Petition to make front-facing phone cameras just a little worse. We’ve all done it: accidentally opening the camera app just to come face-to-face (literally) with every single one of our pores. If you find yourself asking: “Why are my pores so big?” you’re not the only one. Don’t worry, smoother skin is possible.

Pore size is determined by a mixture of genetics and lifestyle factors. This means there’s hope. Depending on your skin type, age, and just how big your pores are (not just how they look in a phone camera or magnifying makeup mirror), a combination of skincare and in-office treatments really can shrink your pores. Still, there are more than a few myths to be aware of.

I looked to the experts for answers. Dr. Jennifer D. Holman, MD, FAAD is a board-certified dermatologist based in East Texas and Mona Seresht, MSPAS, PA-C is a certified physician assistant at Facile. Ahead, the two separate fact from fiction, addressing pore myths and sharing skincare routines to achieve smoother skin.

Why are my pores so big?

At some point in our skincare journeys, we learn to accept the things we can’t change (like the fact that we have pores in the first place). You might wish you could shrink your pores until they disappear, but Seresht notes that understanding—and working with—your pores is key. From there, you can learn to manage various skin conditions, “developing effective skincare routines that promote healthy skin.”

She continues. “[Pores] play essential roles in regulating body temperature by allowing sweat to surface and cool the body. Additionally, pores release sebum, an oily substance that moisturizes and protects the skin.”

Finding out your skin type can provide clues as to how much of your pore size is genetic and how much is caused by external factors. “Just like your skin color is genetic, your skin type, including your pore size, is genetic as well,” says Dr. Holman. “Typically, people with oilier skin who produce more sebum have larger pores. Hormonal factors can also cause you to produce more sebum, and in addition to acne, you can see enlarged pores.”

Another unavoidable factor? Age. While much of our lives get richer and more full as we age, our skin only ages as well as we treat it. “Age gets all of us,” says Dr. Holman. “We lose collagen and elastin as we age and pores become more visible.”

What Causes Large Pores

You’re not just stuck with the pores you’re doled out at birth. How you spend your days also contributes to the appearance of your pores. Some, like your skincare routine, are changeable. Others, like sun exposure, are inevitable—but that doesn’t mean you’re doomed.

Common causes of large pores are sun damage and excessive sebum. “Pores can enlarge when they become congested with debris like dirt, oils, and dead skin cells,” says Seresht. “Excessive sebum production can further stretch and accentuate their appearance.”

Her suggestion? Make sure your skincare routine targets excess sebum. “Maintaining a consistent skincare regimen that includes gentle cleansing, exfoliation, and the use of noncomedogenic products is crucial for minimizing the appearance of enlarged pores and promoting clear, healthy skin.”

Like aging, sun damage impacts pores by breaking down collagen and elastin. “Sun damage causes elastin and collagen breakdown, which can lead to larger pores,” says Dr. Holman. If you need another sign to invest in a good sunscreen, this is it.

Why You May Notice Large Pores on Your Nose

Often, we see large pores on our noses because the sebaceous glands there are bigger. Many of us—guilty!—also find ourselves picking and squeezing at this area when we see blackheads appear. And if you’re trying to overcorrect with pore, you might just be making the problem worse.

The viral hack for large, clogged pores on your nose? French pharmacy favorite, La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5—or any other hydrating, barrier-protecting moisturizer. By hydrating your skin, you prevent excess sebum creation. Cicaplast hydrates and locks in moisture. Even if it’s too thick for you to use for slugging, slather it on your nose to shrink the appearance of your pores.

4 Myths About Large Pores

Myth #1: Pores can “open” and “close”

One of the most pervasive myths is that you need to open up your pores. “They do not have muscles or mechanisms for such movement,” says Seresht.

According to Dr. Holman, “Steaming or certain masks may temporarily enlarge pores. These things increase the penetration of certain products in the skin, but pores don’t actually open and close.”

Even these temporary solutions are not fixes, says Seresht. “Beliefs about steam opening pores or pore strips effectively removing debris are widespread but often oversimplified.” While these can temporarily enlarge pores to allow for decongesting your pores or more effective product use, they can also enlarge pores—so be careful.

Myth #2: Pores are filled with dirt

“A common myth about pores is that they are filled with dirt,” says Dr. Holman. “The black material you see inside pores (‘blackheads’ or open comedones) is sometimes oxidized skin proteins. Seeing pores or material inside pores is not because you are dirty or have poor hygiene.”

Myth #3: Sunshine will shrink your pores

“Another myth is that a good dose of sunshine will improve the appearance of your pores,” says Dr. Holman. “Sun damage actually breaks down collagen and elastin, leading to the appearance of larger pores.”

Myth #4: You can permanently change pore size

As much as certain buzzy beauty products want you to believe this, it’s a marketing misconception at best. “These myths highlight the importance of understanding pore function and adopting evidence-based skincare practices to maintain skin health effectively,” says Seresht.

Best In-Office Treatments for Minimizing Large Pores

While you can’t alter pore size permanently, in-office treatments can give you impressive results, fast. Seresht recommends consulting a dermatologist or esthetician to find the right treatment for your skin goals. “The best way to decide what fits your lifestyle, budget, and expectations is to consult with an experienced aesthetic provider.”

How do you know what to look for in a treatment or a practitioner? “Ask for before and after photos and what their experience is treating pore appearance,” she says. “And don’t go for substitutes—I tell patients not to waste their money on things that don’t work trying to save money. It’s better to save or finance the treatments that will actually give you results than throw money away.”

This all goes hand-in-hand with proper skin maintenance and at-home solutions. Your provider can give you tips for maintenance tailored to your skin. “Let the provider build you a plan for what to do in-office and what products to use at home to enhance your results.”

Lasers/Pulsed Light Devices

Lasers and other pulsed-light technology are among the most innovative technologies for non-invasive treatments. They’re often gentler on the skin, more effective than other treatments, and require minimal downtime.

For enlarged pores, Dr. Holman is a fan of the celeb-approved BBL HEROic and HALO laser. “The BBL improves the overall appearance of the skin with a focus on correction of reds and browns, and then the HALO steps in to reduce the appearance of pores,” she says. “It’s a novel technology that delivers both fractionated ablative and non-ablative wavelengths at the same time to synergistically improve pore appearance. There is minimal downtime with the real results my patients are looking for.”

