydrated look I crave while also covering up any pores. At this price point, it’s a solid pick that truly does it all. The post Glowy, Not Greasy—10 Genius Products for Budge-Free Summer Makeup appeared first on Camille Styles.

As someone with combination skin, my makeup routine has one goal: to toe the line between glazed and greasy. Glowy, glass skin is one thing. Who doesn’t aspire to the vitality of vibrant summer skin? And with summer finally here, beauty trends lean toward a more minimal, skin-focused approach to makeup. Which sounds great in theory—that is, until my makeup melts by midday. In our search for answers, we’ve likely all come across the ultimate comparison: setting spray vs. powder. In the fight for that elusive “lit from within” glow, finding the superior option for your skin is essential.

I think of summer as the great equalizer. Keeping my makeup from slipping and sliding off my face is a year-round sport. But in the summer, we’re all faced with the same challenge—and we all want answers.

Setting Spray vs. Powder: What to Know

There are hoards of products dedicated to making your looks last, from primers and micellar waters to prep your skin to setting sprays and powders. But which options actually work? Turns out, in the battle of setting spray vs. powder, there’s no single right choice. It all comes down to your skin type and desired look.

I spoke to Jena Joyce, a skincare expert, herbalist, and the founder and CEO of The Plant Mother, about how to get your look to stay fresh using setting spray and powder. Jena shares her insights below.

What is the difference between setting powder and setting spray?

You can get a setting spray for either mattifying your makeup or making your makeup more dewy. Depending on what look you are going for, you can choose a spray that works best for you. A powder is only for mattifying and will help to reduce sheen and oil.

I would recommend that a person with dry or combination skin use a spray while those who experience oily skin should use the setting powder. However, both can also be used at the same time to amplify your makeup so it lasts longer.

What should you consider when purchasing a setting powder or setting spray?

When looking to buy a setting spray, you want to know first if you want to have dewy or matte skin. If you primarily use matte, full-coverage foundation, then a matte setting spray would be best. If you use a lightweight and dewy foundation, then choose a setting spray that will help to keep your makeup more on the glossy side. It’s important to try and match your makeup to your powder or spray as you don’t want any separation in your makeup.

When looking for a setting powder, you can get pressed or loose powder form. Both help your makeup stay put, but a powder that is more compressed can act like a foundation and will give you a full-coverage feel.

Although it’s not as common, some setting powders can contain talc which is an ingredient known to cause health issues. Inhalation of talc can cause breathing issues, chest pain, and wheezing. Try to avoid this ingredient and stick to more natural products.

What’s the best way to apply setting sprays and powders?

Setting powders and spray should be applied after your makeup. However, I would advise waiting to put your mascara on after you use a spray as this could cause smudging!

You should stick to common base ingredients when it comes to your makeup. If you don’t, your makeup will separate.

I like people to envision mixing oil with water. It simply doesn’t blend! This is the same with your makeup which is why it’s important to use a spray or powder that has the same base as your foundation and concealers. Keep oils with oils and water-based with water-based products.

How to Pick the Product That’s Right for You

You can use a setting spray, powder, or both to get your desired look. But with so many options on the market, how do you choose the right one? No beauty product is created equal, so I asked Dr. HariKiran Chekuri—a board-certified dermatologist, cosmetic surgeon, and the medical head of ClinicSpots—about choosing the right products for your skin. Keep reading for insights.

Tips for Selecting a Setting Powder

 • Shade. Select a translucent setting powder that is universal for all skin tones, or a tinted setting powder that matches your foundation or adds some warmth or depth to your complexion.
 • Finish. You can choose a matte setting powder that eliminates shine and gives you a velvety look, or a luminous setting powder that adds some subtle shimmer and gives you a soft-focus look.
 • Texture. Choose a loose setting powder that is finely milled and easy to blend, or a pressed setting powder that is compact and convenient to carry.

Tips for Selecting a Setting Spray

 • Formula. Opt for a water-based setting spray that is lightweight and hydrating, or an alcohol-based setting spray that is long-lasting and mattifying.
 • Finish. You can choose a dewy setting spray that enhances your glow and makes your skin look plump and healthy, or a matte setting spray that reduces shine and makes your skin look smooth and flawless.
 • Ingredients. You can choose a setting spray that contains beneficial ingredients for your skin type, such as antioxidants, vitamins, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, etc. You should also avoid setting sprays that contain harmful ingredients such as parabens, sulfates, phthalates, etc.

