Petition to make front-facing phone cameras just a little worse. We’ve all done it: accidentally opening the camera app just to come face-to-face (literally) with every single one of our pores. If you find yourself asking: “Why are my pores so big?” you’re not the only one. Don’t worry, smoother skin is possible.

Pore size is determined by a mixture of genetics and lifestyle factors. This means there’s hope. Depending on your skin type, age, and just how big your pores are (not just how they look in a phone camera or magnifying makeup mirror), a combination of skincare and in-office treatments really can shrink your pores. Still, there are more than a few myths to be aware of.

I looked to the experts for answers. Dr. Jennifer D. Holman, MD, FAAD is a board-certified dermatologist based in East Texas and Mona Seresht, MSPAS, PA-C is a certified physician assistant at Facile. Ahead, the two separate fact from fiction, addressing pore myths and sharing skincare routines to achieve smoother skin.

Why are my pores so big?

At some point in our skincare journeys, we learn to accept the things we can’t change (like the fact that we have pores in the first place). You might wish you could shrink your pores until they disappear, but Seresht notes that understanding—and working with—your pores is key. From there, you can learn to manage various skin conditions, “developing effective skincare routines that promote healthy skin.”

She continues. “[Pores] play essential roles in regulating body temperature by allowing sweat to surface and cool the body. Additionally, pores release sebum, an oily substance that moisturizes and protects the skin.”

Finding out your skin type can provide clues as to how much of your pore size is genetic and how much is caused by external factors. “Just like your skin color is genetic, your skin type, including your pore size, is genetic as well,” says Dr. Holman. “Typically, people with oilier skin who produce more sebum have larger pores. Hormonal factors can also cause you to produce more sebum, and in addition to acne, you can see enlarged pores.”

Another unavoidable factor? Age. While much of our lives get richer and more full as we age, our skin only ages as well as we treat it. “Age gets all of us,” says Dr. Holman. “We lose collagen and elastin as we age and pores become more visible.”

What Causes Large Pores

You’re not just stuck with the pores you’re doled out at birth. How you spend your days also contributes to the appearance of your pores. Some, like your skincare routine, are changeable. Others, like sun exposure, are inevitable—but that doesn’t mean you’re doomed.

Common causes of large pores are sun damage and excessive sebum. “Pores can enlarge when they become congested with debris like dirt, oils, and dead skin cells,” says Seresht. “Excessive sebum production can further stretch and accentuate their appearance.”

Her suggestion? Make sure your skincare routine targets excess sebum. “Maintaining a consistent skincare regimen that includes gentle cleansing, exfoliation, and the use of noncomedogenic products is crucial for minimizing the appearance of enlarged pores and promoting clear, healthy skin.”

Like aging, sun damage impacts pores by breaking down collagen and elastin. “Sun damage causes elastin and collagen breakdown, which can lead to larger pores,” says Dr. Holman. If you need another sign to invest in a good sunscreen, this is it.

Why You May Notice Large Pores on Your Nose

Often, we see large pores on our noses because the sebaceous glands there are bigger. Many of us—guilty!—also find ourselves picking and squeezing at this area when we see blackheads appear. And if you’re trying to overcorrect with pore, you might just be making the problem worse.

The viral hack for large, clogged pores on your nose? French pharmacy favorite, La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5—or any other hydrating, barrier-protecting moisturizer. By hydrating your skin, you prevent excess sebum creation. Cicaplast hydrates and locks in moisture. Even if it’s too thick for you to use for slugging, slather it on your nose to shrink the appearance of your pores.

4 Myths About Large Pores

Myth #1: Pores can “open” and “close”

One of the most pervasive myths is that you need to open up your pores. “They do not have muscles or mechanisms for such movement,” says Seresht.

According to Dr. Holman, “Steaming or certain masks may temporarily enlarge pores. These things increase the penetration of certain products in the skin, but pores don’t actually open and close.”

Even these temporary solutions are not fixes, says Seresht. “Beliefs about steam opening pores or pore strips effectively removing debris are widespread but often oversimplified.” While these can temporarily enlarge pores to allow for decongesting your pores or more effective product use, they can also enlarge pores—so be careful.

Myth #2: Pores are filled with dirt

“A common myth about pores is that they are filled with dirt,” says Dr. Holman. “The black material you see inside pores (‘blackheads’ or open comedones) is sometimes oxidized skin proteins. Seeing pores or material inside pores is not because you are dirty or have poor hygiene.”

Myth #3: Sunshine will shrink your pores

“Another myth is that a good dose of sunshine will improve the appearance of your pores,” says Dr. Holman. “Sun damage actually breaks down collagen and elastin, leading to the appearance of larger pores.”

Myth #4: You can permanently change pore size

As much as certain buzzy beauty products want you to believe this, it’s a marketing misconception at best. “These myths highlight the importance of understanding pore function and adopting evidence-based skincare practices to maintain skin health effectively,” says Seresht.

Best In-Office Treatments for Minimizing Large Pores

While you can’t alter pore size permanently, in-office treatments can give you impressive results, fast. Seresht recommends consulting a dermatologist or esthetician to find the right treatment for your skin goals. “The best way to decide what fits your lifestyle, budget, and expectations is to consult with an experienced aesthetic provider.”

How do you know what to look for in a treatment or a practitioner? “Ask for before and after photos and what their experience is treating pore appearance,” she says. “And don’t go for substitutes—I tell patients not to waste their money on things that don’t work trying to save money. It’s better to save or finance the treatments that will actually give you results than throw money away.”

This all goes hand-in-hand with proper skin maintenance and at-home solutions. Your provider can give you tips for maintenance tailored to your skin. “Let the provider build you a plan for what to do in-office and what products to use at home to enhance your results.”

Lasers/Pulsed Light Devices

Lasers and other pulsed-light technology are among the most innovative technologies for non-invasive treatments. They’re often gentler on the skin, more effective than other treatments, and require minimal downtime.

For enlarged pores, Dr. Holman is a fan of the celeb-approved BBL HEROic and HALO laser. “The BBL improves the overall appearance of the skin with a focus on correction of reds and browns, and then the HALO steps in to reduce the appearance of pores,” she says. “It’s a novel technology that delivers both fractionated ablative and non-ablative wavelengths at the same time to synergistically improve pore appearance. There is minimal downtime with the real results my patients are looking for.”

Seresht is a fan of the CoolPeel CO2 laser. “The CoolPeel CO2 laser targets the skin to refine texture and minimize pore size,” she says. “These treatments are performed by skincare professionals and can be tailored to your skin type and specific concerns for optimal results.”

Microneedling and Chemical Peels

Microneedling gives your skin an instant boost while allowing serums (topical exosomes are the hot add-on right now) to penetrate deeper into the skin. “Microneedling stimulates collagen production, improving skin texture,” says Seresht.

While you may experience post-procedure redness for a few days, you’ll also be left with smoother skin and smaller-looking pores. Some people also add chemical peels for greater results. “Chemical peels help clear pores and enhance overall skin clarity.” Chemical peels can range from intense (requiring about a week of downtime) to “no-peel” peels like PRX treatments. These address complexion as well as texture and fine lines.

The Best Skincare Routine to Address Large Pores

Like everything, making a change starts with changing your habits. Your skincare routine is the most powerful tool in your arsenal to reduce the appearance of pores. Dr. Holman is a fan of keeping it simple: “The classic regimen is a morning antioxidant and sunscreen and an evening retinoid.”

Seresht recommends consistency. “To diminish pore visibility and enhance skin health, maintain a routine of regular cleansing, weekly exfoliation with chemical exfoliants, and use of retinoids.”

Balancing hydration and exfoliation is key, while also taking preventative measures to protect your collagen—because once it’s gone, it’s gone. “Consistent skincare, hydration, and sun protection help maintain skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of pores,” says Seresht. “Avoiding smoking, managing stress, and using the correct products for your skin type is essential for promoting healthy skin and achieving a smoother, clearer complexion.”

The Best Products to Address Enlarged Pores

Our experts recommend prioritizing the following ingredients in your routine to address enlarged pores and experience smoother skin.

  • Topical exosomes. Exosomes boost your skin’s healing process, triggering cells to repair damage and your skin to increase collagen and elasticity.
  • Retinol. Retinol can both unclog pores and shrink their size for smoothness.
  • Hyaluronic acid. Prevents excess sebum before it clogs pores.
  • Salicylic acid. The mighty pore-unclogger, salicylic acid is a BHA that sweeps debris.
  • Glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is an AHA that sloughs off dead skin and improves overall texture, shrinking pores and smoothing skin.
  • Mandelic acid. As an antibacterial acne fighter, this is the best ingredient for acne-prone skin and reducing sebum.
  • Citric acid. Citric acid evens skin tone and texture by exfoliating the upper layer of dead skin cells and shrinking pores.
  • Niacinamide. One of the best ingredients for complexion, niacinamide shrinks pores and improves skin elasticity while building up your skin barrier.
  • SPF 30 or above. Don’t forget to reapply!

New skincare brands pop up on the daily. As an editor, my inbox is regularly flooded with pitch after pitch of buzzy brands touting formulations with the latest and greatest ingredients. Apparently, I’m always just a purchase away from taut, bouncy, and glowing skin. But in the wide and ever-expanding world of beauty buys, some brands stand this test of relevancy and efficacy. My all-time fave? Versed skincare.

Like many, the cult brand came onto my radar when it hit the Target shelves in the spring of 2019. Getting snatched up by the retail giant (and the site of many a Sunday well-spent) is a rite of passage for countless small brands. But getting our hands on non-toxic eye creams and cleansers all for under $25? I—and millennial/Gen-Z women everywhere—was thrilled. Clearly, the brand is worth the hype. We’ve been buying up Versed ever since.

Versed Skincare Review: The Hydration Trio

Now, Versed is dropping its biggest launch to date. The Hydration Trio highlights a hardworking cleanser, serum, and eye gel—all priced at under $15. For insights into the intention behind this line and the effective ingredients each product features, I spoke with Kerry Sullivan, Versed’s CEO. Be sure to scroll to the end where I share my honest review. You won’t believe the before and after.

Kerry Sullivan Versed CEO
Kerry Sullivan

Kerry Sullivan is the CEO of Los Angeles-based skincare brand Versed. She previously served as CMO at Dollar Shave Club and had also spent some 17 years in several executive roles at Johnson & Johnson, including as VP of Marketing and General Manager of Neutrogena. Kerry received her MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business and her BA from Georgetown University.

Many dermatologists support a pared-down, minimalist skincare routine. How do these three products fit into someone’s current routine?

Versed is all about centering on—and perfecting—the basics. “The Versed MO is to simplify skincare so you can solve your biggest skin concerns,” says Sullivan. While we love an hour-long, skincare-as-self-care sesh, time doesn’t always allow. When that’s the case, it’s important to lean on results-centric products—like the Hydration Trio—to ensure dewy skin.

But why the focus on hydration specifically? Sullivan is quick to note that hydration is a constant—no matter how someone’s skin may change and evolve. “It’s not just a lightweight moisturizer; it’s a fundamental part of our skincare. We’re firing all cylinders on that hydration with this trifecta of products. Comforting cleanser? Check. Powerhouse serum? Check. Lightweight, refreshing eye gel? Check.”

As for a hydration-based routine, Sullivan emphasizes a more is more approach, recommending that all three products be used together. To complete your daily, AM skincare ritual, top it off with a moisturizer and SPF.

Other brands put moisture—not hydration—front and center in their product lines. What is the difference? Where do each of these focus areas fit into an optimal skincare routine?

Sullivan defines the difference, noting that “hydrating ingredients attract water to the skin whereas moisturizing ingredients seal in moisture that’s already present in the skin.” However, while not interchangeable, hydrating ingredients can have moisturizing properties, with the opposite also being true.

If you’re coming to these products with dehydrated skin, “using a product like Water Rush [Intensive Hydrating Serum] that focuses on hydration will help replenish the water loss that’s causing your skin to look dull or feel tight.”

Though hydration is front and center with this line, the trio pairs well with Versed’s other moisturizing products. Sullivan recommends Skin Soak Moisture Cream, one of her favorites, “to seal in that water” keeping skin healthy and supple.

Aside from featuring clean ingredients and effective formulations, Versed is known for its commitment to accessible pricing. How were you able to set such competitive, compelling price points without sacrificing quality?

Having spent her career in skincare for over 25 years, Sullivan has an eye for formulations. As such, she’s proud to say that “Versed products stand toe-to-toe with products triple our cost.”

She cites several factors that play into this. First is their scaled roll-out through Target, where the brand launched within six months of its inception—and still finds itself today. Second is Versed’s commitment to stock componentry vs. spending on custom packaging. The latter of which, Sullivan notes, offers no end benefit to the consumer. Finally, Versed is formula-first in its focus—in contrast to other brands that market expensive ingredients without the added payoff.

During a time when inflation keeps our beauty budgets tight, it’s impressive to see a brand like Versed bring quality, non-toxic products to consumers for under $25. Can your go-to beauty brand say that?

Soft Launch Gentle Hydrating Cleanser

My Review: I’ve always been picky with my cleansers. There’s nothing I hate more than the feeling of a cleanser that strips my skin, leaving it dry and tight. What’s more, I also double cleanse in the evening, starting with an oil-based cleanser (my favorite is from Nusa Holistick) to remove my top layer of makeup. After that, I want a cleanser that brightens and hydrates the skin before applying my serum. Thanks to the Soft Launch’s hyaluronic acid, my skin appears noticeably plumper and smoother after use. It’s squeaky clean without that too clean feeling—IYKYK.

Highlights: A low-lather cleanser that gently but effectively cleans the skin without drying it.

Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic Acid, Pro Vitamin-B5, Green Tea Extract, and Aloe Leaf Juice

Versed Hydrating Trio

Water Rush Hydrating Eye Gel

My Review: I’ve long been an eye cream skeptic. Why should I be shelling out $50+ for something that seems to do little beyond moisturizing my under-eye area? (Even after using some of the most notoriously expensive creams, the dark bags persist.) Well, that was all for naught, because $12.99 is all it takes to brighten and hydrate this delicate area—and fend off any sign of wrinkles. I love that this product feels like a cream/water-based gel hybrid. It doesn’t go on too thick while still flooding the skin with hydration (key for softening fine lines). I apply a few small dots around my eye area both in the morning and evening. Whereas I’m overly cautious not to use too much of the more expensive creams, I have no qualms about picking up a new tube of this on my next Target run.

Highlights: Travel-friendly and hydrating, this under-eye treatment blends the lightweight feel of a water-based gel with the intense moisturization of a cream. The best part? It pairs perfectly under makeup, with zero creasing.

Key Ingredients: Five types of Hyaluronic Acid, Pro-Vitamin B5, Green Tea Extract, and Aloe Leaf Juice

Water Rush Intensive Hydrating Serum

My Review: I’m a serum junkie, through and through. (All the money I save on refusing to buy expensive eye creams, I spend on luxurious serums.) But once again, Versed is doling out effective formulations with my beauty budget in mind. Though the most expensive product of this hydrating trio, the Water Rush Intensive Hydrating Serum floods the skin with a combination of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds (I’m currently obsessed with Aloe Leaf Juice for that very reason). The result is hydration that deeply penetrates the skin, strengthening the skin barrier and keeping hydration locked in. I’m mindful to use this on my neck and chest as well. Those often show the first signs of aging and can benefit from a rush of hydration as well.

Highlights: A lightweight, non-sticky hydrating serum (in a travel-friendly, airless pump) that pairs perfectly as a final step before your favorite moisturizer.

Key Ingredients: Pro-Vitamin B5, Green Tea Extract, and Aloe Leaf Juice

The tides are changing, and there’s a shift in how the beauty industry—and society as a whole—talks about aging. Rather than forever trying to preserve our youth, we’ve collectively oriented our focus to embracing ourselves every step of the way. But in a world where anti-aging treatments—invasive and otherwise—are right at our fingertips, how do we make sense of the person it seems the world wants us to be? Answer: rituals and routines that make us feel our best—regardless of what anyone has to say about our wrinkles. And for me, retinol for sensitive has been an absolute godsend.