Seresht is a fan of the CoolPeel CO2 laser. “The CoolPeel CO2 laser targets the skin to refine texture and minimize pore size,” she says. “These treatments are performed by skincare professionals and can be tailored to your skin type and specific concerns for optimal results.”

Microneedling and Chemical Peels

Microneedling gives your skin an instant boost while allowing serums (topical exosomes are the hot add-on right now) to penetrate deeper into the skin. “Microneedling stimulates collagen production, improving skin texture,” says Seresht.

While you may experience post-procedure redness for a few days, you’ll also be left with smoother skin and smaller-looking pores. Some people also add chemical peels for greater results. “Chemical peels help clear pores and enhance overall skin clarity.” Chemical peels can range from intense (requiring about a week of downtime) to “no-peel” peels like PRX treatments. These address complexion as well as texture and fine lines.

The Best Skincare Routine to Address Large Pores

Like everything, making a change starts with changing your habits. Your skincare routine is the most powerful tool in your arsenal to reduce the appearance of pores. Dr. Holman is a fan of keeping it simple: “The classic regimen is a morning antioxidant and sunscreen and an evening retinoid.”

Seresht recommends consistency. “To diminish pore visibility and enhance skin health, maintain a routine of regular cleansing, weekly exfoliation with chemical exfoliants, and use of retinoids.”

Balancing hydration and exfoliation is key, while also taking preventative measures to protect your collagen—because once it’s gone, it’s gone. “Consistent skincare, hydration, and sun protection help maintain skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of pores,” says Seresht. “Avoiding smoking, managing stress, and using the correct products for your skin type is essential for promoting healthy skin and achieving a smoother, clearer complexion.”

The Best Products to Address Enlarged Pores

Our experts recommend prioritizing the following ingredients in your routine to address enlarged pores and experience smoother skin.

 • Topical exosomes. Exosomes boost your skin’s healing process, triggering cells to repair damage and your skin to increase collagen and elasticity.
 • Retinol. Retinol can both unclog pores and shrink their size for smoothness.
 • Hyaluronic acid. Prevents excess sebum before it clogs pores.
 • Salicylic acid. The mighty pore-unclogger, salicylic acid is a BHA that sweeps debris.
 • Glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is an AHA that sloughs off dead skin and improves overall texture, shrinking pores and smoothing skin.
 • Mandelic acid. As an antibacterial acne fighter, this is the best ingredient for acne-prone skin and reducing sebum.
 • Citric acid. Citric acid evens skin tone and texture by exfoliating the upper layer of dead skin cells and shrinking pores.
 • Niacinamide. One of the best ingredients for complexion, niacinamide shrinks pores and improves skin elasticity while building up your skin barrier.
 • SPF 30 or above. Don’t forget to reapply!

Versed’s New Line Puts Hydration Front and Center—And Everything Is Under $15 https://camillestyles.com/beauty/versed-skincare/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/versed-skincare/#respond Tue, 30 Jul 2024 17:53:32 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=276116 Your best skin—on a budget.

The post Versed’s New Line Puts Hydration Front and Center—And Everything Is Under $15 appeared first on Camille Styles.

New skincare brands pop up on the daily. As an editor, my inbox is regularly flooded with pitch after pitch of buzzy brands touting formulations with the latest and greatest ingredients. Apparently, I’m always just a purchase away from taut, bouncy, and glowing skin. But in the wide and ever-expanding world of beauty buys, some brands stand this test of relevancy and efficacy. My all-time fave? Versed skincare.

Like many, the cult brand came onto my radar when it hit the Target shelves in the spring of 2019. Getting snatched up by the retail giant (and the site of many a Sunday well-spent) is a rite of passage for countless small brands. But getting our hands on non-toxic eye creams and cleansers all for under $25? I—and millennial/Gen-Z women everywhere—was thrilled. Clearly, the brand is worth the hype. We’ve been buying up Versed ever since.

Versed Skincare Review: The Hydration Trio

Now, Versed is dropping its biggest launch to date. The Hydration Trio highlights a hardworking cleanser, serum, and eye gel—all priced at under $15. For insights into the intention behind this line and the effective ingredients each product features, I spoke with Kerry Sullivan, Versed’s CEO. Be sure to scroll to the end where I share my honest review. You won’t believe the before and after.

Kerry Sullivan Versed CEO
Kerry Sullivan

Kerry Sullivan is the CEO of Los Angeles-based skincare brand Versed. She previously served as CMO at Dollar Shave Club and had also spent some 17 years in several executive roles at Johnson & Johnson, including as VP of Marketing and General Manager of Neutrogena. Kerry received her MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business and her BA from Georgetown University.

Many dermatologists support a pared-down, minimalist skincare routine. How do these three products fit into someone’s current routine?

Versed is all about centering on—and perfecting—the basics. “The Versed MO is to simplify skincare so you can solve your biggest skin concerns,” says Sullivan. While we love an hour-long, skincare-as-self-care sesh, time doesn’t always allow. When that’s the case, it’s important to lean on results-centric products—like the Hydration Trio—to ensure dewy skin.

But why the focus on hydration specifically? Sullivan is quick to note that hydration is a constant—no matter how someone’s skin may change and evolve. “It’s not just a lightweight moisturizer; it’s a fundamental part of our skincare. We’re firing all cylinders on that hydration with this trifecta of products. Comforting cleanser? Check. Powerhouse serum? Check. Lightweight, refreshing eye gel? Check.”

As for a hydration-based routine, Sullivan emphasizes a more is more approach, recommending that all three products be used together. To complete your daily, AM skincare ritual, top it off with a moisturizer and SPF.

Other brands put moisture—not hydration—front and center in their product lines. What is the difference? Where do each of these focus areas fit into an optimal skincare routine?

Sullivan defines the difference, noting that “hydrating ingredients attract water to the skin whereas moisturizing ingredients seal in moisture that’s already present in the skin.” However, while not interchangeable, hydrating ingredients can have moisturizing properties, with the opposite also being true.

If you’re coming to these products with dehydrated skin, “using a product like Water Rush [Intensive Hydrating Serum] that focuses on hydration will help replenish the water loss that’s causing your skin to look dull or feel tight.”