Key Ingredients to Look For

 • Antioxidants. These are substances that protect your skin from free radical damage caused by environmental factors such as UV rays, pollution, etc. Some examples of antioxidants are vitamin C, vitamin E, and green tea extract.
 • Hyaluronic acid. This is a molecule that attracts and retains moisture in your skin cells. It helps hydrate your skin, plump up fine lines and wrinkles, and improve your skin elasticity.
 • Glycerin. This is a humectant that draws water from the air into your skin. It helps moisturize your skin, smooth out rough patches, and prevent dryness.

Ingredients to Avoid

 • Parabens. Parabens are preservatives that prevent bacterial growth in cosmetic products. They are linked to hormonal disruption, allergic reactions, and breast cancer risk.
 • Sulfates. These are detergents that create foam in cleansing products. They’re known to strip away natural oils from your skin, irritate your skin barrier, and cause dryness.
 • Phthalates. These are plasticizers that make products more flexible and durable. They are associated with reproductive toxicity, endocrine disruption, and developmental defects.

Tips for Finishing Off Your Look

A general rule of thumb is to use products with similar formulas to ensure compatibility and avoid separation or oxidation of your makeup.

For example, if you use an oil-based foundation, consider using an oil-based setting powder or an alcohol-based setting spray to set it in place and prevent it from sliding off due to oil production. If you use a water-based foundation, you might want to use a water-based setting powder or a water-based setting spray to lock it in place and prevent it from drying out.

You can also experiment with different combinations of products to see what works best for you and what gives you the desired effect. For example, you can use an oil-based foundation with a water-based setting spray to add some dewiness and hydration to your matte base. Or, try a water-based foundation with an oil-based setting powder to add some warmth and glow to your natural base.

The key is to test out different products on yourself and see how they perform on your skin type and with your makeup style.

The Best Powders

Powders can get a bad reputation. Though they effectively cut shine, they can also quickly cake and crease. And even when they work, new beauty trends favor less coverage and skin that looks like skin. Can powders achieve that? Don’t count it out. But a good powder is the best way to control oil—whether you’re going for a completely matte look or just a more controlled glow.

Most Versatile Setting Powder: Glossier Wowder

Glossier is known for making skin-first products that give you an effortless glow. So it makes sense that their cult-favorite powder doesn’t compromise your pursuit of dewy, natural-looking skin. I tried the Glossier Wowder when I was deep in my Glossier phase and it’s one of the products I’ve kept in my rotation ever since. The kaolin clay base absorbs oil without leaving a cakey residue. It works well with my other hydrating products to create a look that is controlled but not flat. Get this breathable powder if you want your skin to look like skin while still toning down the midday grease.

There are so many things to love about summer: backyard barbecues, warm-weather activities, and longer days in the sun. But as a person with combination skin that leans on the oily side, I get the summer scaries at the thought of putting on makeup that will, by the end of the day, melt into a mess. Despite my lightweight summer lineup of skin tints and sheer coverage, my skin can’t seem to hold onto a look for dear life. And who wants to cake on the powder in the summer? That’s why the best primers for oily skin have become my go-to solution.

But of course, I always want to be working with the best of the best. And with new products releasing all the time, it’s important to do my research and try out what’s available. So, after lots of deep dives and scouring through skincare social media accounts, I gathered together some of the best primers for oily skin and put them to the test.

How We Determined the Best Primers for Oily Skin

There are a lot of primers on the market. For oily skin gals, not just any primer will do. Whether you’re a fan of matte or dewy looks, your oily skin can sabotage even your most low-maintenance looks. So finding the right primer for oily skin is key.

To discover which primers are actually worth the hype, I tested them based on:

 • Texture: What does it feel like?
 • Hold: How well does it hold makeup throughout the day/night?
 • Key Ingredients: What is in it? Does it contain other skincare ingredients I like?
 • Skin Type: Is it made for oily skin?
 • Size: How much bang you get for your buck

I have a decently healthy relationship with aging. I’m okay with a forehead wrinkle or two and even welcome the crinkled charm of crow’s feet. But I absolutely draw the line at dark undereye circles. I won’t leave the house without touching them up, an obsession that’s cost me a pretty penny in cover-up. So this year, to be a little kinder on my wallet, I vowed to discover the best drugstore undereye concealers available.