Sure, I’ve tried Botox and dermal fillers, and when administered properly, they can do wonders. But as much as I’ve loved the results, I’ve learned to lean into this graceful aging hero that’s a mainstay in derm-recommended skincare routines. Many experts I’ve spoken with consider retinol non-negotiable—and among editors, the much-hyped ingredient is often touted as a miracle worker.

Featured image from our interview with Sabeena Ladha by Suruchi Avasthi.

The Best Retinol for Sensitive Skin

But as magical as retinol can be, it’s not without its drawbacks. Striking the right balance with the powerful ingredient is crucial for achieving those glowy, optimal results. For a little skincare assistance, we tapped dermatologist, Dr. Nancy Samolitis—co-founder and medical director of FACILE dermatology + boutique—and esthetician, Matthew Miller—whose namesake salon is found in West Hollywood—to answer all our burning questions. From buffering for sensitive skin to the best retinol for every concern—it’s all right here.

What is retinol?

Retinol is a type of retinoid, a class of chemical compound derived from Vitamin A, which increases the production of collagen and promotes cell turnover. Simply put: retinol is a form of Vitamin A that’s available in over-the-counter skincare products.

How Retinol Works

One of retinol’s superpowers is the ingredient’s ability to speed up cell turnover, which keeps sluggish skin cells from becoming trapped in pores (which can cause inflammation), leading to brighter, fresher skin.

“Retinol’s anti-aging benefits are due to repair of cellular damage and normalization of the cells in the top layer of the skin,” Dr. Samolitis says. “When cells are turning over at a healthy rate, skin appears smooth and glowing instead of rough and dull.”

Is retinol safe to use on sensitive skin?

Ultimately, retinol is safe to use on all skin types. However, little adjustments—like starting slow or buffering your retinol—may be helpful for first-timers. “Retinol gets a bad rap for irritating sensitive skin,” Miller says. “While this can be true, it’s all about formulation. Prescription-strength Retin-A or tretinoin can be a little intense, which is why it’s very important to start slow.”

For more sensitive skin types, Miller recommends looking for Retinal/Retinaldehyde. This derivative usually offers amazing results while causing less irritation. “If you’re still nervous, you can start by buffering your retinol product by applying it after your moisturizer,” he advises.

Woman applying makeup in mirror.

Potential Side Effects

Though flaking is never pleasant, it’s important to remember that a little bit is completely normal when you begin using a product as strong as retinol. “Your skin needs to adjust to retinol,” Miller notes. “In the beginning, some may experience drying, flaking, and maybe some redness. This is temporary, but like previously stated, always start slow (one to three times a week) in the beginning.”

And I’m sure we’ve all heard of the dreaded retinol purge. Retinol can cause clogged pores and breakouts—proof that sometimes, your skin has to get worse before it gets better. For most people, this stage lasts anywhere from 2-4 weeks, but it depends on the strength and potency of your product.

How often should you use retinol?

As your skin adjusts, you can work up to using retinol daily, as long as you’re not seeing side effects. Of course, this depends on what kind of formulation of retinoid you’re using. The best plan of action is to adhere to what your esthetician or medical professional suggests. Also, be sure to only apply retinol products at night, and remember to wear plenty of sunscreen during the day.

Woman using sauna.

Are there areas where we should avoid using retinol?

The neck and chest area tend to be more prone to irritation when it comes to things like retinol or exfoliation, says Miller but those areas can still receive the ingredient. After applying retinol to your face, he recommends using any leftover product on your neck and chest to slowly introduce the ingredient. For the delicate skin under the eyes, look for formulations of retinol that have a lower potency and a moisturizing base.

Runner Up, Best Retinol for Acne: Differin Adapalene 0.1% Acne Treatment Gel

Customer review: “I developed cystic acne in my early 20s that consisted of painful breakouts all over my face. I started using this last year and assumed it wouldn’t work (that month of purging is normal). My process: I used a CeraVe cleanser every morning, then applied this gel and continued with a moisturizer (CeraVe) afterwards as not destroy my skin barrier. It is now year later and my acne is GONE and I do not break out at all. This wasn’t a quick process for me and I did not notice immediate results, even 5 months in. I highly recommend this product and I hope it works for you the way it did for me, but have patience.”

The Best Retinol for Discoloration: The Inkey List SuperSolutions 1% Retinol Serum

We’ve long loved The Inkey List for its affordable, effective formulations, and the brand’s retinol serum is no different. Featuring both Apricot Kernel Oil and Squalane, the formula is deeply nourishing, smooths skin texture, and is the best—and most gentle—retinol serum for brightening dark spots.

Size: 1 oz.

Key Ingredients: Retinyl Acetate, Granactive Retinoid, Squalane

Customer review: “Love this product. I am using it together with niacinamide and it makes my skin glow the next morning. My skin tone is getting better and better. Recommended to my sisters and ordered for them too.”

Runner Up, Best Retinol for Discoloration: La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum

“This product combines retinol and niacinamide for resurfacing with potent brightening effects,” Dr. Samolitis says.

Size: 1 oz.

Key Ingredients: Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water

Customer review: “I really could not believe the visible difference in just a few days. I was amazed. I receive consistent compliments on my skin after using the product for about three weeks. It will now be a staple in my skin care routine!”

The Best Retinol for Dull or Dry Skin: Shani Darden Retinol Reform

“It contains a gentle retinol and exfoliating lactic acid to smooth uneven texture without dryness,” says Dr. Samolitis, who also named the Shani Darden product her favorite cream-based retinol.

Size: 0.03 oz., 1 oz.

Key Ingredients: Encapsulated Retinol, AHA, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract

Customer review: “I absolutely love this product! It is so nice and has made my skin feel absolutely amazing. I have truly noticed a different in both the feel and appearance. This is definitely a must have in a luxury skincare routine.”

Runner Up, Best Retinol for Dull or Dry Skin: VERSED Press Restart Gentle Retinol Serum

As suggested by Miller, this gentle serum comes highly recommended for first-time retinol users. Formulated with sensitive skin in mind, the VERSED product delivers all the positive effects of the “holy grail” ingredient without leaving your skin in a panic. It’s definitely one of the best retinols for sensitive skin.

Size: 1 oz., 2 oz.

Key Ingredients: Encapsulated Retinol, Bakuchiol, Arophira

Customer review: “I will continue to purchase this product over and over. This was one of the very rare times I was shocked at how well it worked for the bumps and redness on my arms that had developed over the last 6 months. My arms feel so much smoother and the bumps and redness have diminished over the last month of using this product. I have incorporated it into my nightly routine for my arms and neck. This has also helped to soften/diminish my tech neck lines.”

The Best Face Masks for Sensitive Skin

1. Camille’s Top Pick: Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask

The Camille Styles team has sworn by this viral mask for years because of how it revives parched and tired skin overnight. The nourishing formula is jam-packed with gentle skin hydrators like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide to replenish and smooth even the most sensitive skin types. Even if your skin is pretty reactive, you can rest assured your complexion will stay calm and happy because this mask is non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, and also has the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance.

2. Camille’s Other Favorite: Activist Manuka Honey Mask

Honey isn’t just a sweetener to add to your food. Antioxidant-rich Manuka honey, in particular, is known for its powerful healing properties, and Camille loves using this mask from Activist Skincare when she’s experiencing any sort of skin flare-up.

Made with 100% Manuka honey, this luxe yet simplistic formula may help clear up rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and acne. If you’re not struggling with any of those skin woes, this is still a worthy addition to your routine since it can help promote skin regeneration and leaves behind a healthy glow.

3. Camille’s Splurge Pick: Blue Lagoon Mineral Mask

People travel thousands of miles (and spend thousands of dollars) to step into the geothermal waters of Iceland’s Blue Lagoon. The springs are known to have anti-aging benefits and help enhance the skin barrier. Luckily, you can experience the revitalizing power of the Blue Lagoon from the comfort of your home with this mineral-rich mask. The formula is infused with bioactive Blue Lagoon Seawater, which can help calm your complexion, regardless of whether you use it on your face as an overnight mask or all over your body as a plush restorative cream.

Sheet masks are a quick and easy way to increase hydration, and few compare to Neutrogena’s affordable Hydro Boost mask. Dermatologists constantly recommend this brand (and product) for how it quenches dry skin in contact with hyaluronic acid. The gel texture also adds to the overall treatment since it can soothe and balance skin as you wear it.

Pro tip: Store it in your fridge for 30 minutes before using for extra calming coolness.

5. Best Face Mask for Dry Sensitive Skin: Youth to the People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask

If you’re after plump, radiant, soft skin, this mask is a must-have. Filled with antioxidant-rich super berries (think acai, prickly pear, and goji berries) as well as THD Ascorbate (a potent yet gentle form of vitamin C), the thick overnight mask feels like a rich cream that envelops the skin. Come morning, your complexion will look brighter and bouncier, like you just came from a high-end facial.

6. Best Brightening Face Mask for Sensitive Skin: Tatcha Violet-C Radiance Mask

Some people with sensitive skin may have a complicated relationship with vitamin C. While it’s considered the gold standard for brightening and evening out skin tone, the ingredient can oftentimes cause irritation. However, Tatcha crafted the ideal vitamin C-infused mask so those with sensitive skin can reap the benefits sans irritation. Violet-C combines two forms of the antioxidant with the brand’s signature Hadasei-3 complex to deeply hydrate and boost radiance. You’ll see a difference in how you glow after just one treatment.

Pro tip: You can use Tatcha’s “Is This Right For Me?” quiz on the product page to find out if the formulation will gel with your skin type.

7. Best Calming Face Mask for Sensitive Skin: Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask Extreme Detoxifying Hydrator

Redness doesn’t stand a chance against this ultra-calming cucumber gel mask from Peter Thomas Roth. Whether you struggle with rosacea or are dealing with a pesky sunburn, slathering this across your face will provide you with some instant relief.

Botanical extracts like cucumber, papaya, chamomile, bilberry, and aloe vera quickly soothe and draw moisture into the skin, helping speed up the reparative process and warding off any future dryness. Best of all, you can use it either as a quick at-home spa treatment or leave it on overnight for a major boost of hydration.

8. Best Overnight Mask for Sensitive Skin: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Face Mask with 10.5% Squalane

Every winter, my skin freaks out due to the dry, cold temperatures. As soon as I feel my skin starting to get dry and tight, I pull out this thick balmy mask. Mega hydrators, including squalane—a natural moisturizer that locks hydration into the skin—and glacial glycoproteins make the skin a water magnet to keep it hydrated through even the driest of seasons. Since introducing this into my routine, flakes and dry patches have disappeared for good. Plus, it’s paraben- and fragrance-free, which adds major points for folks with sensitive skin.

9. Best Clay Mask for Sensitive Skin: Mara Spirulina + Ashwagandha Volcanic Sea Clay Detox Mask

Most clay masks can be a bit too stripping for sensitive skin, but this one is an exception thanks to its combination of volcanic ash, algae, and ashwagandha (a plant that can help boost hydration). The creamy clay formula gently detoxes pores and keeps irritation at bay. Rather than feeling tight after washing this off, your skin maintains a soft and supple bounciness courtesy of hydrating honey and soothing green tea.

10. Best Exfoliating Mask for Sensitive Skin: Alpyn Beauty Wild Huckleberry Brightening Peel Mask for Sensitive Skin

Exfoliating is usually a one-way ticket to irritation for those with sensitive skin. However, Alpyn Beauty cracked the code and developed an ultra-gentle mask that delicately sloughs away dead skin, blackheads, and other impurities without leaving you red, raw, or dry. The secret lies in an all-natural eight-acid complex that utilizes good-for-you alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) to dissolve dull, dry skin. It also contains chamomile and colloidal oatmeal that help deeply moisturize and soothe the skin to maintain a happy complexion.

11. Best Hydrating Mask for Sensitive Skin: First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Oatmeal Mask

All it takes is 10 minutes for this mask to work its magic and rebalance the most dehydrated complexions. With colloidal oatmeal as the hero ingredient—a dermatologist-recommended skin soother that can boost hydration and calm eczema flares—this mask helps the most sensitize skin types. Shea butter and sea buckthorn also magnify the restorative benefits of the oatmeal to keep your skin soft and conditioned.

12. Best Face Mask for Acne-Prone Sensitive Skin: Peach Slices Snail Rescue Intensive Wash Off Jelly Mask

Acne-prone sensitive skin can be tricky: You want a lightweight mask that won’t clog pores or cause any adverse reactions while still addressing breakouts. This mask does all of that with the help of snail mucin. The featherlight jelly has become a popular ingredient in the skincare world. It helps repair texture and nourishes every inch of your skin to diminish the appearance of acne scars, discoloration, and dehydration.

What to Consider When Shopping for Face Masks for Sensitive Skin

Ingredients

Regardless of your skin type, it’s always important to look at the ingredients list before using a new product. However, this is crucial for those with sensitive skin. Some of the most common additives in skincare can be known to cause irritation (including fragrances and essential oils), so you’ll want to ensure the face mask you choose only contains the gentlest ingredients. Colloidal oatmeal, hyaluronic acid, squalane, and cucumber are four ultra-nourishing ingredients that are known to soothe and replenish the skin barrier, making them more than ideal for sensitive skin. The majority of the masks on our list contain at least one of these.

Your Concerns

Is your skin extra dry and flaky? Are you struggling with an acne flare-up or dealing with rosacea? Think about your skin’s specific needs before selecting a face mask. By choosing one catered to the concern you’re trying to address, you’ll get one step closer to achieving clear, bouncy, healthy skin.

If you’re looking to pack on the hydration, look for a mask with mega hydrators like glycerin and hyaluronic acid. The Summer Friday’s Jet Lag Mask contains both. For those with acne-prone skin, the Peach Slices Snail Rescue Intensive Wash Off Jelly Mask will help clear up breakouts and prevent acne scars. As for rosacea, you can’t go wrong with the super soothing First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Oatmeal Mask.

Pro tip: Allergic reactions can sometimes be a symptom of sensitive skin, so make sure to perform an allergen test prior to using a new product. Apply a small amount of the product to a clean patch of skin on the inside of your arm and leave it on for the instructed time. After 7 to 10 days, if you don’t experience any itchiness, swelling, or redness, you’re good to go. As always, if you have any big concerns, you can talk to a dermatologist to make sure you’re using products that won’t irritate your skin.

Packaging

Most often, masks will come in one of two formats: Either a squeeze tube or a tub. The packaging has no effect on the performance of the formula itself and comes down to personal preference. That said, dermatologists often recommend opting for tubed products, as it’s easier for bacteria to manifest and contaminate products in tubs when you’re scooping the product out with your bare hands. If you opt for a tub, make sure you’re always using clean hands to apply the product.

Open up my medicine cabinet and it’s immediately obvious: this girl is a skincare junkie. I’ve tested all the best moisturizers, decided which eye creams are worth the splurge, and found serums to rival any in-office treatment. But with so many brands entering the space every day, it can feel impossible to keep up—and decide where to direct your beauty budget. The brand that sits front and center on my (admittedly overcrowded) skincare shelf? Jordan Harper’s Barefaced.

Now, I’m wary of anything buzzy. As much as I love diving into trends and dissecting new-to-me beauty rituals and routines, I want the science and anecdotal evidence as proof. With celeb backing and the expertise of a nurse practitioner advising every formulation, I knew I needed to get my hands on Barefaced for myself.

Jordan Harper, Founder of Barefaced, Shares Her Glowy Skin Secrets

Barefaced first came on my radar after I caught tennis darling and lifestyle brand founder Paige Lorenze dishing about the products on Instagram stories. Her AM skincare ritual leans on the brand’s antioxidant-packed Toning Pads to exfoliate and the Overachiever to hydrate and soothe. At the end of the day, the Hydrating Lotion and Everyday Eye Hero offer some much-needed moisture before going to bed.

But because I know that so much of social media is smoke and mirrors, I went straight to the source to better understand the efficacy behind these buzzed-about products—and why our favorite celebs can’t get enough.

Paige Lorenze uses Barefaced to get her signature glow. How do the Barefaced products in her skincare routine work together to give her that coveted, lit-from-within complexion?