Though hydration is front and center with this line, the trio pairs well with Versed’s other moisturizing products. Sullivan recommends Skin Soak Moisture Cream, one of her favorites, “to seal in that water” keeping skin healthy and supple.

Aside from featuring clean ingredients and effective formulations, Versed is known for its commitment to accessible pricing. How were you able to set such competitive, compelling price points without sacrificing quality?

Having spent her career in skincare for over 25 years, Sullivan has an eye for formulations. As such, she’s proud to say that “Versed products stand toe-to-toe with products triple our cost.”

She cites several factors that play into this. First is their scaled roll-out through Target, where the brand launched within six months of its inception—and still finds itself today. Second is Versed’s commitment to stock componentry vs. spending on custom packaging. The latter of which, Sullivan notes, offers no end benefit to the consumer. Finally, Versed is formula-first in its focus—in contrast to other brands that market expensive ingredients without the added payoff.

During a time when inflation keeps our beauty budgets tight, it’s impressive to see a brand like Versed bring quality, non-toxic products to consumers for under $25. Can your go-to beauty brand say that?

Clearly, my before and after pictures above speak to the dewy, hydrating magic behind this trio of products. Ahead, discover my full review. Spoiler: I’m due for a restock soon—what can I say? The glow is truly addicting.

Soft Launch Gentle Hydrating Cleanser

My Review: I’ve always been picky with my cleansers. There’s nothing I hate more than the feeling of a cleanser that strips my skin, leaving it dry and tight. What’s more, I also double cleanse in the evening, starting with an oil-based cleanser (my favorite is from Nusa Holistick) to remove my top layer of makeup. After that, I want a cleanser that brightens and hydrates the skin before applying my serum. Thanks to the Soft Launch’s hyaluronic acid, my skin appears noticeably plumper and smoother after use. It’s squeaky clean without that too clean feeling—IYKYK.

Highlights: A low-lather cleanser that gently but effectively cleans the skin without drying it.

Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic Acid, Pro Vitamin-B5, Green Tea Extract, and Aloe Leaf Juice

Versed Hydrating Trio

Water Rush Hydrating Eye Gel

My Review: I’ve long been an eye cream skeptic. Why should I be shelling out $50+ for something that seems to do little beyond moisturizing my under-eye area? (Even after using some of the most notoriously expensive creams, the dark bags persist.) Well, that was all for naught, because $12.99 is all it takes to brighten and hydrate this delicate area—and fend off any sign of wrinkles. I love that this product feels like a cream/water-based gel hybrid. It doesn’t go on too thick while still flooding the skin with hydration (key for softening fine lines). I apply a few small dots around my eye area both in the morning and evening. Whereas I’m overly cautious not to use too much of the more expensive creams, I have no qualms about picking up a new tube of this on my next Target run.

Highlights: Travel-friendly and hydrating, this under-eye treatment blends the lightweight feel of a water-based gel with the intense moisturization of a cream. The best part? It pairs perfectly under makeup, with zero creasing.

Key Ingredients: Five types of Hyaluronic Acid, Pro-Vitamin B5, Green Tea Extract, and Aloe Leaf Juice

Water Rush Intensive Hydrating Serum

My Review: I’m a serum junkie, through and through. (All the money I save on refusing to buy expensive eye creams, I spend on luxurious serums.) But once again, Versed is doling out effective formulations with my beauty budget in mind. Though the most expensive product of this hydrating trio, the Water Rush Intensive Hydrating Serum floods the skin with a combination of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds (I’m currently obsessed with Aloe Leaf Juice for that very reason). The result is hydration that deeply penetrates the skin, strengthening the skin barrier and keeping hydration locked in. I’m mindful to use this on my neck and chest as well. Those often show the first signs of aging and can benefit from a rush of hydration as well.

Highlights: A lightweight, non-sticky hydrating serum (in a travel-friendly, airless pump) that pairs perfectly as a final step before your favorite moisturizer.

Key Ingredients: Pro-Vitamin B5, Green Tea Extract, and Aloe Leaf Juice

I Was Anti-Denim Shorts Until Now—These 10 Pairs Changed My Mind https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-denim-shorts/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-denim-shorts/#respond Wed, 17 Jul 2024 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=274945 The perfect short does exist.

The post I Was Anti-Denim Shorts Until Now—These 10 Pairs Changed My Mind appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
Denim shorts have been a wardrobe staple for decades, evolving from Daisy Duke’s iconic cut-offs to today’s trendy high-waisted mom shorts. But finding the perfect pair? There’s nothing short about that mission.

I’ll admit, I’ve long been skeptical of denim shorts. They never seemed comfortable or flattering to me, and I often opted for poplin shorts or full-length jeans instead. But recognizing their enduring popularity and versatility, I decided to give them another chance. After scouring the internet for the best denim shorts, I’ve had a change of heart. Spoiler alert: the perfect pair has completely transformed my opinion.

Join us as we unpack just what constitutes the perfect pair of denim shorts—because let’s face it, when you find “the one,” it’s like slipping into a second skin that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and utterly chic.

What to Consider When Finding the Best Denim Shorts

Finding the best denim shorts is a personal journey. As with any type of clothing, these are not one-size-fits-all. The denim shorts that your best friend raves about might not be right for you, and vice-versa. Don’t be afraid to try on multiple styles and trust your instincts. When you find the right pair, you’ll know—but here are some factors to consider when shopping.

 • Length Options. From micro-shorts to Bermudas, the length of your shorts can dramatically change your look. Consider where you’ll be wearing denim shorts and what you feel most comfortable in.
 • Rise. The rise of your shorts—low, mid, or high—can make a big difference in both comfort and style. A higher rise tends to be more flattering and versatile, while a low rise can be more relaxed and comfortable.
 • Wash and Color. While classic blue denim is always a go-to, don’t be afraid to experiment with different washes and colors. A crisp white pair can be the perfect complement to a summer tan, while black denim shorts offer edgy versatility.
 • Distressing and Details. From subtle fading to rips and tears, the level of distressing on your shorts can take them from polished to lived-in. Consider your personal style and where you’ll wear them when deciding on the amount of distressing.
 • Comfort and Flexibility. The best pair of shorts are the ones you’ll want to wear. Look for a comfortable waistband that doesn’t dig in and consider stretch denim if you prioritize ease of movement.
 • Price Range. While it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, investing in a quality pair of denim shorts can pay off in the long run. They’ll last longer, fit better, and often become more comfortable with each wear.