In addition to polling the Camille Styles team, I scoured the web for glowing reviews and ratings, ultimately landing on nine absolute bangers of undereye concealers—with four true standouts—priced mercifully under $15.

Go ahead, treat your eyes to something fairly priced.

How We Landed on the Best Undereye Concealers

I’m a makeup minimalist, but I take my concealer seriously. When I play it right, I can usually skip the foundation entirely. Because a good concealer should be able to literally cover it all—from redness and uneven skin tone to some light contouring—in addition to undereye bags.

My go-to concealer for a while has been the Brightening Concealer from Gee Beauty. After taking a master class from the founders (where I learned you should absolutely, despite popular belief, be putting concealer on your eyelids and inner eye corners), I was hooked on the luminous, vitamin-packed liquid. But at $38 a pop and with the rate I apply concealer, I was looking to pepper in a drugstore dupe to treat my dark circles.

Apart from my coworkers’ trusted recommendations, I purchased each product and gave them all a fair whirl on the ol’ eye area, aggressively judging their consistency, coverage, and creasing along the way.

The Best Drugstore Undereye Concealers in 2023

Best drugstore undereye concealers.

Most Hydrating: NYX Photogenic Concealer Wand

This was really light and lovely. I also deeply appreciate how thin and precise the wand is (many of the wands in our roundup are almost comically large).

What’s to Love: My skin felt hydrated, I never had to worry about creasing, and the product blended seamlessly into my skin.

What’s Not: The NYX concealer is great for layering, but if you like full coverage, you’ll probably blow through this bottle quickly.

Most Lightweight: e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer

“Y’all, I thought I had left behind my e.l.f. products in high school, but this concealer gets the job done. While I love the more expensive picks in my medicine cabinet (shoutout to Rare Beauty and Wander Beauty), this affordable option gives me the same lightweight finish plus added hydration. Whereas other products in the past have dried out within an hour—highlighting my lack of sleep rather than concealing it—this pick works perfectly with my tinted moisturizer for an all-day, dewy finish.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

Best On-the-Go: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind

“This one is always packed in my purse and makeup bag for an on-the-go application. Not only does it hide dark circles, it’s super hydrating and the sponge application makes it apply so much more naturally and evenly distributed. I never feel like I’m wearing a concealer when I use this.” — Kelly, Contributing Editor

Best for Layering: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer

If you dig a matte finish, this is the concealer for you. It went on beautifully and would be so easy to layer or reapply throughout the day. I love it so much, I even included a picture of myself below (my right eye has been Neutrogena-ed).

What’s to Love: The finish is superb and I love the lipstick-like shape that makes it easy to apply on-the-go. An instant purse staple.

What’s Not: Given its name and its hyaluronic acid core, the Neutrogena concealer wasn’t nearly as hydrating as I would expect.

Sorry for the jump scare! This is me with no makeup—apart from old mascara and the Neutrogena concealer on the left eye in this picture.

For Need Full-Coverage on Acne-Prone Skin: L’Oreal Paris Infallible Full Wear Concealer

A little goes a long way with this one. It’s full coverage to the max and isn’t going to go anywhere. L’Oreal’s concealer went on a little drier than I would have liked, but the product is designed for oily, acne-prone skin.

What’s to Love: The full-coverage concealer can cover everything you want in one easy swoop and would be a great option if you’re looking to skip the foundation.

What’s Not: I didn’t love the way it settled—it felt almost a little sticky. And given how the large wand swipes on at once, it can feel a bit like face paint.

For Full-Coverage That Also Hydrates: COVERGIRL TruBlend Undercover Concealer

I didn’t know it was possible, but I got a shade that was too light for my deeply pale skin. Now I know just how porcelain concealers can go. That being said, the consistency was beautiful, offering the same full coverage as the L’Oreal Infallible concealer with a bit more hydration.

What’s to Love: The coverage is killer and there was nary a crease in sight as the day went on.

What’s Not: The product is thick and the wand is huge, making it a little tougher to blend and be precise.

For Covering Acne: Makeup Revolution Conceal and Define

The thick, full-coverage product takes a bit of work to blend in, but it may be worth it for the dose of anti-inflammatory niacinamide you get with each drop.