At Barefaced, our philosophy is “Less but Better.” We intentionally formulate all our products to work synergistically, ensuring you get the maximum benefit from each. Using the core four products, we call them the Bare Necessities, to promote long-term skin health is what really gives the lit-from-within glow.

When your skin is properly exfoliated, hydrated, and protected the glow speaks for itself!

What should everyone include in their morning and evening skincare routines?

After treating thousands of patients as a nurse practitioner, I recognized a common theme: my patients didn’t know which products they actually needed for their skin to be healthy. You can do all the face masks and hydrating serums you want but if you’re not using the core four products to prevent, protect, correct, and repair the skin, your skin lacks the essential nutrients it needs to be healthy. Remember, glowing skin is healthy skin.

The core four products include an exfoliant, vitamin C, a retinoid, and SPF. At Barefaced, we understand that the skincare industry is vast and starting a daily routine can feel overwhelming and confusing. To simplify this process, we’ve curated The Bare Necessities bundle. This collection features the core four products essential for improving skin health and strengthening the skin barrier.

Exfoliant

These treatment pads are packed with AHAs, BHAs, antioxidants, and hydrating ingredients to tackle dullness, rough texture, and breakouts.

Vitamin C

Formulated with pro-collagen ingredients, Liquid Gold brightens, defends against damaging environmental stressors, and minimizes the appearance of premature fine lines and wrinkles.

Retinoid

Our key ingredient, RetinAL, surpasses all retinols in strength by about 20 times while working about 11 times faster. Encapsulated in a time-released formulation, RetinAL Skin Therapy also includes bakuchiol and other soothing ingredients to ensure it’s well tolerated with minimal sensitivity.

Sunscreen

These broad-spectrum, oil-free SPFs are crafted for everyday wear, catering to all skin types and tones.

We always say, if you’re not wearing a daily sunscreen, investing in other skincare is a waster. Daily SPF is the ultimate anti-aging product. What sets [our sunscreens] apart is their added skin benefits. They’re more than just sunscreen, formulated with these key ingredients:

  • Caffeine. Works as an antioxidant to delay the skin’s aging process and helps tighten the skin/pores.
  • Niacinamide. Provides anti-aging benefits while brightening, helping control oil production and reducing redness.
  • Lactic Acid. Helps reduce the appearance of dark spots, boosts natural moisture levels of the skin, and improves skin’s firmness.
  • Hyaluronic Acid. Provides intense hydration and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How to Build on Your Basic Skincare Routine

Once you’ve established this strong foundation, you can gradually expand your routine to target specific concerns like breakouts, dark spots, or skin aging. Prioritizing healthy skin initially before tackling other concerns is vital, as healthy skin is better equipped to address your additional concerns more effectively.

When I joined the Camille Styles team (officially full-time this month!), I knew I’d be surrounded by inspiring women. What I didn’t expect was that I’d join a team of beauty experts in their own right. So when I recently decided to overhaul my beauty routine, I naturally turned to Slack: “Help a girl out—drop your must-have beauty products!” Thirty minutes (and too many messages to count) later, my cart was full of tried-and-true products based on years of use—and of course, the most emphatic recommendations.

Beauty products on counter.

Our Editors’ 23 Must-Have Beauty Products to Stock Up On

These products have completely transformed my beauty routine. Now, I’m asking the inevitable: can I bring my entire makeup bag to the island?

Because we don’t gate-keep around here, I’m dropping every editor’s must-have desert island product in the list below. Whether you find yourself stranded on a desert island this summer (best of luck) or curating a beauty routine refresh, look no further. Consider this your insider scoop on all the beauty products our team can’t live without.

Wander Beauty Mile High Club™ Length and Define Mascara

“Finally: I’ve found the best lengthening, volumizing, and defining mascara that doesn’t leave my lashes clumpy. It’s waterproof but easy to take off at the end of the day. With just a couple of swipes, my lashes are equally lengthened and give that flirty, doe-eyed look that I’m 100% obsessed with.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

19/99 Precision Color Pencil

“Maybe controversial these days, but I’ll never give up on lining my lower eyelid! I started tightlining for a night out during the peak 90s grunge revival/indie sleaze era in high school and I’ve never given it up. I’ve gone through many an eyeliner pencil, and when you’re lining that close to your eye, you need something that glides across your lid. I’ve never used anything as effective or smooth in just one swipe than this 19/99 color pencil.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Glo Skin Beauty Oil Free Tinted Primer

Any good desert island product needs to be a multitasker—and this primer is the ultimate. It gives a lightweight coverage with a blurring effect to hide pores, nourishing skincare ingredients, plus SPF 30. I wear it on its own to work out in the morning, then layer my makeup on top during the day. Color-correcting, evening out skin tone and texture, and boosting your makeup’s wear-time—it truly does it all!” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

City Lips Plumping Lip Gloss

“I had ditched lip glosses long ago, not loving how sticky and too high-shine the majority were. But this gloss offers the perfect amount of moisture for a dewy pout. What’s more, not only does it look good, but it also offers a dramatic plumping effect immediately and then gradually builds over time. Formulated with hyaluronic acid and oligopeptides, it volumizes lips while offering major hydration.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

MERIT Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Foundation and Concealer Stick

“As someone who has previously opted for more full-coverage makeup, I haven’t worn foundation in all of 2024, thanks to MERIT Beauty’s Perfecting Stick. Marketed as not a foundation and not a concealer, this one product has replaced both in my makeup bag. I apply it under my eyes, on any blemishes, and on my high points, then blend with a brush for an even, lightweight base.” — Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Skincare Foundation

“This is hands down the best tinted moisturizer I’ve ever used. The formula is filled with good-for-your-skin ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, so it’s a beauty buy that doubles as a skincare product. Plus, it’s ideal for getting that dewy and glazed donut-y look.” — Megan Beauchamp, Contributing Editor

Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick

“Blush is by far my favorite part of my makeup routine. I’ve perfected the ultimate three-step blush application that keeps its color and glow all day and night. The base? Westman Atelier’s blush stick in Petal. The non-toxic, creamy formula coupled with the prettiest rose-y color makes this product worth every penny. Steps two and three involve setting the cream blush with a powder blush, and topping it all off with an honorable mention, Charlotte Tilbury’s Highlighter Wand in Pinkgasm.— Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara

It’s everything you want from a mascara: elongates lashes, doesn’t pill or smudge, and—most importantly—washes off easily. You normally get one or two but not all three. I don’t know how they do it, but I’ve been wearing this mascara for 3+ years and it’s my forever go-to.” — Brittany Chatburn, Content Marketing Director

Kulfi Beauty Kajal Eyeliner in Rain Check

As someone who rarely wears makeup, it probably seems interesting that my choice for a desert island would be blue eyeliner. But on days when I just need to infuse my look with a little pop and joy, this eyeliner works its magic. I use a very thin line of blue eyeliner, but it’s just enough that when I’m talking to people while wearing it, they almost always have to stop and call out how much they love the blue. It’s the perfect way to subtly elevate your eyes, and the formula is super creamy and easy enough for even me to apply.” — Suruchi Avasthi, Food Editor

Jones Road Miracle Balm

“The Jones Road Miracle Balm is a game-changer for anyone seeking a no-makeup makeup look. It is ultra-moisturizing on the face and gives an effortlessly natural look with a dewy, radiant finish. Apply it with your fingers or a brush, which makes it the perfect low-maintenance desert island product. The balm is incredibly easy to use and buildable. It’s the perfect hero product for minimalist beauty routines.” — Brandy Joy Smith, Motherhood Contributor

Chanel Le Rouge Duo Ultra Tenue

“There is no better lip stain on the market and I will die on that hill. I’ve been using this product for YEARS. My favorite colors are Bright Raspberry, Strawberry Red, and Soft Rose, but you can’t go wrong on any to your liking. The stain stays on ALL day and ALL night, isn’t drying with the gloss coating, and doesn’t transfer to your drinking glass or partner’s lips.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm

“The Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm is nothing short of magic and would accompany me on a desert island or tropical getaway. Its buttery texture and long-lasting hydration make it the best product to always have on hand. I just repurchased it in Vanilla for the third time—it’s that good!” — Anna Decker, Social Media and E-Commerce Manager

Supergoop! Glowscreen in Golden Hour

“I am no one until I put on my Supergoop! Glowscreen in the morning. It quite literally brings me to life, adding the perfect amount of color and glow to my otherwise tired-looking face. I wear it alone on a day-to-day basis, but this sunscreen is also the perfect shimmery base for my makeup routine (even at night). Major props to Supergoop! for making sunscreen such an addicting part of my skincare/makeup routine. My skin will thank you in 20 years!” — Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

“Listen, I know this product had its moment in 2022. But there hasn’t been a night since I treated myself to this lip mask two years ago where I don’t put this stuff on before bed. Long story short, it’s my ride-or-die. My lips stay soft and hydrated year-round and I haven’t had chapped lips once, even in winter. My go-to is vanilla!” — Kristen Garaffo, Design Editor

Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops

“I live for a faux glow. A bit of self tan instantly boosts my confidence and I’ve tried everything from lotions to foams to water. Hands down, my favorite is Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops. A few drops in your moisturizer turns it into a self tanner, plus you can apply it without a mitt. It’s so easy and you can control how deep your tan is by the amount of drops you use. I love!” — Kristen Garaffo, Design Editor

Tower28 Beauty SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray with Hypochlorous Acid

“This product changed my life, and I can’t stop talking about it to everyone. The start of my skincare routine, a top off when my skin is feeling irritated, and a preventive measure before applying makeup so I don’t break out—I use this multiple times a day, every day. If you haven’t heard of this universal healing spray, it’s quite literally magic in a bottle.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Skin Pharm Sheer Defense SPF

When I first tried this SPF, I was in shock. A hydrating and tinted sunscreen? How? Diving in further, I saw that it contains hyaluronic acid. I love how lightweight and dewy my skin feels. If I’m on a deserted island, I’m going to need a good SPF that helps even out my skin tone for a flawless glow.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm + Red Correct

I’ve been searching my entire life for a product like Hero Cosmetics’ Rescue Balm. As someone who suffers from rosacea, regular foundation doesn’t cut it when it comes to a flawless face. This is THE product for me—and it’s always the first product I reach for on no-make, makeup days. It goes on green, with the same consistency as a concealer, but blends effortlessly into the skin, combatting any redness. It’s lightweight, and can be applied under makeup or on its own. Simply put—I couldn’t live without it.” — Casey McKee, Editorial Intern

Dr. Loretta Intense Replenishing Serum

“This ceramide serum is my secret for putting on/taking off makeup. Layered beneath my makeup, it’s the perfect primer that creates a canvas to help my products stay on all night. I use a ton of liquid-based products, so a hydrated face is key to making sure they look dewy all night and don’t dry and crack in the middle of the dance floor. And after the night ends, when I’ve scrubbed my face raw to get off all the products, I need a hydrating serum to replenish my complexion so I wake up refreshed—even after a late night. This versatile serum is both. I also slather it on my skin when my barrier needs some TLC. It’s a staple in my travel bag since it can do it all.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Bondi Sands Technocolor 1 Hour Express Self Tanning Foam

My favorite self-tanning product, hands down. It’s foolproof to apply and the color develops within an hour. I use the one made for olive skin tones, and it gives the impression that you’ve just come back from an exotic two-week holiday.” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

Renee Rouleau Mint Renewal Cleanser

“I can’t stop talking about this product. I love it so much that my mom bought it for me when I went back to Nebraska to visit. The peppermint oil feels so refreshing and the light exfoliating jojoba beads keep my skin glowing.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Soma Ayurvedic Jasmine Body Oil

“My favorite part of my self-care routine in the evening is using body oil after a hot shower. This oil has the most incredible scent, and seamlessly absorbs into your skin, leaving it soft and hydrated. Plus, this oil makes for the most perfect, self-care moment to just pause and breathe. It’s definitely a little bit of a splurge, but it’s well worth it for how amazing it makes me feel.” — Suruchi Avasthi, Food Editor

DERMAFLASH LUXE+ Advanced Sonic Dermaplaning + Peach Fuzz Removal

“My favorite self-tanning product, hands down. It’s foolproof to apply and the color develops within an hour. I use the one made for olive skin tones, and it gives the impression that you’ve just come back from an exotic two-week holiday.” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

The summer solstice is my Super Bowl. I was born in the summer and my name literally means ‘The Sun.’ When the weather gets warmer, I defrost. I relish al fresco dining, summer outfits, and the smell of coconuts and vanilla (my signature summer scents). As a Black woman, I grew up inundated with beauty standards that valorized lighter skin and told me to get out of the sun. But for years, I would bare my skin to the sun in pursuit of my summer shade. I’ve always felt most myself after a sun-drenched day.

Cut to a decade later and I’m paying for my devotion with endless bottles of sunscreen and piles of protective clothing. While I still enjoy a healthy amount of sun exposure—my serotonin depends on it—I make sure to apply and reapply sunscreen fanatically. And you’ll never see me out without a hat.

Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About Self-Tanner

Finding the best self-tanner has proved to be my sun-obsessed solution. Luckily, the past few years have transformed the self-tanner industry into a certified skincare category. From skin-first formulas to BIPOC-led brands for darker skin tones, sunless tanner is no longer a guaranteed way to look orange on vacation. Instead, it’s our secret to glowing skin year-round. Which is why we’ve dug deep to discover the best self-tanners.

How to Choose the Best Self-Tanner

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been burned—maybe literally—by self-tanners. Thankfully these days, gems abound. To find the best of the best self-tanners, we went to the experts. Ahead, Sabrina Johnson, spray-tan stylist and founder of Everything Made For You, and Nichelle Temple, a celebrity esthetician and founder of Inderma Studio, dish on everything to know about shopping for and applying the best self-tanners. Let’s get glowing.

Benefits of Using Self-Tanner

Self-tanners combine the best of both worlds: glowy, natural color without compromising your skin health. On your body, a self-tanner can hide keratosis pilaris and hyperpigmentation like nothing else.

“Self-tanner and spray tans are not only a great solution to replace sitting in the sun, but they are also safer,” says Johnson. “You can achieve a natural glow without the risk of sun damage caused by UV radiation, which can cause skin cancer, premature aging, and hyperpigmentation.”

“It is the best solution if you like the look of a bronzed sun-kissed glow,” adds Temple, who notes formulas’ significant improvements and innovations over the past few years. “Luckily, self-tanners have come a long way in terms of application, scent, and longevity.”

The Myth of ‘Safe Tanning’

Any color is a sign of skin damage—disheartening, I know. Especially if you forgo sunscreen or use a lower SPF to deepen your shade. Temple warns against it, even in service of a tan. She encourages staying mindful of the following top summer skincare mistakes:

  • Not wearing sunscreen regularly
  • Forgetting to apply sunscreen on sensitive areas like ears, lips, back of the neck, and tops of feet and hands
  • Neglecting to reapply sunscreen
  • Not applying enough sunscreen

Some people also apply self-tanner, then forget additional sun protection. Don’t make that mistake. “Self-tanner will not provide any sun protection, so it is still important to protect the skin with sunscreen even if it looks like you have a ‘base tan.'”

Self Tanner vs. Salon Tanning

As a spray tan stylist, Johnson is an expert at giving clients the perfect glow in the salon. However, she notes that you can achieve a similar look at home.

“Self-tanners are considered a DIY application. You can apply them at home using various products like lotions, mousse, and serums. Self-tanners are generally less expensive, but results can vary based on product, and application may require trial and error for beginners.”

To get the salon-like glow at home, be sure to choose the right tanner for your skin type, skin color, and desired shade.

Unpacking Self-Tanner Ingredients

According to Temple, look for naturally derived dihydroxyacetone first. “This is the most popular ingredient. Some bonus ingredients would be a formula that is botanical-based and hydrating with aloe vera, glycerin, or jojoba to keep the skin moisturized.”

Johnson agrees. Get a self-tanner that can both hydrate and make your skin glow. Johnson also recommends antioxidants to give your skin a natural glow, too.