The Best Denim Shorts, From Cut-Offs to Bermudas

After an extensive search involving numerous online orders and countless trips to the mall, I’ve curated a comprehensive list of the best denim shorts for women. This carefully selected collection covers a wide range of styles, from timeless cut-offs to contemporary boyfriend fits. Each pair has been personally tested and evaluated for comfort, style, and versatility.

So, let’s dive into the ultimate guide to the best denim shorts available today. Whether you prefer a classic look or something more on-trend, I’m confident you’ll find your perfect pair.

Best Overall Denim Shorts: Citizens of Humanity Marlow Vintage Short

Best Overall Denim Shorts: Citizens of Humanity Marlow Vintage Short

When I close my eyes and envision what denim shorts should look and feel like, I picture these exact shorts from Citizens of Humanity. Sitting right at the waist with a slight a-line silhouette, the Marlow Vintage Short is the perfect pair to kick-off your denim short journey. The denim isn’t stretchy, but it’s by far the softest of the bunch and is made from 100% regenerative cotton. I ordered my true size and they fit like a glove.

Best Affordable Shorts: Abrand Venice Short

Best Affordable Shorts: Abrand Venice Short

When researching the best denim shorts, I came across Abrand denim, and it might be my favorite brand discovery to date. I was pleasantly surprised by the fit and quality of these sub-$100 shorts, as in the past I’ve been burned by cheaper denim. With a classic fit, raw hem, and vintage blue wash, this is the perfect pair for anyone who’s still a bit skeptical of denim shorts. I sized up for a more relaxed fit.

Best Mom Shorts: Annabelle Long Vintage Relaxed Short

Best Mom Shorts: Annabelle Long Vintage Relaxed Short

For all of us who appreciate a full coverage denim short, the Annabelle Long Vintage pair from Citizens of Humanity are everything. Though you can find them in just about any wash you could want, I ordered the “Amaretto” wash and am obsessed with the dark, vintage wash. Extremely comfortable and soft, these run true to size and have just the right amount of give.

Best High-Waisted Shorts: AGOLDE Parker Long Short

Best High-Waisted Shorts: AGOLDE Parker Long Short

I’ve owned a pair of AGOLDE Parker denim shorts for years, and while they are still in great shape, I’ve been feeling like I’ve outgrown the short length. When I saw they offer the same style in a longer version, I immediately added the white colorway to cart. The loose-fitting, high-rise, vintage vibe is exactly what I’m looking for in the best denim shorts. Plus, AGOLDE runs a bit large, and it always feels great to order my smaller denim size, IYKYK!

Best Boyfriend Shorts: Reformation Raye Mid Rise Relaxed Jean Shorts

Best Boyfriend Shorts: Reformation Raye Mid Rise Relaxed Jean Shorts

If there was a category for most surprising denim shorts, this boyfriend pair from Reformation would take the gold. The second I tried these shorts on, I immediately fell in love with the flattering, effortless look, but was sold on the top-tier comfort. I sized up thinking that I’d need more room throughout the leg, but wish I got my true size instead—they’re naturally baggy! Although less versatile than classic denim shorts, I think these might be my favorite pair that I tried.

Best Statement Shorts: Source Unknown Flared Denim Shorts

Best Statement Shorts: Source Unknown Flared Denim Shorts

Statement pieces are rarely affordable, but these Source Unknown shorts are without a doubt both. Almost a cross between a skirt and shorts, these flared, A-line denim shorts are the perfect pair to style up and get creative with. Girly girls everywhere need these in their closets because I’ve never felt cuter. These are on preorder in most colors, but I guarantee they are worth the wait.

Best Cut-Off Shorts: Levi’s 501 Original Short

Best Cut-Off Shorts: Levi’s 501 Original Short

When ordering denim online, I always recommend sticking with brands that you know you can trust for fit and quality. If you’re looking for classic, distressed cut-offs that elongate your legs, look no further than these Levi’s 501 shorts. They’re on the shorter side, but I appreciate that the back has no distressing, providing ample coverage. These have a mid-rise fit and run a bit small. I sized up for some extra room and length, and they ended up fitting just right.

Best Bermuda Shorts: Rolla’s Super Mirage Short

Best Bermuda Shorts: Rolla’s Super Mirage Short

Bermuda shorts tend to polarize opinions, and these Rolla’s shorts have transitioned me from a hater to a lover. The super high-rise with the super loose leg creates the most flattering shape on my body and definitely looks high fashion. While I loved them styled with a tight tank and ballet flats, I think these shorts would look adorable dressed up with a heel. I recommend ordering your true size or smaller to maintain that snatched-waist look.

Madewell Denim Emmett Short: Patch Pocket Edition

Perhaps the classiest denim shorts I’ve ever seen, these fitted A-line shorts have a high rise with front patch pockets. Even paired with a simple white t-shirt, these dark wash denim shorts are a stand-out.

Gap 4″ Low Rise Stride Denim Shorts

Low-rise and loose, these affordable denim shorts are an excellent choice for those that put comfort first. Like all of the best denim shorts, these just get better with wear.

All your beauty questions—answered. Our resident dermatologist, Dr. Geddes Bruce breaks down the biggest topics in beauty, from hair loss to Botox and everything in between. Send us a DM @camillestyles with your own burning q’s and we may address it in a future column.

In the past few years, in-office procedures have become more accessible and less intimidating. Gone are the days when cosmetic procedures were whispered about in hushed tones. Today, we’re having open, honest conversations about what makes us feel good, inside and out. For many of us, that includes exploring the ever-evolving landscape of beauty treatments that can help us put our best face (and body) forward. Enter: tweakments.

This social media buzzword is broadly defined as quick, natural-looking procedures that have you in and out of the spa without any downtime. While it might seem like a new phenomenon, non-invasive beauty treatments have always offered a middle ground between embracing a natural look and making tweaks that help us feel like the best version of ourselves—especially during the summer, which we’re dubbing the season of self-care.

Featured image from our interview with Roti Brown by Michelle Nash.

If you’re looking for a pre-vacation glow-up or just want to feel your best this summer, look no further. However, with so many options out there, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. That’s why we’ve done the legwork for you. We’ve consulted our resident dermatologist to bring you the latest on the most popular and effective non-invasive procedures for summer.