What’s to Love: Covering up blemishes with concealer can feel like you’re doing more harm than good, but you can feel a little better thanks to Makeup Revolution’s niacinamide.

What’s Not: While it looks great, it can feel a little too matte (almost chalky) after sitting on the skin for a while.

For Easy, Lightweight Coverage: Milani Conceal + Perfect

This dependable concealer gets the job done with ease, though it might go best with a bit of moisturizer first.

What’s to Love: It’s mixed with vitamin E and is cruelty-free.

What’s Not: There’s a bit of a paint-like smell going on here… based on some Amazon reviews, I know I’m not alone in thinking this.

For a Clean, Luxurious Feel: Catrice True Skin Concealer

This has a beautiful silky feel to it without being greasy. Unlike the Neutrogena stick, which I truly loved, I can actually feel the hyaluronic acid in this one.

What’s to Love: This swiped on so luxuriously. It’s hard to believe it’s just $7.

What’s Not: That being said, it also swipes on thick, and can take a bit of work to blend in.

When it comes to my nails, I usually play it safe. Like any pre-teen with a penchant for Nirvana and thick black eyeliner, when I first started wearing nail polish, I only wore black. I rocked the patron manicure of angsty teens for years, baring my chipped and bitten nails with pride. Eventually, I grew out of it, but I had forgotten how fun expressing myself through nails could be. That is, of course, until I took the plunge and switched out my tried-and-true tones to experiment with the best spring nail colors 2023 has to offer.

I’ll admit, for a few years I didn’t paint my nails at all. Instead, I chose to focus on repairing my nail health after years of biting them down (ouch). But recently, nail art has come back into favor. After all, there’s nothing like the power of a good manicure—and this trend is a great reminder of exactly that. Bold nail looks abound and they’re inspiring me to try something new. There’s no time like the present to be adventurous with your nails.

An Expert Shares the Biggest Spring Nail Colors for 2023

Truly, what is spring for but reinvention? The turning of the seasons always fills me with inexplicable excitement. Suddenly, anything and everything feels possible. The sun starts shining again, the days get longer, and countless opportunities spread themselves out in front of me. The call to try something new can’t be denied, and I’m diving in deep. A low-stakes way to channel this fervor for change? A DIY mani-pedi, of course. This year, I’m finally trying all the nail inspo I’ve saved on Instagram and committing myself to switching things up.

To get the lowdown on all the best spring nail colors and trends, I consulted celebrity nail stylist Fleury Rose. She gave me the scoop on all the best trends to try for spring, how to choose the right one for you, and some of her favorite shades. Keep reading for major manicure inspiration.

Fleury Rose

Fleury Rose is a celebrity nail artist. Her work has been featured in Vogue, Teen Vogue, and Paper Magazine (among other publications) as well as on countless nail and beauty blogs. Rose works with a number of model, artist, and stylist clients who love her fresh, bold take on nail art.

According to Rose, people are itching for any opportunity to express themselves. The season’s bright, bold nail trends reflect that. She notes that, after years staying indoors and without opportunity to put self-expression on display, “people are really wanting to see and be seen after what feels like an eternity of isolation. This makes me think that people will really be serving looks as the weather heats up, nails included! Think fun bright colors like green, long lengths, and lots of expressive nail art. My clients have been loving the tiny 3D gummy bears I make on their nails—totally sweet for spring.”

How to Select the Best Nail Color for You

If you’ve ever experienced that fresh-from-the-salon feeling with a new shade on your nails, then it goes without saying: color can change how you feel. “When choosing a nail color, I generally consider how it makes me feel when I look at it, but also how I’d like to feel,” says Rose.

Pick something aspirational. Whether you need a little confidence or a warm-weather mood booster, a fresh-color mani has you covered. Rose’s take is that in some areas, “it’s still QUITE cold. A lot of clients have been doing bright, neon, and dopamine-inducing colors to boost their moods ’til the weather warms up. It’s a great time to express your individuality through your nail colors if you dare!”

What are your spring nail colors recommendations?

Go big or go home, says Rose. “I love a green nail for spring! There’s a specific neon, pastel green that seems to be turning up all over my Instagram feed. OPI’s ‘The Pass is Always Greener’ is super pretty even as a French nail! I’m also obsessed with Megan Fox and her matching green mani-pedi. So cute! Gucci’s ‘Melinda’ would be so perfect!”