Look for these ingredients in your self-tanner:

  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Glycerin
  • Aloe vera
  • Vitamins A, C, and E
  • Antioxidants: (Niacinamide, Resveratrol, Coenzyme Q10, Ferulic acid, Copper, Zinc, Selenium)

To keep your glow going, avoid anything that will dry out your skin and undo your skin prep. Johnson advises: “Avoid self-tanners with harsh chemicals like parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.” Alcohol, which is found in many quick-drying formulas, can also be harmful, but it can exacerbate dryness and dehydration.

How to Make Your Self-Tanner Last Longer

“To get the most long-lasting and natural-looking tan, make sure you have exfoliated and moisturized the body before application,” advises Temple, explaining that you should prioritize areas like the elbows and knees.

Johnson also recommends a full skin-prep and self-tanner routine:

“The biggest mistake you can make when using self-tan is not prepping the skin. Skipping exfoliation can lead to uneven application and patchiness. Avoid chemical exfoliants like AHA, BHA, and retinol before and after tanning as they will make your tan fade faster.”

Remember: when it comes to applying product, less is more. As Johnson notes, you can always add another layer but you can’t stop the process once it’s applied. “During your first shower, only use lukewarm water, no soap, and make sure to get all the bronzer off, otherwise you might develop streaks.”

Lastly, hydration is key. Drink water and moisturize daily to maintain an even tan for as long as possible.

The Best Self Tanners, Tested and Reviewed

These days, you can find the right self-tanner for you without having to risk turning orange. “Each product offers different benefits, so consider your skin type, desired outcome, and any skin sensitivities when choosing a self-tanner,” says Johnson.

I love to claim the term “minimalist” despite all evidence to the contrary. I call my interior design style warm California minimalism, but that just means my furniture is mostly white and beige. The piles of books, excessive tchotchkes, and disco ball don’t exactly scream pared down. My closet is the same—a far cry from the idealized capsule wardrobe I have in my head. Still, none of this compares to my hoard of beauty products. As an editor who’s always on a plane to somewhere, it was high time I learned how to pack skincare efficiently. And today, I’m sharing my secrets with you.

Janessa Leone how to pack skincare.

How to Pack Skincare for Travel

Being on vacation feels amazing. Packing for vacation, on the other hand? A whole different story. But somehow, I feel a thrill when I win the expert-level game of Tetris that is packing my beauty products in a carry-on. Anyone who has traveled for longer than a week with only a carry-on must have their rules. I stick by Camille’s genius 3-bag and 2-shoe rules to streamline my outfits. Then, I implement my tried and true technique for how to pack skincare.

Packing Rules

My packing principles are simple: brutal honesty and versatility. The first is about process. Give it the same energy you give a closet clean out when you feel like changing your life in the middle of the night. Take out everything you want to bring, then ask if each products checks the following boxes:

  • Under 100 ml. Domestic flights within the US are more lenient with this rule—especially if you have TSA pre-check. But international flights? Don’t risk it.
  • Use at least every other day. Your products should be versatile and those that you use morning, noon, and night. But an exfoliator and a retinol can pass, too.
  • Weather appropriate. My favorite moisturizer (the EADEM Cloud Cushion Moisturizer, if you’re wondering) works best on my skin in the winter. So I wouldn’t bring it to a hot city, no matter how much I wanted to.
  • Top shelf, not holy grail. I like to bring my favorite products with me, but nothing I’m not ready and willing to lose at London Heathrow Airport or to an unfortunate spillage incident.
  • Lightweight, tight packaging. No glass jars. No fickle lids. Keep them light and tight.
Travel skincare products.

Prioritize Powders

Some airports are strict about how much liquid you can bring in total—not just per product. I’ve lost many a setting spray to LHR, so I make sure all my liquids can fit into one of their tiny plastic bags and then be repacked into my makeup bags.

A loophole: stock up on powders and solids. These breeze through TSA and are often less bulky to pack than liquids. It’s a win-win.

Supercharge Your Skincare

When I travel, every product has to boast a bevy of benefits. I travel with one or two serums max—one for the night and one for the day. So everything from my cleanser to my sunscreen has to maximize its impact.

Embrace Minimalist Beauty

Alternatively, use vacation as a time to go back to the basics. When I’m on vacation in a city, I do the most to combat pollution and sweat with the fewest products. When I’m on a beach or by a pool, I barely want anything on but sunscreen. Like digital detoxing, taking the opportunity to try skinimalism and give your barrier a break will automatically pare down your choices. For lightweight, high-impact products, here are my picks:

Make the Most of Multifunctional Makeup

Take a page out of Gen-Z’s book and embrace multitasking makeup products. Kids these days stick to multi-sticks and lip-cheek-nose-eye-everything products. While I don’t think an eyebrow palette is cringe, I do think it’s too bulky to take on vacation. So embrace multi-sticks, tinted serums, and multi-functional makeup products alongside your classics.

Summer packing travel.

How you pack matters as much as what you pack

Here’s my hot take: I don’t love the travel-sized bottles you can transfer your own products into. It’s always a messy process that ends up in an unfortunate spill. So, I make sure to choose travel-sized products that close tightly and fit neatly into a makeup bag.

Choose the right bag(s). I use a clear bag for gels and oils and a mesh bag with more give for everything else. These keep your clothes safe in case of any leaks. If you have a little more room in your carry-on, I have traveled with a vanity bag that includes a mirror and pockets for flat things like my contacts and hydrogel masks.

Keep that skincare on you. If you’re following the 3-bag rule, you’ll have a carry-on, a tote, and a small purse or fanny pack that fits inside. I keep my skincare in the tote, so it’s accessible and easy to take out at TSA if necessary. It’s also within reach if I need to do any in-flight skincare.

The Most Effective Eye-Tightening Creams Experts Say to Stock up On https://camillestyles.com/beauty/eye-tightening-creams/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/eye-tightening-creams/#comments Fri, 17 May 2024 10:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=160232 Radiance within reach.

The post The Most Effective Eye-Tightening Creams Experts Say to Stock up On appeared first on Camille Styles.

Tightening my under eyes and upper eyelids had never been a concern for me until I hit my mid-twenties. As I started to etch closer to 30, I gradually began to lose fat and collagen around my eyes, causing them to look more hollow, droopy, and tired. I was frequently being asked if I got enough sleep. (Or worse, told I looked exhausted.) But it had nothing to do with sleep. Instead, my fresh, youthful, and plump eyes had been replaced by a permanent baggy look. It was then that I embarked on my search for the best eye-tightening cream.

Before this fateful shift in my skin, I was focused on acne, hyperpigmentation, and reversing sun damage. Incorporating an eye-tightening cream was never a priority. I rarely used an under-eye cream, let alone a hyper-focused one.

So, when it came to finding the right solution to tighten my eye area (and address the fine lines that had been cropping up), I tested a plethora of creams, serums, and tools to help slow the signs of aging. To be clear, this was only the beginning. Incorporating hydration, tools such as gua sha, micro-needling and microcurrent, healthy sleep habits, and supplements in conjunction with an eye cream is what I found to be the holy grail of tightening and lifting my eyes. If I strayed away from not combining all these things, I noticed a huge difference in appearance.

The Experts on Eye-Tightening Creams

I asked Dr. Nancy Samolitis, co-founder of Facile, and Kerry Benjamin, aesthetician and founder of Stacked Skincare, why we actually need eye creams, best practices, and their favorites when it comes to tightening the eye area.

Dr. Samolitis explained that the skin around the eyes often shows signs of aging before other areas of the face or body. This is often due to a loss of collagen and elasticity (which is what I was experiencing), leading to a darkened appearance, dull, crepey skin, and fine wrinkles. Some people genetically have excess fat under the eyelid skin and this can also be more pronounced with aging and sun damage, creating the appearance of under-eye “bags.”

Beauty products eye tightening creams.

What to Look for in an Eye-Tightening Cream

Because the skin around your eyes is far thinner and more delicate than the other skin on your face, Benjamin shared that this area is also prone to dehydration but generally requires lighter moisturizers because of the risk of milia—the tiny, white, difficult-to-remove bumps that can be caused by using rich moisturizers around the eye area.

The Skinny on Eye Serums

She recommended investing in an eye serum loaded with active ingredients. Eye serums are lighter in texture, which means they penetrate the skin and deliver anti-aging ingredients more effectively. They also generally contain a higher concentration of active ingredients than eye creams, which means you’ll see faster results.

Tips for Use and Application

Both Dr. Samolitis and Benajmin emphasized starting sooner than later when it comes to preventive treatments. Incorporating a tightening cream in your mid-20s could save you from needing intensive treatments in the future. As far as the frequency of use, twice a day is recommended unless there is an active ingredient such as retinol that could cause irritation.

But what is the best way to actually apply eye cream? The rationale behind using your pinky finger or ring finger to apply eye cream is due to the importance of a gentle tapping motion rather than pulling on the skin, explains Dr. Samolitis. And Benjamin agrees. If you pull or tug when applying eye cream it can lead to bagginess and sagginess.

Eye-Tightening Treatments

Beyond eye creams, Dr. Samolitis often uses in-office medical treatments like micro-needling, laser resurfacing, and PRP treatments that can improve the under-eye skin by repairing sun-damaged cells and producing new collagen to thicken the delicate tissue.

Benjamin suggests at-home tools to pair with their cream or serum such as a derma roller to help stimulate collagen and plump the skin along with an ice roller to give you a temporary tightening effect while reducing puffiness.

I live in Los Angeles, so naturally most of my conversations begin with some quip about the weather. Of course, the last couple of years have been anything but normal, with weeks straight of nothing but rain. As such, everyone in the city has been floundering. For months, plans were canceled, raincoats were purchased, and umbrellas were excavated out from the depth of our storage containers. We may have kept up with our SPF face routine, but seeking out the best sunscreen for body wasn’t on anyone’s radar.

But now that we’re finally getting some sun, we’re making the most of it. Going to the beach is like a sport in LA. Everyone has their favorite spot, and most of us have a beach bag packed and ready to go on any occasion. As a beauty editor, it won’t surprise anyone that mine contains a mini pouch filled with beach-ready skin and body care. Here’s what’s inside:

How to Find the Best Sunscreen for Your Body

In my time around the block—or the beach, as it were—I’ve tried many body sunscreens. Some have made their way into my beach bag, others have never seen the light of day. And while I usually evaluate my body products based on touch and texture, I consulted a dermatologist to discover what I should really be looking for in the best sunscreen for body.

Dr. Caroline Robinson is a board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist, with subspecialty expertise in alopecia, preventative skincare, and ethnic skin dermatology. She is also the founder of Tone Dermatology.

“There are considerable differences in the products available now with many great options,” says Dr. Robinson. “I always tell my patients finding the right sunscreen is like finding the right pair of jeans; you have to try out a few, and it can take a while, but once you find the one you like, you will love it and want to wear it every day.”

My Criteria for Determining the Best Sunscreens

After our conversation, I established these criteria for the best body sunscreens:

  • Key Ingredients: What’s in it?
  • Type of protection: Is it a physical/mineral or chemical sunscreen?
  • SPF: What level of protection does it offer?
  • Size: How much do you get? And (important!) can you pack it in your carry-on?
  • Water Resistance: How long does it stay effective in the water?

What to Consider When Selecting a Sunscreen

Dr. Robinson is quick to recommend non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) sunscreen formulas. She also stresses that your sunscreen should be free of the following:

  • fragrances
  • dyes
  • parabens
  • oil
  • certain chemicals like oxybenzone

“For daily use, use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher (the minimum SPF recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology),” the dermatologist encourages. If you’re spending a prolonged period in the sun, opt for an SPF 50 or higher.

Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreens

Mineral sunscreens: Contain active ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on top of the skin’s surface to deflect and scatter harmful UV rays.

Chemical sunscreens: Contain UVB- and UVA-absorbing chemicals that convert UV rays into heat through a chemical reaction, which then releases the heat.

Dr. Robinson recommends opting for a mineral sunscreen if you have sensitive skin. “Chemical sunscreens can sometimes irritate and exacerbate existing conditions,” she notes. For acne-prone skin, oil-free sunscreens are best. And if you’re sweating or coming into contact with water, water-resistant sunscreen offers longer-lasting protection.

Sunscreen Application Tips

Mineral sunscreens immediately protect your skin upon contact, but chemical sunscreen should be applied at least half an hour before going out into the sun since it requires some time to absorb.

It’s best to reapply every hour to hour and a half if you are participating in activities that cause sunscreen to wear off like swimming or anything that prompts sweating. If just sitting in the sun without excessive sweating (not dermatologist recommended!), a good rule of thumb is to reapply every two hours.

The Best Sunscreen for the Body

You never know what you like until you’ve tried it. And I’ve tried a lot of different options—including some of the most viral sunscreens out there right now. But are they worth the hype? Sunscreen isn’t the most glamorous product on the market, so when people rave about one, I’ve generally found that it lives up to my expectations.

Here are some of my favorites that I’ve tried, tested, endlessly researched—and yes, loved.

Our Top Picks

  1. Best Overall: Bask Suncare SPF 30 Lotion & Continuous Spray – $40 at Bask Skincare
  2. Best Sweat-Proof Sunscreen: PLAY Everyday Lotion – $36 at Supergoop!
  3. Best Fragrance: Coola Clear Sunscreen Spray Tropical Coconut – $28 at Target
  4. Best Texture: Vacation Classic Whip – $22 at Bluemercury
  5. Best High SPF: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen – $9.99 at Target
Bask sunscreen for body

Best Overall: Bask Suncare SPF 30 Lotion & Continuous Spray

The wear and tear on the packaging says it all: this duo is a staple in my beach bag. From the lotion’s creamy texture to the spray’s refreshing mist, this is a set that makes me excited to apply my daily sunscreen. Perfect for application and reapplication, it’s proof that the best sunscreen is the sunscreen you’ll actually wear.

Whenever I apply it around a group of friends, they perk up at the light coconut and vanilla scent. Invariably, they ask what sunscreen is that? and I respond by spraying the group with a cloud of my staple sunscreen. No gatekeeping here. It’s the brand I recommend to everyone.

  • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene, Aloe, Cocoa Butter
  • Type of Protection: Chemical
  • SPF: 30
  • Size: 5.5 fl oz and 4 fl oz
  • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Feel Good Bundle

This SPF 30 bundle is non-toxic and suitable for sensitive skin. Enriched with aloe and antioxidants, it’s also a treat for your skin. Pro tip: start with the lotion then reapply with the spray throughout the day.

Supergoop body sunscreen

Best Sweat-Proof Sunscreen: Supergoop! PLAY Everyday Lotion SPF 50

Summer is the season for lounging by the pool and digging your toes into the sand, but let’s face it, it’s also the season for sweat. No one wants to slather on sunscreen, only for it to sweat off and be left with unprotected skin. Supergoop! has been making the rounds on the internet for a while now, and for good reason.

The PLAY Everyday Lotion is a fan favorite, and this water and sweat-resistant sunscreen is perfect for you and your loved ones. It comes in a variety of sizes, is gentle enough for both face and body, and the largest 18-fluid-ounce jug is ideal for kids and families. It’s great for all skin tones, absorbs quickly, and is my go-to for outdoor workouts.

  • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene,
  • Type of Protection: Chemical
  • SPF: 50
  • Size: 1 fl oz, 2.4 fl oz, 5 fl oz, 18 fl oz (so many choices!)
  • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

PLAY Everyday Lotion SPF 50

This water and sweat resistant sunscreen goes on smoothly and is gentle, yet robust enough for both face and body. Great for the whole family!

Coola Clear Sunscreen Spray Tropical Coconut

Best Fragrance: Coola Clear Sunscreen Spray Tropical Coconut

The smell of most sunscreens can instantly transport me back to pool days and vacations from my childhood, and while the nostalgia is lovely, there’s something elevated and chic about a sunscreen that has a scent reminiscent of a perfume. Coola Clear Sunscreen Spray in Tropical Coconut will have you smelling like a beachy goddess—perfect for a vacay with the girls or lounging poolside with a book.

Coola is a clean beauty brand, and this non-aerosol sunscreen is non-greasy and absorbs quickly after you rub it in a bit. And of course, the smell is divine. It’s a sunscreen that feels luxurious and it’s one that I want to put on. A win all around!

  • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Octisalate, Octocrylene
  • Type of Protection: Chemical
  • SPF: 30
  • Size: 6 oz
  • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Coola Clear Sunscreen Spray in Tropical Coconut

A quick-absorbing, non-greasy spray that smells like summer in the tropics. What’s not to love?

Best Texture: Vacation Classic Whip

If you want a sunscreen that you’re excited to incorporate into your morning routine, look no further. With its whipped cream-inspired packaging, it’s a whimsical way to start your morning. You won’t forget it, that’s for sure. And I’ve tried this one myself (as well as other sunscreens from the brand) so I can assure you: it’s not just a gimmick. Yes, it went viral on TikTok, but the actual sunscreen is a creamy, easy-to-apply texture. None of the stickiness you associate with the sweet treat that it’s inspired by.

My only warning: keep this one on your shelf and out of your day bag. The spray nozzle is a little volatile—something I learned the hard way when it exploded in my bag. Keep it in a cool, dry place.

  • Key Ingredients: Homosalate, Octocrylene, Octisalate, Avobenzone, Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera, Vitamin E
  • Type of Protection: Chemical
  • SPF: 30
  • Size: 4 fl oz
  • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Vacation Classic Whip SPF 30

Banana extract and coconut oil give this mousse its signature smell while aloe and its signature oil blend make it lightweight but moisturizing.

Neutrogena Body Sunscreen

Best High SPF: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen

When SPF 50 doesn’t cut it, a 70 SPF sunscreen is your next go-to. Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch is a fantastic high SPF sunscreen that goes on smooth and doesn’t feel greasy at all. This lotion also has a subtle, fresh scent (we love!) and the price can’t be beat. If you’re looking for a high SPF sunscreen, be sure to pick this up on your next Target run!

  • Key Ingredients: Avobenzone, Homosalate, Octisalate, Octocrylene,
  • Type of Protection: Chemical
  • SPF: 70
  • Size: 3 fl oz, also available in a spray
  • Water-Resistance: 80 minutes

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen

A drug-store favorite, this Neutrogena sunscreen is for anyone who needs a hefty SPF that’s easy on your wallet.

Other Body Sunscreens to Consider

Kopari Sun Shield Body Glow Gel

Somewhere between a lotion and an oil is a gel. If you’re seeking something iridescent, this Kopari gel shimmers when it catches the light to create a glowy effect while protecting your skin. It acts as a serum, sun protectant, and glow oil without any tackiness and residue buildup. It absorbs fast to prevent transfer and oiliness, making it sweat-free and perfect for oilier skin.

Sun Shield Body Glow Gel

Hydrate and glow with this shimmering sunscreen that absorbs fast and leaves behind an iridescent shine without any stickiness. Avocado and coconut oil also provide intense moisture.

EltaMD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47

I’m an Elta MD fan because, like many lovers of the brand, I had it recommended by a derm. But most people—myself included, until recently—grossly underappreciate its potential as a body sunscreen. Formulated for the face and body, it’s gentle and fuss-free. For sensitive skin, eczema, or easily irritated skin, this is a great pick.

EltaMD UV Pure Broad-Spectrum SPF 47

This dermatologist’s favorite for the face and body is a lightweight mineral sunscreen fortified with two different types of physical sun protectants, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Plus, vitamin C helps prevent signs of aging and protects from environmental damage.

CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 Body Lotion

You can’t go wrong with CeraVe. For anyone with sensitive skin, or just seeking a simple but effective sun solution, CeraVe’s mineral sunscreen physically shields your skin while deeply hydrating your skin barrier. Its ceramide-rich formula makes it a powerful moisturizer, while hyaluronic acid hydrates for all-day softness. Experience no irritation as this formula creates a protective barrier around your skin to reflect UVA and UVB rays.

CeraVe Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen Lotion for Body SPF 50

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide create a physical shield for your skin while skin-favorites hyaluronic acid and ceramides nourish and fortify your body’s skin barrier, making it a perfect solution for sensitive skin.

Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion

Approved by The Skin Cancer Foundation, this sunscreen is by beach bums, for beach bums. If you spend a lot of time in this sun, this creamy coverage offers hydration and protection. Vitamin E, a potent antioxidant, helps prevent premature aging and damage from environmental stressors. All this comes in one affordable package, lining the shelves at your local drugstore, waiting for you to make it a summer staple.

Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Lotion

Simple but effective, this sunscreen offers moisturizing sun care with antioxidant-rich vitamin E. Slather it on liberally for all-day SPF 50 sun protection.

Black Girl Sunscreen for Face and Body

The white cast on many body sunscreens is especially problematic for anyone with more melanated skin. For people with darker skin tones, physical sunscreens have historically been out of the question. We either have to deal with a super obvious white film or forgo sunscreen. (Perhaps this is what perpetuated the myth that melanin-rich skin doesn’t even need sunscreen.) But don’t believe it! Darker skin does need sun protection. And finally, brands like Black Girl Sunscreen are creating quality, hydrating products for the face and body that shield your skin without leaving any white residue behind.

Black Girl Sunscreen Make it Hybrid with Zinc and Lavender Sunscreen – SPF 50

This moisturizing sunscreen contains rich skincare ingredients like avocado, jojoba, and cacao to deeply nourish your skin and promote healing, softness, and even complexion. Meanwhile, carrot juice contains vitamin C to even breakouts and boost melanin, while sunflower oil calms inflammation from sunburn and irritation.

I don’t believe in gatekeeping. As a beauty editor, I make my living by sharing what I love with literally anyone who will listen. So, it makes sense that I’ve become the defacto recommendation-giver in my friend group. On more than one occasion, I’ve had friends call me from the aisles of Trader Joe’s or Target to ask for my beauty hot takes and essentials. And my most recent deep-dive of late? French pharmacy skincare, of course. Seriously—the products may change, but the hype never gets old.

Now that it’s pre-summer, everyone is asking for travel reccos. While I relish giving restaurant and shopping recs in my favorite cities, my friends are often surprised when I tell them to beeline to the local pharmacies. I got my tretinoin in Mexico City (do as I say, not as I do), and I buy a specific CeraVe oil cleanser every time I’m in London. But nothing can beat French pharmacy skincare. Whenever I’m in Paris, I spend more time in French pharmacies than in French bistros. Thanks to endless perusing and tips from my Parisian friends, I’ve come to know French pharmacy skincare like the back of my hand.

Why are we so obsessed with French beauty?

There’s something so seductive about the idea of French girl beauty. From the minimal skincare routines to the daring red lips and sophisticated coiffs, I’m always on a mission to replicate the effortlessness of the quintessential French girl. My Parisian friends tell me that the key of French girl style is curation. They find what they love, and they stick to it rather than endlessly chasing trends. But it takes a while to cultivate those holy grails. And with so many options to choose from, how do you know what’s right for you?

Everyone is always waxing poetic about the best face mists, serums, ointments, and oils they found in Paris. More than the fancy counters at giant boutiques like Le Bon Marché or Galeries Lafayette, French girls flock to their local pharmacies to buy their favorite beauty products.

The Best French Pharmacy Skincare Products to Stock up On

Stepping into a French pharmacy is like Disneyland for the beauty-obsessed. While some of the most ubiquitous brands have made it stateside, it’s rare to see all their offerings at once. From the popular holy grails to the more obscure picks, I’ve tried more French pharmacy skincare products than I can count.

If you’re planning a trip to France or standing in the aisle of a French pharmacy as you read this, I recommend going into multiple pharmacies and walking the aisles to discover new brands and products. To help you navigate it all, I’m breaking down the best French pharmacy skincare essentials to stock up on.

Our Top Picks

Pritika Swarup applying French pharmacy skincare products.

Best Overall Product: Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Multi-Purpose Dry Oil

Why I Love It: If I could use one product for the rest of my life, it would be this. The end-all, be-all of French pharmacy skincare, this Nuxe body oil has earned its mainstream success. This dry oil absorbs fast on the body, seeps deep into the skin—and when applied to the hair—delivers both a shine and a sweet smell.

Insider Tip: In Paris, different sizes, scents, and variations of this Nuxe oil all line the pharmacy walls. I can’t pick a favorite so I get the original formula, plus the Shimmer and the Riche oils.

Key Ingredients: Macadamia Seed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Rosemary Leaf Extract

Best for Breakouts: Embryolisse 3-In-1 Secret Paste

Why I Love It: Everybody everywhere is always talking about the Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentré. But don’t sleep on this multi-purpose paste. It’s described as an anti pimples, anti-shine mask, and purifying cleanser. With a kaolin clay base, it’s a detoxifying holy grail that I like to slather on my face when I feel a breakout coming and use it as both a mask and a cleanser.

Insider Tip: The paste is formulated for combination, oily skin, or acne-prone. Proceed with caution if you have highly sensitive skin.

Key Ingredients: Hydrolyzed Cicer Seed Extract, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract

Best for Oily Skin: Embryolisse Exfoliating Milk Powder

Why I Love It: Embryolisse is the gift that keeps giving when it comes to imaginative products for any skin concern. Think of this gently purifying powder as their answer to Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant. Its base of rice, coconut, and milk powder turns into a foamy skin milk to gently exfoliate and deliver baby-soft skin.

Insider Tip: Think of this as the French girl’s version of a skin milk. Because of its silky, milky texture, it’s a great option to layer beneath other products. Yes, even if you have oily skin.

Key Ingredients: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Extract, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch

Best for Dry Skin: Avène Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream

Why I Love It: When my skin is dry, I stock up on every cica-based product I can find. From K-Beauty cica balms to the La Roche Posay Cicaplast Balm (another French beauty must-have), it’s one of my favorite ingredients for irritation and dryness. This daily cream restores and protects. Plus, it leverages a unique postbiotic to boost your microbiome.

Insider Tip: This cream also comes in a spray for you to take on the go.

Key Ingredients: Avène Thermal Spring Water, Copper Sulfate and Zinc Sulfate

Best Face Mist: La Roche-Posay Thermal Spring Water Spray

Why I Love It: The springs of the French town La Roche-Posay are famous for their healing powers. The water is full of natural minerals—like the powerful antioxidant selenium—that make thousands flock to the healing springs every year for transformative results. While some facial sprays are just scented water, this mist is literally bottled up from the fountain of youth.

Insider Tip: Other French face mists I love: Avène Eau Thermal and Embryolisse’s anti-pollution Eau Active.

Key Ingredients: Antioxidant-Rich Spring Water (Selenium, Copper)

Best Micellar Water: Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water

Why I Love It: The cornerstone of a French beauty routine is micellar water. What can’t it do? It’s a cleanser, a makeup remover, and a hydrating toner. This pH-balancing micellar water is a classic for a reason.

Insider Tip: Use it as the first step in a double cleanse for deeply-cleaned skin.

Key Ingredients: Propylene Glycol, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract

Best Over-the-Counter Retinol: A313 Retinol Pommade Vitamin A Night Moisturizer

Why I Love It: The hype is real: retinol will change your life. Particularly this retinyl palmitate ointment, with a formula that rivals most over-the-counter retinoids. If protecting and producing collagen as you age is your goal, this Vitamin A pomade delivers.

Insider Tip: Because retinol speeds up cell turnover, you’re effectively unclogging your pores with every application—great if reducing acne is your goal. And as always, apply SPF after your retinol!

Key Ingredients: Cera Microcristallina, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopheryl Acetate, BHT

More French Pharmacy Skincare Products to Consider

While I consider the French pharmacy skincare products above the best of the best, if you’re in the mood for a shopping spree, these are more heavy-hitting favorites I love to recommend.

Biafine Emulsion Cream

Of course the French can make ointment sexy. The hottest summer skincare trend is building back your skin barrier. While barrier products abound, everyone talks about Biafine’s magic-like results. Usually only available with a prescription in the U.S., it’s a thick ointment that dermatologists often prescribe their patients for post-procedure healing. Use it on particularly dry skin or any scars for faster wound healing.

Boiron Homéoplasmine

Slugging is all the rage for a reason. It’s flooding your skin with hydrating and moisturizing ingredients to get that coveted glass skin. I slug with this French answer to Vaseline. It’s a thick occlusive that also contains healing ingredients such as calendula to soothe any irritations and wounds. Apply it to your lips before lipstick for the perfect, French girl red pout.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Light Fluid Face Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 60

From French pharmacies to TikTok, this sunscreen is everyone’s favorite. The serum-like texture sinks into the skin without leaving a white cast or pilling under makeup. SPF 60 never looked so good.

Caudalie Vinosun Protect Invisible High Protection Spray SPF 50

To no surprise, this is a multi-purpose sunscreen that works for your face and body. I like it best as a body sunscreen thanks to its moisturizing grapeseed oil base. Since it’s a spray, it’s convenient to apply and reapply.

PaperMints CoolCaps

Standing at the counter of a French pharmacy as we speak? Grab a few tubes of these mini mints. They pop in your mouth and release a minty burst of liquid for instant freshness. Think of them as a chicer version of a Listerine strip.

The post We Tested the Best Microcurrent Devices—These Are Our Honest Thoughts appeared first on Camille Styles.

It’s no secret that I am skincare obsessed. My mom put me on a cleanse, tone, and moisturize routine at 14, and I’ve been committed to optimizing my skin health ever since. (These are the products I use!) From years of skincare deep-diving, I’ve become intrigued with researching the best microcurrent devices. These are tools that work by delivering an electrical current to skin cells to lift and tighten in all the right places. I love nothing more than going down the research rabbit hole to decipher what ingredients, products, and tools actually work. So, diving deep into the best microcurrent devices seemed like an advantageous opportunity to do exactly that.

Testing the Best Microcurrent Devices

I’m a huge fan of microcurrent during my in-clinic facials. (If you live in LA, go see Matthew Miller for The Lift facial or Camille Fields for her remodeling face treatment.) But I wanted to find a way to extend the benefits of those treatments at home. With so much information (and misinformation) online, I decided to collaborate with my fellow skin aficionado, Camille, to test and review six of the top brands in a bid to find the best microcurrent devices to use at home.

What is microcurrent?

Microcurrent is a non-invasive facelift using a low-level current of electricity to stimulate the facial muscles like a “workout” for the face. It has been clinically tested as a safe and efficacious treatment both in-clinic and at home to encourage definition, collagen development, and growth of ATP. (Adenosine triphosphate, an energy-carrying molecule found in the cells of all living things.)

The Best Microcurrent Devices

The benefits of microcurrent are instant, but just like exercise, the best results are cumulative. About five minutes a day, 2-3 times weekly will help encourage the muscles to stimulate collagen growth. Experts recommend using at-home microcurrent devices between professional appointments to maintain the best results.

If you’re looking to give yourself the best microcurrent facial at home, keep reading for our honest thoughts.

Our Top Picks

  1. Best Overall: NuFACE Trinity Starter Kit – $350 at SkinStore
  2. Best for Beginners: NuFACE FIX Line Smoothing Device and Serum – $165 at Ulta Beauty
  3. Best On the Go: ZIIP HALO – $399 at ZIIP
  4. Best For Strength: FaceGym Pure Lift Face – $520 at FaceGym
  5. Best Affordable: Essia Ultrasonic Exfoliating Skin Spatula – $139 at Vanity Planet
  6. Best For Face And Body: NuFACE NuBODY Skin Toning Device – $399 at SkinStore

Best Overall: NuFACE Trinity Starter Kit

In the same way that exercise is good for your body’s health, it’s also beneficial for your skin’s health. Also known as “fitness for your face,” the NuFace Trinity sculpts, tightens, and contours the face to improve skin texture and tone and to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging skin.

Why I Recommend It:

The beauty of microcurrent is the instant results. After just five minutes, you can see a visible difference—skin is lifted, tighter, and brighter and glowier overall. I love to use my NuFace right before I have a special event or gathering because my skin just beams afterward.

It’s also the perfect primer for your skin before applying makeup. And it’s completely painless. You will feel a stronger pulsation on your neck where the skin is thinner or sometimes around your teeth. If this happens, reduce the settings on the NuFace. I set it to the highest for the cheeks, temples, and forehead and down to one or two around my mouth, eyes, and nose area.

Pros:

  • Instant results in a short amount of time. You can physically see and feel how healthy, bright, and tight your skin is after using this tool.
  • Comes with an app that includes step-by-step tutorials for best results.