Breaking Down the Best Non-Invasive Procedures for Summer

Q: I’m curious about cosmetic procedures, but I don’t know which ones are safe and effective. How do I find the right non-invasive treatment for me?

Non-invasive treatments should complement your daily skincare routine to address skin concerns, supercharge results, and make you feel your best. In the summer, every moment is precious and most of us want to maximize our time outside. With non-invasive treatments, you don’t have to sacrifice your summer for your skincare goals.

To demystify non-invasive procedures for a summer glow-up, we consulted Dr. Elizabeth Geddes-Bruce, who has plenty say on the subject.

Mary Ralph Bradley smiling sitting in chair.

“Summertime is a time for travel, outdoor BBQs, pool hangs, and beach waves. People don’t want to spend their summer hiding indoors, recovering. They want to be out and about and enjoying it. Also, there’s more ambient sunlight during summertime, and so the risks of developing hyperpigmentation after aggressive procedures increase,” says Dr. Geddes. “For that reason, we generally save our more intense procedures for the fall or winter and stick to noninvasive treatments in the summer. This is even more important for our patients with melanin-rich skin.”

Ahead, Dr. Geddes takes us through what to know about non-invasive treatments for summer and how to get the most out of your spa visits.

Dr. Elizabeth Geddes-Bruce

Dr. Geddes is a board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon at Westlake Dermatology, specializing in the practice of both cosmetic and medical dermatology. She views cosmetic dermatology as synergistic to a happy, healthy lifestyle and regularly counsels her patients in a balanced, natural approach to both cosmetic and medical dermatology.

First of all, what are tweakments?

“Tweakments is a term used on social media to describe a procedure that creates a small, natural change in appearance,” says Dr. Geddes. “It’s akin to saying a tiny adjustment or a little bit of editing. It refers more to the degree of change being not drastic. And that’s often accomplished with noninvasive procedures.”

Non-invasive procedures have been around longer than the term “treatments,” but both refer to small treatments that deliver a “you, but better” look without interfering too much with your routine.

Who might be a good candidate for non-invasive procedures?

If you’re curious if non-invasive treatments might be right for you, good news: they probably are. Take it from Dr. Geddes. “Anyone who is healthy and has an interest in maintaining or improving how they look and feel is a good candidate for a noninvasive procedure or tweakment. It’s all for fun and feeling good!”

Like any other aesthetic decision, the best way to be sure you’re doing the right thing for your aesthetic goals is to ask an expert. Speak to your dermatologist or schedule a consultation before taking the plunge. This will help you be sure you’re suitable for the treatment you want—or help you pick the right one for your goals.

“It’s not for everyone, and that’s OK,” says Dr. Geddes. “The best way to figure it out is to go in for a consultation with an expert, like a board-certified dermatologist with cosmetics training.”

What should we know before getting non-invasive procedures?

When it comes to getting non-invasive procedures for summer, less downtime also means less prep before your appointment. However, for some treatments, there is a little pre- and post-procedure care to be mindful of.

“Most procedures, even noninvasive ones, require a period of strict sun avoidance while healing. Generally, the less intense the treatment, the less downtime/need for sun avoidance.”

You might have to edit your daily skincare routine for a few weeks before your treatment to minimize risks. But other than opting out of AHAs and retinol for a while (which you might be doing anyway to protect your skin in the summer), the beauty of non-invasive treatments is often their universality and how quick you’ll be back to your routine afterward.

Some pre-procedure steps Dr. Geddes recommends:

 • Discontinue any potentially irritating topical agents (like retinoid creams) a few days before.
 • Tell your provider if you have a history of cold sores.
 • Don’t plan on trying any new treatment right before a big life event or trip. These procedures are still medical treatments with real risks and potential complications, even if they are noninvasive.

The Best Non-Invasive Procedures for Summer

From Botox to lasers, you might be seeking tweakments for smoother skin or even muscle tension. Dr. Geddes gave us the scoop on the most popular non-invasive treatments for summer, but she also says the best thing you can do this summer is enjoy it!

“Sometimes the best kind of glow-up comes from the inside. Spend quality time with friends and family. Laugh a lot. Make good memories. Eat fresh food. And get your body moving.”

Dr. Elizabeth Geddes-Bruce

Ahead, Dr. Geddes breaks down the best non-invasive procedures for summer. Read on to discover what options might be right for you.

Biostimulators

These are injectable products that are designed to improve skin quality and volume by stimulating collagen production. They are often delivered in a series of treatments to optimize effects.

 • Pros: By gradually stimulating collagen production, they can provide natural-looking and long-lasting results, restore volume, and improve skin texture over time.
 • Cons: Results from biostimulators take time to become visible, often requiring multiple sessions and several months before full effects are seen. Some individuals might experience temporary swelling or bruising.

Microneedling

This is a procedure that uses a device with numerous needles to penetrate the skin and stimulate wound healing. It’s quick and relatively painless and has very little downtime, making it a perfect summertime procedure.

I love the glow it gives, and it’s safe for all skin types. It should be avoided in people with active skin infections or moderate acne.

 • Pros: Microneedling boosts collagen production, improves skin texture, and reduces the appearance of scars and fine lines. It is minimally invasive with relatively quick recovery times.
 • Cons: Post-procedure redness and sensitivity are common, lasting a few days. Results can vary, and multiple sessions may be needed to achieve desired outcomes.

Superficial chemical peels

These are when a very light acid is applied evenly to the skin to cause peeling of the top layers. It can be done to help lighten discoloration, temporarily minimize the appearance of pores, and improve skin texture.

The exact peel used for your skin must be chosen by a skin expert to avoid complications. Stop all retinoids or irritating topical agents for at least five days before any peel. You will need to minimize sun exposure while healing, but this is usually only for a couple of days.

 • Pros: Superficial chemical peels gently exfoliate the skin, addressing minor skin imperfections and improving overall skin texture.
 • Cons: The effects of superficial chemical peels are often temporary and may require regular treatments to maintain results. Some individuals may experience mild irritation, redness, or flaking post-procedure.

(Some) lasers

Lasers such as the pulsed-dye laser (to target redness) and low powered, low density resurfacing ones (like Clear and Brilliant for dark spots) have minimal downtime and can be done safely in the summertime. These must be performed by an expert to avoid complications.

 • Pros: Laser treatments can effectively address a range of skin concerns, including pigmentation, wrinkles, and scars, with relatively quick recovery times. They offer precise and targeted treatment, leading to noticeable improvements.
 • Cons: Laser procedures can be costly, and the intensity of the treatment might cause discomfort during and after the procedure. There is also a risk of temporary redness, swelling, and hyperpigmentation, especially in those with darker skin tones.

The tides are changing, and there’s a shift in how the beauty industry—and society as a whole—talks about aging. Rather than forever trying to preserve our youth, we’ve collectively oriented our focus to embracing ourselves every step of the way. But in a world where anti-aging treatments—invasive and otherwise—are right at our fingertips, how do we make sense of the person it seems the world wants us to be? Answer: rituals and routines that make us feel our best—regardless of what anyone has to say about our wrinkles. And for me, retinol for sensitive has been an absolute godsend.

Sure, I’ve tried Botox and dermal fillers, and when administered properly, they can do wonders. But as much as I’ve loved the results, I’ve learned to lean into this graceful aging hero that’s a mainstay in derm-recommended skincare routines. Many experts I’ve spoken with consider retinol non-negotiable—and among editors, the much-hyped ingredient is often touted as a miracle worker.

Featured image from our interview with Sabeena Ladha by Suruchi Avasthi.

The Best Retinol for Sensitive Skin

But as magical as retinol can be, it’s not without its drawbacks. Striking the right balance with the powerful ingredient is crucial for achieving those glowy, optimal results. For a little skincare assistance, we tapped dermatologist, Dr. Nancy Samolitis—co-founder and medical director of FACILE dermatology + boutique—and esthetician, Matthew Miller—whose namesake salon is found in West Hollywood—to answer all our burning questions. From buffering for sensitive skin to the best retinol for every concern—it’s all right here.

What is retinol?

Retinol is a type of retinoid, a class of chemical compound derived from Vitamin A, which increases the production of collagen and promotes cell turnover. Simply put: retinol is a form of Vitamin A that’s available in over-the-counter skincare products.

How Retinol Works

One of retinol’s superpowers is the ingredient’s ability to speed up cell turnover, which keeps sluggish skin cells from becoming trapped in pores (which can cause inflammation), leading to brighter, fresher skin.

“Retinol’s anti-aging benefits are due to repair of cellular damage and normalization of the cells in the top layer of the skin,” Dr. Samolitis says. “When cells are turning over at a healthy rate, skin appears smooth and glowing instead of rough and dull.”

Is retinol safe to use on sensitive skin?

Ultimately, retinol is safe to use on all skin types. However, little adjustments—like starting slow or buffering your retinol—may be helpful for first-timers. “Retinol gets a bad rap for irritating sensitive skin,” Miller says. “While this can be true, it’s all about formulation. Prescription-strength Retin-A or tretinoin can be a little intense, which is why it’s very important to start slow.”

For more sensitive skin types, Miller recommends looking for Retinal/Retinaldehyde. This derivative usually offers amazing results while causing less irritation. “If you’re still nervous, you can start by buffering your retinol product by applying it after your moisturizer,” he advises.

Potential Side Effects

Though flaking is never pleasant, it’s important to remember that a little bit is completely normal when you begin using a product as strong as retinol. “Your skin needs to adjust to retinol,” Miller notes. “In the beginning, some may experience drying, flaking, and maybe some redness. This is temporary, but like previously stated, always start slow (one to three times a week) in the beginning.”

And I’m sure we’ve all heard of the dreaded retinol purge. Retinol can cause clogged pores and breakouts—proof that sometimes, your skin has to get worse before it gets better. For most people, this stage lasts anywhere from 2-4 weeks, but it depends on the strength and potency of your product.

How often should you use retinol?

As your skin adjusts, you can work up to using retinol daily, as long as you’re not seeing side effects. Of course, this depends on what kind of formulation of retinoid you’re using. The best plan of action is to adhere to what your esthetician or medical professional suggests. Also, be sure to only apply retinol products at night, and remember to wear plenty of sunscreen during the day.

Woman using sauna.

Are there areas where we should avoid using retinol?

The neck and chest area tend to be more prone to irritation when it comes to things like retinol or exfoliation, says Miller but those areas can still receive the ingredient. After applying retinol to your face, he recommends using any leftover product on your neck and chest to slowly introduce the ingredient. For the delicate skin under the eyes, look for formulations of retinol that have a lower potency and a moisturizing base.

Customer review: “I developed cystic acne in my early 20s that consisted of painful breakouts all over my face. I started using this last year and assumed it wouldn’t work (that month of purging is normal). My process: I used a CeraVe cleanser every morning, then applied this gel and continued with a moisturizer (CeraVe) afterwards as not destroy my skin barrier. It is now year later and my acne is GONE and I do not break out at all. This wasn’t a quick process for me and I did not notice immediate results, even 5 months in. I highly recommend this product and I hope it works for you the way it did for me, but have patience.”

With temps at their highest all year, keeping cool while looking styled can feel like a balancing act. Denim shorts and a white tee are go-to, warm-weather staples, but I need a little more in my rotation to keep me feeling inspired. Enter the best linen clothing. The effortless, European summer-coded fabric is light and breathable. And honestly? It’s all I want to wear.

The Best Linen Clothing to Elevate Your Wardrobe

I’m a firm believer that we should all be living in linen right now. To help you navigate the trending—but timeless!—fabric, I’ve rounded up this season’s best linen clothing.

From the perfect pair of white linen pants to statement dresses, every piece in the list below is guaranteed to make you feel your comfiest and coolest, while looking your best. And if you think linen is only a summer essential, think again. The best linen clothing can be paired with warm knits and denim during the transitional seasons, too! So, get ready to add-to-cart because the linen clothing your closet needs is all right here.

Camille Styles wearing linen top and denim shorts.

Best Linen Clothing: Tops

From vests to button-downs, linen tops are at the top of my wishlist. Pairing perfectly with denim, silks, or coordinating bottoms, a linen top is an elevated alternative to your favorite white tee or tank.

When shopping for linen tops, I look for something that’s a bit more fun and flirty for summer outings. However, most of these can also double as workwear. You can also never go wrong styling a white linen button-down unbuttoned over a white tank with a good pair of jeans. Throw on a sunhat and a pair of fun sandals and you have an effortlessly chic summer fit. Out of all of the best linen clothing, I recommend investing in a linen top (or two), as these can be easily layered depending on the time of year and styled with just about any bottom in your closet.