Cons:

  • The best results are cumulative, meaning you have to use this often to experience long-term collagen growth and facial sculpting. If you’re disciplined and willing to put in the daily work, this is the tool for you.

The Details

  • Suggested use: 5-20 minutes per day, five times per week for the first 60 days. After 60 days, 2-3 times per week for maintenance.
  • FDA cleared? Yes

Five-star customer review: “I have been consistently using the NuFACE Trinity+ Kit for over a month now and have definitely noticed more lifted and toned result. At 41, I’ve experienced some facial sagging along with the usual fine lines. I love that this targets the deep tissue. The only challenge for me is just being consistent and working this into my routine, but it’s worth it in my opinion.”

Camille Styles nuface microcurrent device

Best for Beginners: NuFACE FIX Line Smoothing Device and Serum

Since fine lines around my eyes are my main focus when it comes to anti-aging, I was immediately intrigued when I heard about the FIX Line Smoothing Device from NuFACE. Here’s how it works: You apply the included FIX Serum around areas of focus, then move the device using the signature ‘feathering’ technique: a quick erasing motion. The result is a smoother, tighter appearance around the eyes, mouth, forehead, and nasolabial folds that’s immediate, with increased improvement over time. — Camille

Why I Recommend It

The FIX is the 1st FDA-cleared pen-size microcurrent device for cosmetic use. It’s rechargeable, so you can truly take it on the go. It works by delivering bursts of gentle microcurrent energy that help plump, smooth, and tighten the skin in small targeted areas.

Pros

  • The biggest pro for me? It’s fast! Unlike many of the other microcurrent devices on the market, the FIX targets the appearance of fine lines around the eyes, lips, and forehead within three minutes.

Cons

  • The main con would be that it’s small, so it’s made to treat small areas. Its current isn’t as strong as the Trinity, so if you’re wanting to treat the full face, this is probably not the device for you.

The Details

  • Suggested use: 3-10 minutes per day, five times per week for the first 60 days. After 60 days, 2-3 times per week for maintenance.
  • FDA cleared? Yes

Five-star customer review: “This is my second (I knocked my first off the counter but didn’t want to live without) and really, it is a great little boost to one’s skincare regimen. I feel like my eye area is instantly brighter and tighter when I use it, I can tell the difference myself and I tend to get more compliments too. The lip flick technique works as well! I don’t know why so many said they didn’t see results, perhaps they are younger than I or were expecting something more dramatic.”

Best On the Go: ZIIP HALO

The main difference between this device and other microcurrents on the market is the shape, frequency, and strength of the electrical currents. ZIIP uses different waveform shapes, from soft S-shaped waves to hard-edged building block squares, to produce the optimal outcome for your skin. But it’s also the frequency at which they use them. The device stimulates muscles by switching from lower frequencies to higher frequencies, increasing circulation, plumping, and everything in between.

Why I Recommend It

ZIIP founder and CEO Melanie Simon was coined the “Nikola Tesla of facials” by Forbes. She spent 15 years as an aesthetician specializing in electrical facial treatments (with celebrity clients like Mandy Moore, Sarah Paulson, and Eva Mendes) before she created her multi-million dollar beauty empire.

ZIIP is the only device that offers both nano and microcurrent waves. Nano-current results are long-lasting, while microcurrent offers immediate lifting and sculpting results. This powerful combination creates change on a cellular level. The electrical currents are designed to be both direct and alternating, which flows back and forth to increase ATP, providing “usable energy to skin cells, giving long-lasting results.”

I like to ZIIP on the weekends when I have more time and can invest in a longer treatment because the payoff is huge! The ZIIP gel is $50 a bottle but you get one when you buy the device and you don’t need a lot. As a result, it lasts forever—at least six months if you use it often or longer if you only use it periodically. I have been using my ZIIP for years now and I truly believe in this product.

Pros:

  • Ergonomic design.
  • I love that the app also comes with so many different facial treatments that Simon personally takes you through. (Energize is my favorite for a quick lift.)

Cons:

  • If I had to pick one con, it would be the app. It can feel like an extra step to set that part up first, which is silly because it takes seconds for you to sync the treatment from the app to your device. But sometimes, it is a barrier to entry for me.

The Details

  • Suggested use: Four minutes, 3-5 times per week, with a maximum of 6 times per week when following a short-term treatment plan.
  • FDA cleared? Yes

Five-star customer review: “The ZIIP device really works! My skin is glowy, smoother, and bouncy. I didn’t expect these results.”

Best for Strength: FaceGym Pure Lift Face

If you’ve ever had a workout at FaceGym then it’s very likely you’ve experienced the PureLift in action. Now you can bring their famous Clean + Lift signature treatment home. PureLift’s patented three-wave stimulation uses knuckling motions via the diamond-faceted probes to go deep into your facial muscles. These probes perform EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) all over your face which are mild but powerful currents that strengthen your muscle fibers. That means toning, circulation-boosting, and skin firmness in just 10 minutes.

Why I Recommend It

This tool gets the job done! It’s an incredibly powerful microcurrent device that uses high-and-low frequency impulses to activate, lift, and strengthen the facial muscles. I have used a lot of microcurrent devices on the market and this is definitely one of the strongest.

Pros

  • The fact that it is one of the strongest I’ve used is both the pro and con of this device. I love how deeply it penetrates, but you definitely feel it. It’s not painful at all, but it does wake you up!

Cons

  • My best advice with this at-home microcurrent tool is to start slowly to avoid any type of pinching pain. It has several settings, so I recommend using the lowest first and working your way up as you get used to it. I have been using this tool for about a month now, and I am still on the lower 1-2 settings.

The Details

  • Suggested use: Use for 10 minutes on the face and neck, a minimum of once a week for optimal results.
  • FDA cleared? Yes

Five-star customer review: “I’ve had my PureLift for about two weeks and enjoy using it approximately every other day. I have noticed slight firming around my jawline and forehead, as well as an overall lifted feeling. At 41, I am keen to find a routine that really works to keep my skin healthy and looking its best, and so far I’m impressed.”

Essia Ultrasonic Lifting Exfoliating Wand Microcurrent Device

Best Affordable: Essia Ultrasonic Exfoliating Skin Spatula

This device is like gua sha on steroids. The metal head is shaped to lift and contour to your facial structure as you power up and go over it with microcurrent. The Essia Wand does so many different things. There are three separate modes: Exfoliate, Moisturize and Lift. Usually, I focus on the Lift mode, which uses electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) to stimulate facial muscles, tighten skin, lift facial contours and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. — Camille

Why I Recommend It

This device uses high-frequency, ultrasonic technology and EMS to penetrate the skin by 3-5 mm. The ultrasonic vibrations from the Exfoliate setting work to dislodge blackheads and other impurities from pores, helping fight off rogue breakouts and inflammation. And the Moisturize mode combines ultrasonic oscillation with an anion (a negatively charged ion) flow to help skin attract and absorb your hardworking skincare products more deeply.

Pros

  • I love this tool for how easy and effective it is. The Lift mode has the same relaxing feel as gua sha or facial massage, but its effectiveness is pumped up thanks to the ultrasonic and electrical muscle stimulation. The Exfoliation mode is a spa-level exfoliation treatment at home, gently “scraping” skin to remove dead layers, patchy skin, blackheads, and clogged pores.

Cons

  • The only real con for me is that to make the most of this device, you need to use all three modes regularly. It’s a commitment that I don’t always have time for.

The Details

  • Suggested use: 1-3 times a week. Length of use depends on the mode of use.
  • FDA cleared? Yes

Five-star customer review: “Absolutely amazing product – I got a lot of impurities out of my face and minimized my pores significantly just after one time use. Best purchase I’ve made all year!”

Best For Face And Body: NuFACE NuBODY Skin Toning Device

Much like the Trinity for your face, the NuBODY at-home microcurrent tool is a toning device that visibly helps to firm the skin and appearance of dimples on your body. The microcurrent technology is specially designed with four treatment spheres for a stronger, more targeted delivery of the microcurrent to larger, denser areas like the thigh and butt. — Camille

Why I Recommend It

I wanted to specifically target some stubborn cellulite on my thighs and to tone the skin at the top of my knees where the skin is starting to sag. I definitely notice a difference after using it—skin is smoother, tighter, and firmer. I use it at night to help treat fluid retention and it seems to help with that, but my cellulite also feels more visible at night after sitting down all day for work.

Pros

  • This is another tool that shows visible results after one use!

Cons

  • But… this product is best when used over time. Yes, it works and you can see the difference but it does take time and commitment with regular use. If you commit to the time, you’ll be pleased with the results.

The Details

  • Suggested use: 3-10 minutes per day, five times per week for the first 60 days. After 60 days, 2-3 times per week for maintenance.
  • FDA cleared? Yes

Five-star customer review: “This is a great product. I’ve had an increase in cellulite in my glutes and didn’t know what to do. I went to a salon and did some sessions with a supposedly great cellulite reducer machine and didn’t work, not a bit. I purchased the NuBody because I’ve heard the NuFace is great. I have used it for the past 2 weeks, 5 days a week and have already noticed change. More firm glutes and less cellulite. I definitely recommend it BUT it isn’t easy to use on the back part of your legs, your arms get tired, that could make you not be consistent.”

Never have I ever seen a more genius marketing move than Hailey Bieber’s new Rhode phone case. ICYMI: the celeb beauty founder launched an unexpected product in her viral skincare brand (and yes, we’re all obsessed). But it’s not just any phone case. On the back, it has a built-in holder for your Rhode Lip Treatment. This product placement isn’t just convenient—like any product geared to Gen Z and millennials, it looks good in selfies. All over the internet, fans have been posting their own mirror selfies showing off their Rhode phone cases and Rhode-treated pouts. Talk about organic product marketing.

But the lip treatment itself has received a similar amount of frenzy. Before the phone case dropped, I watched everyone on my feed post “candid” pictures of them reapplying their lip treatment at brunch or tucking it into the string of their bikinis. A good lip treatment is an essential, these pictures implied. And as a beauty editor, I love a good non-negotiable product. Think of it as a desert island pick that you never leave the house without. Today, I’m making the argument for adding lip treatments to your short list of beauty must-haves.

The Expert on Lip Treatments Breaks Down the Buzzy Trend

When you imagine a lip treatment, you might think of Medspa treatments like lip flips and filler. But this latest buzzy beauty product is all about prioritizing lip health. With the rise of trendy makeup must-haves like lip oils, lip glosses, and lip stains, lip treatments are the foundation for a healthy, hydrated pout. For more insights, I spoke with celebrity dermatologist and founder of Macrene Actives Dr. Macrene Alexiades, to hear what’s behind the hype.

Dr. Macrene

Macrene Alexiades, MD PhD FAAD holds three degrees from Harvard University: a BA from Harvard University, MD from Harvard Medical School, and a PhD in Genetics from Harvard University. She is a celebrity dermatologist and founder of MACRENE Actives.

Lip treatments make-up products.

What are lip treatments?

Similar to our eyes, the skin on lips is different as it abuts the mucosal layer. It is thinner and more delicate than other areas of the body, making it more prone to damage.

Lip treatments are designed to not only cover and protect lips but also rejuvenate, repair, and nourish them.

Lip Treatments vs. Lip Balms

Lip balms typically have a lighter texture and feel and can be used daily to offer relief and comfort to the lips but sit on top of the lips without delivering active ingredients. Lip treatments are formulated to target deep hydration and repair of the lips and have richer textures compared to lip balms.

Depending on the product, some treatments should be used once a week, while others can be used multiple times a day to achieve naturally plump and moisturized lips.

What about plumping lip treatments?

Lip treatments in the office include injectable fillers. Macrene Actives High-Performance Lip Filler replaces the need for injections by delivering peptides and micro-encapsulated hyaluronic acid. This achieves a healthier, more natural result.

Other formulas work by irritating the lips—the lips swell in response to an irritant—this is not a good way to plump.

Catt Sadler applying lip treatment

Can lip treatments make your lips dry over time?

The lips’ skin is more sensitive, and people naturally experience dryness and irritation in this area. Most lip treatments are formulated with hydrating and moisturizing ingredients. However, dryness or sensitivities may occur after using a lip treatment if you are allergic to or have intolerances to certain ingredients.

If ceramides are included, these work to repair chapped lips. If someone overuses, this could over-repair some individuals, so keep usage to three to five times per day.

Ingredients to Look for in Lip Treatments

When searching for a quality lip treatment, look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, peptides, and topical ceramides. These ingredients work to deliver hydration and anti-aging benefits and boost collagen while healing the skin’s lips. Organic ingredients are also a plus.

My preference in formulation is an oil-based formula for lips. I use essential oils including coconut oil, goldenrod, and plantageum which are known to be lip-therapeutic. Avoid parabens, fragrances, alcohol, and synthetic colors. These ingredients can trigger dryness, dehydration, and irritation.

Remi Ishizuka applying lip treatment

What is the best lip care routine?

Taking care of your lips should be a daily habit. This can be done by wearing a daily lip balm (with SPF!) that protects your lips’ skin from external elements like harsh weather conditions and the sun and staying hydrated with a healthy water intake regimen.

Lip treatments are great for giving lips an extra boost of TLC during the week to rehydrate and repair them.

How do you heal damaged lips?

Repairing of skin, including lips requires time and a consistent and effective routine. The more consistent you are, the sooner you can see progress in damaged lips. Prioritizing hydration and moisturization of damaged lips and avoiding products that may irritate the lip’s skin is the best method to practice.

The Best Hydrating Lip Treatments

lip treatments come in all shapes and sizes for different concerns. That’s right—there’s more to them than just delivering hydration. If you want a tinted lip treatment or an overnight mask, these are the best options to shop from.

Best Overall: Rhode Skin Peptide Lip Treatment

Believe the hype. The lip treatment that started it all is as good as it looks. With a silky texture and an ingredient list packed with peptides, this deeply nourishes your lips while giving you cool points from the Gen Z in your life.

Key Ingredients: Shea Butter, Peptides, Cupuaçu, Babassu

Size: 0.3 fl oz

Best Hydrating: 19/99 Lip Ointment

When you think of an ointment, you might think of a sticky, tacky texture. Think again. This lip ointment slides on and seals in moisture with a weightless texture. Cupuacu seed butter, olive oil, and ceramides hydrate throughout the day or overnight. I keep this in my bag at all times.

Key Ingredients: Cupuacu Butter, Tripelargonin, Sunflower Seed Oil, Olive Oil

Size: 0.42 fl oz

Best Tinted: U Beauty The PLASMA Lip Compound

This lip treatment does it all. It exfoliates gently with AHAs and BHAs then hydrates with peptides, ceramides, and shea butter. Then beeswax acts as an occlusive to lock it all in. But the most impressive part is how the pigment stains the lips and doesn’t budge.

Key Ingredients: Peptides, Alpha Hydroxy Acid, Salicylic Acid, Beeswax

Size:

Best Overnight: City Beauty City Lips Night Oil

This night oil is, hands-down, the most game-changing overnight lip treatment I’ve tried. I slather it all over before going to bed and wake up to plump, hydrated lips. Supercharged with nourishing ingredients, get ready for hydrated, plumper lips—AM to PM.

Key Ingredients: Portulaca Pilosa Extract, Plankton & Floral Extract, Hyaluronic Acid

Size: 0.23 fl oz

Best for Dry Lips: Typology Paris Repairing Lip Mask 1% Ceramides + Hyaluronic Acid

Mango butter, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid work together to repair even the driest lips. This oil-based treatment delivers visible results after just 15 minutes post-application.

Key Ingredients: Castor Oil, Macadamia Oil, Glycerin, Ceramides, Hyaluronic Acid, Mango Butter

Size: 0.50 fl oz

Best Plumping: Macrene Actives High-Performance Lip Filler

“When I first created [this lip filler],” says Dr. Alexiades, “there was no other product like it on the market. The product includes several active ingredients to naturally plump and moisturize lips, protect them from stressors, and help reduce the appearance of lip fine lines and wrinkles.”

Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic Acid, Coconut Oil, Vitamin E, Shea Butter

Size: 0.27 fl oz

Best for Repair: Tower 28 LipSoftie Lip Treatment

This hydrating lip mask instantly refreshes and gives you a soft, shiny finish. It also works deep in the skin to heal and repair even the driest, cracked lips. It is suitable for all skin types and safe for eczema. I like the clear finish, but it also comes in six different tints for a pop of color.

Key Ingredients: Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, Shea Butter

Size: 0.38 fl oz

Best Oil-Based: Ami Cole Lip Treatment Oil

With a unique oil-to-gloss texture, this lip oil treats and tints to create a versatile product that deserves to be in your handbag and your makeup bag. It uses antioxidants like passionfruit seed oil, while baobab seed oil moisturizes and camellia oil deeply hydrates.

Key Ingredients: Baobab Seed Oil, Camellia Seed Oil, Passion Fruit Seed Oil

Size: 0.15 fl oz

Best Lip Butter: MUTHA Pucker Lip Butter

This lip butter shines with squalane and shea butter working together with natural seed oils to hydrate and prevent moisture loss. It also prevents fine lines by gently exfoliating and boosting collagen production.

Key Ingredients: Squalane, Shea Butter, Avocado Oil, Ceramides

Size: 0.28 fl oz

Best SPF: Cay Skin Deepwater Nourishing Lip Mask

SPF shouldn’t be an afterthought. Yet, many people forget to protect their lips. Hydrate and shield this delicate skin with this treatment that combines sunscreen with lip care. It hydrates with sea moss and aloe stem cells for softer, hydrated, and shielded lips. Bonus: This is one of the biggest lip treatments and will last you for months.

Key Ingredients: Hibiscus Extract, Aloe Stem Cells, Sea Moss, Vitamin E

Size: .7 fl oz

The post I Turned 40 This Year—These Are the Hardworking Skincare Products I Swear By appeared first on Camille Styles.

With over a million search results for the best skincare products for 40s, it’s safe to say I’m not the only one looking for high-performance ingredients to improve my skin health. And that couldn’t be more true as I enter this new phase of my life. I turned the big 4-0 earlier this year and while I don’t ever want to be in my 20s again, I do miss that 20s collagen and high cell turnover. But I’m not writing this to lament about wrinkles and fine lines either. (But I will admit I have gone under the needle and have tried almost every buzzy beauty treatment.)

No, I am embracing my 40s wholeheartedly because, in all seriousness, I have never felt better. I am emotionally more stable and available, I am spiritually connected, and I am physically well and comfortable in my body. (Mind you, it’s always a work in progress.) But, I’m entering this new decade with a newfound confidence in myself. And I can say with certainty: all that wisdom and growth is worth it.

The Best Skincare Products for Your 40s

Today, you’re here to learn about the best skincare products for 40s. Lucky for you, that’s something I love to talk about. I guess you could say I have been skin-obsessed since my mom put me on a simple cleanse-tone-moisturize-sunscreen routine at the age of 14. As an Aussie, where 14,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer each year, the sunscreen part is critical.

Sunscreen is my number one must-have product everyone should wear every day for anti-aging and skin health. And please note, that while I list all of these products here, you certainly don’t need to buy all of them. When it comes to skincare, all you really need is a quality cleanser, toner (yes, I am team toner), moisturizer (or face oil), and sunscreen. That’s it! And for me, it’s all about investing in quality over quantity.

Read on to learn about the best skincare products for 40s that I use in my everyday routine! Some of them I’ve been using for over 10 years. So if you’re in your 30s and looking for anti-aging solutions, you’re welcome to keep scrolling, too.

Editor’s Note: We did a follow-up to this post where we asked two dermatologists to share the best drugstore skincare for your 40s dupes. Read the article here.

The Best Skincare Products for Cleansing

Cosmedix Purity Solution Cleanser

I like to rotate my cleansers depending on how my skin is feeling that day. For my morning routine, I usually reach for an oil cleanser. Why? Well, typically my skin leans dehydrated, making my epidermis especially parched.

This Cosmedix cleanser restores the skin’s natural moisture and removes impurities. It’s also especially great for removing makeup. I have been using Cosmedix for over 10 years now because they have high-performance ingredients and do what they say. I highly recommend an oil cleanser if you haven’t tried one yet, especially for mature skin as it’s super hydrating and moisturizing while being sensitive to the skin. I also love Mara’s oil cleanser and the one from Emma Lewisham, both of which are packed with exfoliating fruit enzymes like papaya.

Agency Cloud Care Duo

A recent addition to our editors’ radars, Agency by Curology differentiates itself in the overly saturated skincare world by formulating personalized prescription products. That’s right, everything you’ll try (and soon love) by the brand is tailor-made to target your skin concerns. You start by sharing your skin goals with a licensed medical provider who then creates customized formulations. From there, you’ll receive check-ins offering tips and formula adjustments to ensure your skincare evolves alongside you—because yes, you should be regularly switching up your routine!

The Cloud Care Duo pairs the efficacy of the brand’s Cream Oil Cleanser with its Weightless Whipped Moisturizer. The result is a fresh, soft, and hydrated complexion that never feels heavy.

iS Clinical Cleansing Complex

I was introduced to iS Clinical about a year ago and have slowly been developing an obsession ever since. The cleansing complex is relatively new to my routine. But after at least four months of using it, I’m hooked. It’s a gel resurfacing cleanser that doesn’t strip your skin. The product is soft and gentle thanks to white willow bark that exfoliates the skin while breaking up any grime or makeup. Beauty editors love it because it works across every skin type and concern. I can use this one every day, multiple times a day, and it won’t leave my skin feeling dry, stripped, or squeaky. An all-around excellent addition to your skincare routine.

COSMEDIX Purity Clean Exfoliating Cleanser

In the past, foaming cleansers got a bad rap for being too stringent and stripping the skin of all of its oils. But let me introduce you to the new generation. Clarify is incredibly gentle and hydrating. The salicylic acid exfoliates the skin and helps prevent breakouts while the aloe vera soothes and heals. But this cleanser’s genius ingredient is the probiotics which encourage healthy bacteria on the surface. 10/10 recommend.

Renée Rouleau AHA/BHA Blemish Control Cleanser

When my skin is feeling hormonal or blemish-prone, I bring out the big guns. Renée Rouleau is renowned for her arsenal of acne-fighting products and this one really nailed it. It packs a punch in the acids department mixed with gentle biodegradable jojoba beads which reduce acne, bumps, blackheads, and clogged pores while lifting away red discoloration and scarring leftover from blemishes. I use this cleanser about three times a week—prevention rather than cure!

The Best Skincare Products for Toning

Cosmedix Purity Balance Exfoliating Prep Toner

The jury has been out on toner in recent years but I swear by this one. Personally, I prefer a chemical exfoliation to a physical one. This one has salicylic and L-lactic acid combined with tea tree oil to cleanse, clarify, and smooth the skin. It’s great for blackhead management and removing excess oil or makeup. I’ve even been known to use it as a cleanser on the trips I’ve forgotten to pack mine.

The Best Skincare Products for Boosting

Cosmedix Cell ID Nutritive Defense Serum

There are a lot of serums out there. (I repeat, a lot.) But this one deserves a spot on your shelf. It’s packed with peptides, amino acids, and antioxidants which are great for aging skin. I can’t emphasize it enough: this serum is like giving your thirsty skin a big drink. The ingredients create a skin barrier that locks in moisture and keeps my skin feeling plump and dewy all day.

iS Clinical Hydra-Cool Serum

Speaking of drinks, let me introduce you to the ultimate glass of water for your epidermis: the hydra-cool serum from iS Clinical. I know hyaluronic acid has been hyped a lot in recent years, and for some people it can be drying (the opposite effect of what you want in an HA). But this serum has worked wonders for me. Perhaps it’s the additional vitamin B5, kojic acid, and menthol. Whatever the case, I find it really plumps up my skin and keeps the hydration locked in.

City Beauty Skin-Lifting Booster

This droplet serum is designed to be mixed with other skincare products or to be used alone for a lifted and sculpted look. I love blending a few drops into my moisturizer as a final step in my routine to supercharge my skin with advanced peptides (i.e., amino acid chains that support the skin’s firmness and promote elasticity). I have a few other City Beauty faves on this list—the products’ almost-instant results are unmatched.

The Best Skincare Products for Correcting

iS Clinical Active Serum

The iS Clinical Active Serum has truly changed my skin. It reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation, redness, acne, and smooths and evens skin tone, resulting in a clearer and healthier-looking complexion. A total no-brainer.

Cosmedix Elite X-cell+ Brightening Serum

If you’re looking for a brightening serum that packs a punch, look no further. This x-cell is from the Cosmedix Elite line, so it’s only available from licensed estheticians. But trust, it’s worth the extra step for the niacinamide and microencapsulated retinol. It does have witch hazel which my skin doesn’t have a problem with. If you react to it, you might want to opt out of this one. Don’t worry, I have another favorite brightening serum coming up.

iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance Plus

If you can only invest in a few products then make sure one of them is a vitamin C serum. It’s one of the few ingredients proven to protect against free radical damage, even skin tone, and promote collagen production.

Is Clinical Active Peel System

When I could see Candace Marino aka The LA Facialist in person, I would get the iS Clinical Fire + Ice facial but since we’re on the second phase of lockdown in LA, this at-home kit will have to do. This kit provides enough product to give you two professional-grade treatments at home which is great value.

The Best Skincare Products for Exfoliation

Cosmedix Pure Enzymes Mask

There really is no other mask quite like pure enzymes. You definitely feel the tingle with this one (which I love) as the fruit enzymes are working their magic and you will feel a little red post-application but that’s what you want. The flush of oxygenated blood to the skin will boost circulation and collagen production. This mask is gentle enough to be done once a week.

Renée Rouleau Triple Berry Smoothing Peel

This one is another favorite with beauty editors and celebrities with good reason. It’s packed with five skin smoothing fruit AHAs, BHAs, and enzymes to clear blemishes and clogged pores, fade post-breakout marks, lift discoloration, and stimulate cellular renewal. Plus, it’s just a really fun mask to apply because of the bright pink berry color!

Cosmedix Refine Refinishing Treatment

I have been using retinol for years now and swear by it for anti-aging and overall skin health and maintenance. What I love about the Cosmedix line is their range of retinol that start low so you can work your way up as your skin adjusts. I asked the education director for Cosmedix, Ryan Christopher to explain and he told me that Serum 16 and Serum 24 are the starters and are great for sensitive skin. If you have textured skin then you can move to Define which also includes lactic acid to exfoliate. Refine, Refine Plus, and Refine RX follow each other in strength with RX being the highest. Genius.

The Best Skincare Products for Moisturizing

Matter of Fact Maximalist Age-Defying Moisturizer

Thankfully, younger generations are more attuned to the importance of SPF—but I get it, if you didn’t grow up in Australia like I did, you were probably encouraged to soak up as much sun as possible. This moisturizer is a go-to for undoing the damage of photo-aging. It combines a peptide and hyaluronic acid blend with heavy-hitting ingredients like niacinamide and bakuchiol to keep skin protected against environmental stressors and improve skin tone.

Cosmedix Mystic Moisturiser

Choosing a moisturizer can be tricky, especially when you’re looking for something rich that doesn’t clog your pores. This is hands down the best one I’ve come across for mature skin. It’s super hydrating and targets the concerns you want to address at this age like fine lines and wrinkles. I have combination skin but hydration is my number one goal with skincare and this definitely does the job. I can’t recommend this enough.

iS Clinical Moisturizing Complex

This is a great option for the summer months when you’re looking for something lighter. I usually mix this (and the X-Age) with oil for extra hydration and to seal in moisture.

Furtuna Skin Biphase Moisturizing Oil

I have tried so many oils and they’re either too fragrant or too heavy and they sit on top of the skin. This oil from Furturna is neither of those things. It has a super subtle fragrance and its lightweight formula sinks immediately into my skin giving an instant luminous glow while protecting my skin from the harsh dry LA air. I have been through three bottles of this already and I can’t get enough. It’s just a really beautiful product.

Mara Chlorella + Reishi Sea Vitamin C Serum

Okay, so this is technically a vitamin C serum but it’s an oil-based version so I put it in the moisturize category because I LOVE mixing it with my moisturizer. It ticks all the boxes for me: lightweight, mild scent, clean formula, and packed with potent ingredients—we’re talking 14 vitamin C rich fruit extracts, herbs and botanicals to help improve skin brightness.

Cosmedix Elite Eye Doctor High Potency Eye Treatment

I started out using the hero product in the Cosmedix line, Opti Crystal also known as unicorn tears but quickly moved onto Eye Doctor after learning it contains retinol and alpha-lipoic acid. I wasn’t a huge fan of eye cream until I met this product but what I love is that it also doubles as a highlighter thanks to their special liquid crystal. Try it, I guarantee you’ll love it.

HydroSerum Eye Stick

I love the easy application of this moisturizing eye stick. Simply glide on a thin layer for a healthy dose of hyaluronic acid, argan oil, niacinamide, and licorice root extract to smooth fine lines and illuminate the skin. Trust: your under-eyes will appear brighter and feel revived immediately.

The Best Skincare Products for Protection

iS Clinical Extreme Protect SPF 30

Now to my favorite product: sunscreen. I am at the esthetician level of an obsession now for this amazing product. As an Aussie, I have literally had 100s of sunscreens applied to my face and body and there are a lot of bad ones out there. This one is the best I’ve tried. It’s light, leaves a dewy glow without being sticky or oily, and it doesn’t smell like sunscreen!

I am the biggest preacher of sunscreen application (I’m talking every day, and reapplying multiple times a day) so if this one doesn’t suit you, please, please, please find one that does and wear it every day, even inside because this one also protects you from the blue light of your phone and computer screen.

SilkScreen Sheer Tint Mineral Sunscreen

I also love a tinted sunscreen, but it can be hard to find one that isn’t streaky or heavy. Thankfully, this sheer mineral sunscreen by Agency pairs a weightless application with SPF 50 protection. And because Agency is dedicated to providing customized skincare for everyone, this is my favorite sun-protection pick for all skin types. Simply swipe it on for even, poreless skin.

The Best Skincare Products for Hydration

Matter of Fact Minimalist Hydrating Moisturizer

When it comes to hydration, a lightweight formulation is key. Yes, you want to feel that it’s working, but a gloppy texture isn’t ideal. And where sensitive skin is concerned, Matter of Fact’s hydrating moisturizer is the best in the game. The liquid crystal lipids not only provide hydration, but they also support your skin barrier—key when you’re playing the skin health long game.

City Beauty Line-Smoothing HydroMask

Something about doing a face mask feels so luxe. Not only do you get the results of an in-office treatment at home, but the process of applying one to your skin is self-care at its finest. And when the mask actually works? *Chef’s kiss* Infused with antioxidants, peptides (key for promoting collagen production), and hyaluronic acid for deeply hydrated skin, you’ll notice a complete transformation after just 20 minutes.

Cosmedix Mystic Hydrating Treatment

This isn’t essential by any means but since I love any hydration when I can get it throughout the day, I love a face mist. I find my skin will dry out after I’ve stared at a computer screen for a few hours so I love to spritz in between to keep my skin fresh. This one is an exfoliating formula so it also helps current breakouts and helps to prevent new ones.

iS Clinical Copper Firming Mist

I always keep a few mists handy on my desk so I can reach for whatever I feel like my skin needs. This copper firming mist smells great and is just the right amount of hydration when you need it.

Biologique Recherche Masque VIP O2

If you haven’t tried this French skincare line yet then I highly recommend their masks. I like to multi-mask with the vivant so I’m hydrating while I’m targeting my t-zones. It’s not cheap but you don’t need much and it’s safe enough to use daily or weekly, whenever you like to mask. If you want a more affordable option, try the Cosmedix Restore.

Biologique Recherche Masque Vivant

I’ll just be straight up on, this mask doesn’t smell great. In fact, it smells like vegemite (if you know, you know!) but it’s such a great mask for treating dull, tired, or oily skin. I love it on the weekends when my skin is needing a boost or it’s a great hangover cure!