Linen-Blend Button-Back Cropped Tank Top

Your favorite white tank has competition. The button detailing on the back of this top is an added bonus for this elevated basic.

The Boxy Linen Shirt

I’m obsessed with this modern take on a traditional linen button-down. Not-your-boyfriend’s-vacation-shirt, this flattering, boxy top is a true closet staple.

Scout Linen Halter Top

If you’re looking for a more playful twist on a traditional linen vest, I’m loving this backless halter top. It feels sexy but still chic, and unique but still classic.

Emelia Black Linen Wrap Shirt

Bows are all the rage this year, and this linen wrap shirt is the perfect subtle way to incorporate the trend into your summer wardrobe.

FAITHFULL THE BRAND Antibes Top

There’s nothing more flattering than an open back, and I love that this linen tank has adjustable tie straps for a more customized fit. Plus, you just can’t beat this color (and the fact it has matching pants)!

Bess Linen Top

Reformation has chic and girly nailed down. This structured, feminine top is sure to turn heads everywhere from the office to out on the town.

100% Linen Boyfriend Shirt

This classic linen button-down is the key to easy dressing all summer. Throw it over a dress, a bikini, or a tank and you’re set.

Maxine Button-Back Top in Linen

We all know yellow is having a moment, and yellow linen is my favorite summer spin on the trend—specifically this button-back top.

Alessia White Linen Vest

If you know me, you know I’ve been wearing DISSH’s linen vests non-stop since last year. A tried-and-true classic, this (or one of their other vest styles) is my number one linen top recommendation.

Linen Tie Tank

I may be biased considering I had a hand in designing this one, but this tank is the ultimate hack for record-breaking heat. Plus, it has coordinating shorts, pants, and a skirt, so you can take your pick to match!

Woman wearing long linen skirt.

Best Linen Clothing: Bottoms

As someone who avoids denim shorts 99% of the year, finding summer pants, skirts, and shorts can prove to be a challenge. However, I started building my collection of the best linen clothing last summer. Now, these linen bottoms have become a no-brainer when getting dressed.

From DISSH’s coordinating skirts to J.Crew’s long and lean shorts, these bottoms will be the perfect pair to every top you own—linen or not. When shopping for linen bottoms, specifically white ones, be sure they aren’t see-through, and wear nude underwear regardless. (Skims is the best.)

Personally, I’ve been living in Reformation’s linen pants. They pass the sheer test, and they’re so easy to style that I’m tempted to wear them every day. (Don’t worry, I actively remind myself to give my other linen staples some love.) But of course, you can’t go wrong with any of the pieces on this list.

Olina Linen Pant

These are hands down the best linen pants I’ve tried. Both my mom and I grabbed a pair last time we were at Reformation and I’ve barely taken them off since! Pro tip: Nude underwear, always.

Clean Button-Tab Shorts in 100% Linen

Bury me in these shorts and a white t-shirt with “stylish, smart, and tasteful” inscribed on the tombstone. No one will know if it’s written about me, or these shorts.

365 High Rise Linen-Blend Shorts

A classic linen short silhouette, these affordable shorts from Gap will never go out of style—so cost-per-wear is essentially $0. (Girl math.)

Linen Skirt

Everyone needs a good mini skirt in their closet and I highly recommend this natural shade from Daily Drills. It goes with everything but pairs perfectly with the brand’s coordinating Tie Tank + linen vest.

Long Tropez Short in Linen

Long shorts are taking center stage this summer, and this linen pair from J.Crew is the perfect way to emulate influencers’ style with ease.

Von Cream Linen Skort

Skorts are one of the best things since sliced bread, and I’ve been eyeing this chic dual-tone linen skort from DISSH forever. Pairing perfectly with both white and black tops, I think it’s finally time I add to cart.

Andi Linen Skirt

This versatile skirt from Reformation can be buttoned up or down, depending on how big of a slit you want. And, mark my words, plaid is having a resurgence.

The Harlow Wide-Leg Pant in 100% Linen

These striped linen pants are the perfect statement pant to add to your wardrobe. Classic and timeless, yet still fun and funky. Proof that you can have it all.

Petra White Linen Midi Skirt

I’m in love with the detail on this linen midi skirt. For summer brides and those vacationing somewhere gorgeous, this one is for you.

Side Stripe Linen Pant

Deiji Studios is one of my favorite brands that I’ve discovered this year. These striped linen pants feel like pajamas but look like a million bucks.

Woman wearing linen short jumpsuit.

Best Linen Clothing: Dresses & Jumpsuits

Linen dresses or jumpsuits are the most obvious choice for an easy, (literally) breezy summer look. There’s nothing better than a one-and-done outfit that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and cool in the heat. Ideal for daytime cookouts, dinners al fresco, and even summer weddings, the best linen clothing can be dressed up or down with the right accessories.

I’ve been gravitating toward linen dresses every weekend. With a swap from a sneaker to a sandal, these looks can take me through my entire day. I’d style the below linen dresses and jumpsuits with a strappy sandal, a raffia bag, and a pearl necklace for a simple—never boring—look that’ll earn compliments everywhere you go.

Delia Linen Dress

Some of you may still be on the fence, but bubble dresses and bubble skirts are gaining major traction. This drop-waist mini dress is an excellent way to dip your toes into this trend.

Scalloped-Trim Shift Dress in Linen

Another butter yellow beauty, the scalloped detailing on this dress will earn you best-dressed points at any summer wedding.

Emi Linen Fit & Flare Midi Dress

Managing Editor, Isabelle can’t get enough of this dress. The fit is universally flattering, with a nipped-in waist and breathable linen for a classically feminine silhouette. She has it in white and found that the inner lining keeps the fabric from being see-through.

Bow-Detail Linen Midi Dress

This dress is a complete showstopper. I’m imagining wearing this wandering the streets of Italy in search of the perfect pasta pomodoro. Tomato girl summer forever.

Malika Linen Jumpsuit

Flattering and feminine, this jumpsuit is an easy yes. I’d style this with a ponytail and a statement earring for a fun night out.