The Things We Do Liquid Lift Sleeping Mask

Vanessa Lee, RN is renowned in California for her incredible natural cosmetic procedures—her threads are the best but sadly she isn’t taking on new clients. But luckily for us, she has designed a product line to give us the in-clinic results at home. Her sleeping mask is one of my favorites. I love the jelly-like formula that is super hydrating thanks to organic oats, Vitamin B5, and hyaluronic acid. It’s great post-treatment or chemical peel too.

City Beauty City Lips Night Oil

Niche, but when it comes to the best skincare products for your 40s, a plumping, overnight lip oil is essential. Simply apply a swipe of this hydrating, exfoliating formula before going to sleep and get ready to wake up to noticeably plumper lips. I’m obsessed with this ingredient list: portulaca pilosa extract rejuvenates the skin while plankton and floral extract provide a smoothing effect. And of course, hyaluronic acid delivers all the hydration your lips could dream of. Seriously, this is a perfect overnight lip treatment. (Eat your heart out, Laneige.)

There’s so much to embrace about the warm weather season ahead. Al fresco dining, backyard gardening, and plenty of sun-soaked days. But of course, with the opportunity to ditch our winter layers comes plenty of toxic messaging. Hello… “summer body.” Thankfully, in the era of increased neutrality, a summer body depends on nothing more than existing in the months between May and August. It’s freeing to align your routine to your changing needs instead of trying to change your body for the seasons. With that approach in mind, my summer prep looks like resetting my skincare routine, turning over my wardrobe, prioritizing beauty sleep, and upping my body care rituals to address common causes of dry, flaky skin.

Understanding Dry, Flaky Skin Causes

In the summer, I swap out my winter skincare for a more streamlined routine. Think: lightweight face oils and makeup multi-sticks in lieu of heavier moisturizers. But whatever time I save in paring back these steps goes straight to my body. Of course, when the sun’s out, I show more of my skin. So I try to stop common dry, flaky skin at the root by being diligent with my body care routine.

But as with any element of beauty, you don’t know what you don’t know. To get a clear handle on exactly what my body care routine needs, I went to the experts for answers.

“The body often gets neglected,” says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Deanne Mraz. “We tend to seek out and splurge on facial skincare, but there is now a growing awareness that many of the same active ingredients will benefit the body (and scalp!).”

Read on to understand the causes of dry, flaky skin—as well as common mistakes to avoid if you have genetic concerns or skin conditions like psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, or just too much sun exposure. Our experts also recommended some steps to add to your body care routine. Start now for smooth, hydrated skin all summer and beyond.

Meet the Experts

Deanne Mraz, MD,  FAAD. President and Founder, DMR Research, President and Co-Founder, Modern Dermatology, and Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology, Yale New Haven Hospital

Anar Mikailov, MD, FAAD. Board-Certified Dermatologist, Co-Founder of Skintensive, and Co-Author of Fitzpatrick’s Color Atlas and Synopsis of Clinical Dermatology, 9th Edition

Woman serving food outside.

Dry Skin Symptoms

Mraz: Dry, flaky skin can be triggered by our environment (cold, dry weather), sun damage, over-bathing, sensitization from an allergic reaction, or injury to the skin. Anything that compromises the skin barrier can lead to dry, dehydrated skin that flakes.

Mikailov: Various factors include:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Hormone status
  • External factors, such as products or environment (ambient humidity level and temperature)
  • Pregnancy
  • Perimenopause and menopause
  • Maturing skin

How does the skin on our face differ from that on our body?

Mraz: Skin needs vary by body part. Some of this is based on how much skin is exposed to the environment, and other times, it has to do with its structural makeup. For example, because the face is almost always exposed to the environment, it suffers more wear and tear from UV and weather exposure.

Mikailov: The skin on the face is thinner and more delicate than that on the rest of the body. The pores are also smaller, but sebaceous glands are more abundant on the face. Generally, the skin on the face should be treated more gently and delicately.

Woman using body lotion

What skin types are more prone to dryness?

Mraz: As we age, our skin becomes more vulnerable to dryness. This is largely due to hormonal fluctuations that impact the amount of sebum our skin produces naturally. Skin prone to irritation or conditions like eczema is typically dryer. Some medical conditions are linked to dry skin, such as thyroid disease and anemia.

Mikailov: It’s a myth that all bumps on the skin are acne and can be treated with the same products and ingredients as facial acne. However, some bumps may be due to fungal acne, folliculitis, or any other infections that cause skin bumps. Sometimes, it’s best to see a board-certified dermatologist.

How to Address Common Causes of Dry, Flaky Skin

Mraz: Avoid long, hot showers, which dehydrate the skin and compromise the skin barrier. Also, avoid products with fragrance (or even anything that’s artificially fragrance-free) and alcohol, which can trigger dry skin and lead to irritation and eczema flare-ups.

Mikailov: After showers (ideally within three minutes), apply a rich moisturizer filled with plant-based ingredients that help maintain the skin barrier. Think plant oils and butters like coconut, jojoba, shea butter, squalane, and ceramides. Avoid harsh, strong soaps. Lukewarm water is much better than hot water, which can strip the skin of its natural oils.

For those who shower in the mornings, consider wearing compression socks after applying moisturizer and before heading to work. This is especially important for professionals on their feet! Compression socks are an excellent prevention approach to maintaining optimal vein health and preventing varicose veins. And for exposed parts of the body, don’t forget to apply sunscreen with an adequate SPF.

Best Ingredients for Extremely Dry Skin

Mikailov: Look for emollients that increase skin hydration, repair the skin barrier, and reduce Transepidermal Water Loss (TEWL). I prefer plant-based oils and butters like coconut oil and jojoba oil over mineral oil as they mimic the skin’s natural oils.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of my favorites for the body—especially in infants and kids because it has been studied extensively in individuals with eczema. This natural plant-based oil has what I call “miracle” properties, including excellent moisture restoration (emollient properties) and moisture loss prevention (occlusive properties).

In addition to excellent emollient and occlusive properties, coconut oil is primarily made of lauric acid, a fatty acid that naturally lowers the bacterial burden of Staphylococcus aureus (SA). This bacteria is found in 60-100% of individuals with eczema, and a high bacterial burden is associated with poor eczema control.

Organic coconut oil is always an ingredient I recommend for my patients but it is challenging to find a product that is not too oily or greasy. KP Away Lipid Repair Emollient is one of few products on the market with under 10 ingredients that uses coconut oil and is fast-absorbing. Use twice daily, ensuring one of these applications is within three minutes after showering.

Squalane

This oil was created to replicate the squalene our body naturally produces. Squalene is secreted by our sebaceous glands to hydrate and protect our skin.

Ceramides

Ceramides are fatty acids found in abundance in all layers of our skin. Ceramides act as glue between skin cells and create a barrier to prevent allergens or toxic substances from penetrating the skin. One of the most critical parts of preventing eczema flares is replenishing this natural ceramide-based defense system. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream is a classic product with ceramides.

Sea Buckthorn

This is a plant-derived oil with incredible anti-inflammatory properties. When combined with other moisturizing factors, this oil has been found in multiple studies to help alleviate atopic dermatitis.

The Best Moisturizing Body Care Routine for Dry Skin

Sometimes, a tub of Vaseline cannot be beat. But there’s joy in crafting an extensive, elevated body care routine. Think of it as the Goldilocks ritual for dry, flaky skin—and the experts approve.

“Start by regularly exfoliating the skin on your body. This helps to move along dead skin cells and allows the products you apply afterward to penetrate more effectively,” says Dr Mraz. “I like dry-brushing before you hop in the shower for this or using a gentle, fine-particle scrub in the shower.

“For hydration and skin barrier repair, seek out humectants like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and urea and emollients like ceramides, lanolin, and squalane. You can then add an occlusive layer, such as Vaseline or Aquaphor, on dry, scaly patches or areas like the elbows and knees. This helps seal the moisture you’ve applied underneath. It also acts as a protective barrier between the skin and the outside world while it heals.”

As I write this, I can feel the effects of prolonged, poor sleep. Once every few months, everything converges upon me at once, and, despite my best-laid plans, I end up sacrificing sleep for a few days —or even weeks. Whether you have a hectic family, career obligations, or the Sunday scaries are keeping you awake, you know that poor sleep is impossible to hide. “You look tired,” is devastating to hear. And while some days there’s nothing for it but heroic amounts of concealer (shoutout to the concealers that cover without caking), the best solution is a solid beauty sleep routine.

From simple fixes like sleeping on your back to TikTok hacks like mouth taping, many small things might can improve your sleep. Sleeping deeper, breathing easier, and waking up with glowier skin is all possible by tailoring your sleep routine to your goals.

While overall sleep hygiene is important, I wouldn’t be a beauty editor if I wasn’t curious about maximizing the beauty part of beauty sleep. As I embark on my mission to reset my sleep routine, I spoke to some experts about the things we can do to maximize our beauty sleep routine. And yes, reap all the benefits.

What Your (Lack Of) Sleep Is Really Doing to Your Skin

Sleep, above all, is about repair. When you sleep, your body gets to work resetting—and one thing about me: I love a good reset. This precious time for your body earned its moniker “beauty sleep” because, as your body’s largest organ, your skin goes through a transformation during. It’s why the cardinal sin of skincare is sleeping in your makeup. And it’s why a nighttime skincare routine is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your skin health. So, at a bare minimum, make sure to wash your face and apply an overnight moisturizer

Your skin soaks up the nourishing products you apply at night and produces natural oils. At a minimum, you should cleanse your skin and apply your moisturizer.  Your skin is also busy repairing damage, receiving nutrients from your blood, and rejuvenating itself for the morning.

But slugging and retinol are not the only things you can do to help transform your complexion overnight. From lymphatic drainage before bed to infrared therapy, our experts recommend some possible additions to your sleep routine. Read on to discover how to optimize your beauty sleep to wake up looking refreshed. And remember: take what you need and leave what you don’t.

Gabriel A. Sher: Chief of Acupuncture and TCM Development at ORA

Dr. Claudia Aguire: PHD + Neuroscientist

Woman making bed.

Is beauty sleep a real thing?

According to Beverly Hills Oculoplastic Surgeon, Dr. Kami Parsa: “Not getting enough sleep can affect various aspects of your appearance, including your skin, eyes, and overall facial expression, making you look tired and less refreshed.”

Dr. Parsa explains that, if you’re not getting enough sleep, you might notice:

  • Dark Circles and Puffiness. When you don’t get enough sleep, blood vessels under the eyes can dilate, causing dark circles to become more prominent. Additionally, fluid can accumulate under the eyes, leading to puffiness and a “tired” look.
  • Paleness. Sleep deprivation can reduce blood flow to the skin, making it appear paler and less vibrant.
  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles. Chronic lack of sleep can reduce collagen production, resulting in the premature formation of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Bloodshot Eyes. Sleep deprivation may also lead to red or bloodshot eyes, which can be caused by irritation, dryness, or inflammation of the blood vessels in the eyes.
  • Dull Skin. The skin’s natural rejuvenation and repair processes occur during deep sleep, so insufficient sleep can make the skin appear dull and lackluster.
  • Facial Expression. Tiredness can lead to drooping eyelids, sagging mouth corners, and an overall less alert and lively appearance.
  • Increased Stress. Lack of sleep can elevate stress levels, releasing stress hormones like cortisol. These hormones can negatively impact the skin’s health and appearance.
  • Poor Skin Health. When you consistently lack sleep, your skin doesn’t have enough time to repair itself and maintain its natural glow.

The Benefits of Quality Sleep

Getting a good night’s sleep is one way to approach beauty holistically. It’s not just about skincare, according to Gabriel A. Sher, Chief of Acupuncture and TCM Development at ORA—it’s about wellness.

“Our bodies restore different organs at specific times during the night. To provide proper nourishment and restoration, we need to be in a deep sleep.

Ahead, Sher explains how sleep impacts our skin and overall well-being.

Sleep is our time to reestablish balance. In Chinese medicine we think of the day as yang—our energy is strong, and we are very active and doing work. At night, we are in a yin stage which is more internal regrouping and getting our bodies to turn inward. Sleep is essential as it helps our body reestablish equilibrium from the day. If we don’t have yin we don’t have yang.

If you don’t sleep, the body doesn’t have time to recover, which disturbs our shen (spirit or presence). I know from having little children and not getting regular sleep my emotional, physical, and internal state was in chaos. If you don’t let me sleep, my body will become chaotic, and my heart will be in complete upheaval. This is seen in the quality of your skin and physical glow.

In Chinese medicine, we must care for the internal and external body. Emotions, diet, sleep—these all affect the body. When our bodies are not balanced, we see physical and emotional symptoms get much worse.

Daily Habits for Better Sleep

  • Keeping a consistent sleep schedule and getting up and going to bed at the same time can help your body intuitively know when it’s time for rest.
  • Creating a healthy, calming bedtime ritual is super important. We all know the basic concepts: stay away from your phone, don’t drink fluids too late, and don’t have stressful conversations before bed.
  • If you have a lot on your mind, write your thoughts down so that your mind has time to rest.
  • Practicing meditation or breathwork can be very effective at calming the mind. I like to incorporate essential oils, like the Campo Sleep oil during my meditation or breathwork as well.
  • After dinner, before it gets too close to bedtime, I also like to have a cup of ORA’s Calming Chai herbal tea to help my mind and body relax.
  • Pairing this with a warm foot soak infused with calming bath salts is amazing on those nights when you’re feeling overstimulated.

Nighttime Routines for Better Beauty Sleep

“Suboptimal sleep can look like many things,” says Dr. Claudia Aguire. “Getting less than seven hours or more than nine hours, waking in the middle of the night, not getting enough early morning dreaming, all of this can be considered suboptimal. So tidying up our sleep hygiene is key to optimal health.

“In addition to dark circles and puffy eyes as the first signs of sleep deprivation, skin hydration, skin barrier function, and skin elasticity are also decreased by sleep deprivation.”

But what does a good sleep routine look like? “For me, it means listening to what your body needs and creating routines to adhere to, so you always have time slotted for self-care.”

Dr. Aguire recommends the following evening habits to optimize your beauty sleep.

  • Wind it down. In the evening, do more relaxing activities and get your room in the mood for sleep. Having a relaxation routine like taking a warm bath, spraying your pillows with lavender scent, or reading a book by a warm-toned light (no bright white LEDs) can set the scene for sleep onset.
  • Stay cool. Providing the optimal room temperature is a key component of healthy sleep hygiene. The National Sleep Foundation suggests that the ideal temperature is between 60 and 67 degrees, a range that takes into account different age groups.
  • Stay dark. Use darkening curtains, shades or an eye mask to create enough darkness to bump up your natural melatonin.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink a little water as we lose skin hydration at night the most. Drop in a couple of Hilma sleep support if you want to ease into sleep.
  • Get comfy. Depending on the weather, use natural fabrics to either keep cool or stay warm in bed so you don’t wake unnecessarily.
  • Sound. Use low sound frequencies to get deeper sleep. The hypnotic tones can help you fall asleep.

More Ways to Optimize Your Beauty Sleep Routine

Try a Sleepy Girl Mocktail

Here’s a TikTok trend we can get behind. The sleepy girl mocktail is a blend of pure tart cherry juice, magnesium powder, and digestive soda like an OLIPOP. The natural melatonin and L-theanine from the cherry juice combine with the digestive powers of OLIPOP for a yummy and beautifying treat. Choose a magnesium powder that gives you glowy skin when you wake up.

Take a Sleep Supplement

Sleep supplements aren’t just for getting you to sleep. The most effective options work while you’re resting to maximize your beauty sleep with nourishing ingredients and even help debloat or hydrate as you rest.

Use a Humidifier

A humidifier combines wellness and beauty benefits. It can relieve congestion, ease allergies, and stop snoring. It also keeps your skin moisturized to prevent excess dryness as you sleep.

Do a Hair Mask

Make the most of your nighttime routine by letting a hair mask sit in your strands overnight. Choose a leave-in conditioner or a hair mask for a more intensive treatment. Or try hair oiling every other night for shinier, thicker locks.

Optimize Your Overnight Skincare

Slather on occlusive creams for slugging. Start a nightly sculpting ritual. Use a red light mask. Prepping your nighttime skincare routine to set you up for better sleep pays dividends while you rest.