Full Of Sunshine Cotton-Linen Mini

This dress is business in the front, party in the back. If you’re wary of backless dresses, I recommend using KT Tape as an affordable, secure sticky bra alternative.

Fit & Flare Linen-Blend Midi Dress

This dress is giving yacht club vibes without the price tag. Easily dressed up and down, this linen dress is perfect for packing on vacation.

Cami Linen Dress

Summer is the season of bold dressing, and this printed mini dress has my name written all over it. Perfect for Euro Summer styling and backyard BBQs alike.

Pauline Linen Midi Dress

This is the only LBD I want to be wearing this summer, except in this case it stands for “Linen Black Dress.” With its halter neckline and midi length, this dress pairs perfectly with both flats and heels.

Ciara Linen Romper

It’s rare for a piece of clothing to pair well with sneakers and heels, but this linen romper looks superb with both. I’m also a sucker for a square neckline and a one-piece.

Posse Lori Dress in Polka Dot

Although a bit of a splurge, I dream about this dress and had to include it on this list. Backless and beautiful, this is my ideal summer wedding guest dress.

The post Blush Sticks Have Gone Viral—These 12 Will Give You the Perfect Sun-Kissed Glow appeared first on Camille Styles.

Hear me out: I would never advocate for a sunburn. I don’t even support tanning—just perfect your self-tanner routine then coat yourself with sunscreen. However, I can’t help but think that the sun-kissed flush exclusive to summer is the perfect beauty look. You know what I mean: rosy red cheeks minus the heat exhaustion, and the pinkish tint across your nose, but without the sun damage. No wonder blush is one of summer’s biggest trends. And now, you can get that romantic flush easier than ever with the best blush sticks on the market.

Featured image from our interview with Babba Rivera.

Why Blush Sticks Are My Summer Beauty Staple

In the summer, my makeup routine dwindles down to almost nothing. (Skinimalism is going strong!) When I’m traveling, I’m deliberately minimalist about the products I pack. But even when I’m home, I don’t want layers of product sitting on my face.

Simplicity is key—and so is versatility. Enter: blush sticks. This seasonal replacement for powder or liquid blushes is convenient on the go but also lasts longer and sticks easier to fresh-faced summer skin.

Comparing Cream, Powder, and Liquid Blush

Blush sticks are cream blushes that come in easy, pocket-sized packaging. You might be used to brushing on a powder blush to the apples of your cheeks, but cream blush is becoming everyone’s go-to for a rosy complexion.

Cream blush sits on top of the skin, letting you do more with less product. Thanks to its texture, it promotes an even, dewy complexion. While powder blush can crease and liquid blush can cling to dry patches, cream blush gives you a natural, glowy finish.

The Magic of a Multi-Stick

Another benefit of blush sticks is that they often are multiple products in one. Palettes are passé, but multi-sticks give you a cohesive wash of color for your cheeks, eyes, lips, and even the bridge of your nose. With all its many applications, you can rely on one product for countless looks.

The Best Blush Sticks for a Year-Round, Sun-Kissed Glow

I tested and reviewed the creamiest blush sticks for every makeup look, skin concern, and practical need. Ahead, you’ll discover blush sticks with SPF, the viral picks everybody’s talking about, and blush sticks that are, frankly, underrated. Read on for the best blush sticks to give you that summer glow in just a few swipes.

Rhode Pocket Blush Stick

Our verdict: The one that’s worth the hype.

Shade options: 6

Whenever Hailey Bieber releases a new product via her viral line, Rhode, the beauty world is rocked. This blush stick is no different—honestly, the hype just grows with every drop. And unlike other beauty brands that are all smoke and mirrors, these buzzed-about products quickly become mainstays in our makeup routines. Because yes, they’re that good.

This blush stick is a buildable pigment that glides on smooth and gives you an instant pick-me-up. I like the shade “toasted teddy.” It feels sophisticated while still being fun and flirty. Consider it the red wine of blush sticks that’s perfect for summer nights.

Glo Skin Beauty Cream Blush Stick

Our verdict: The best blush stick for layering (i.e., you need at least two shades in your bag at all times).

Shade options: 5

Camille (and every single last one of our editors) is obsessed with this cream blush stick from clean beauty favorite, Glo Skin. The shade options blend and mix perfectly. Camille likes to dot “Spark” high on the apples of her cheeks and across the bridge of her nose. Then, she goes back in with the shade “Desire” under her cheekbones, jawline, and around her hairline. For a foolproof, just-spent-the-day-in-the-sun glow, there’s no better pick.

Haus Labs Longwear Lip + Cheek Blush Stick

Our verdict: The best skin-boosting option that sensitive skin will love.

Shade options: 8

Hydrating and plumping, trust Lady Gaga to create a high-pigmented blush stick that plumps, hydrates, and soothes the skin. It’s formulated to boost collagen, and plump and hydrate the skin while reducing unwanted redness for the perfect amount of pigment. Best for sensitive skin or irritated skin, this is the best blush stick to give your skin some TLC after long days in the sun.

ILIA Multi-Stick Cream Blush + Highlighter + Skin Tint

Our verdict: The three-in-one favorite with countless shades.

Shade options: 12

One of the best blush sticks out there, this ILIA multi-stick can do it all. The skincare-first makeup brand makes clean products that look good without compromising your skin. This buildable blush stick is also a highlighter and lip tint. Dot it everywhere you need a bit of color and blend with a finger (my favorite application method) for natural, dewy coverage. The subtle iridescence will make you look radiant—never shiny.

Gen See Straight Flush Glow Sticks

Our verdict: Your answer to a perfect, sunless glow.

Shade options: 5

When a blush stick is literally inspired by the look of sun-kissed skin, you know it’s going to be good. These pocket-sized multi-sticks are our Managing Editor’s favorites. She dots the “Punch” high on the apples of her cheeks for a vibrant, but not overwhelming color. (Think: a punchy coral that’s perfect for summertime.) What’s more, they’re formulated with skin-loving ingredients like shea butter, vitamin E, and hyaluronic acid for a hydrated sheen and enviable glow. These sticks are so easy to layer, you’ll be tempted to buy every shade.

Westman Atelier Cream Blush Stick

Our verdict: The one that will convert you.

Shade options: 9

I’ve long been a believer in Westman Atelier’s foundation sticks. Now, the blush sticks have found their way into my makeup bag as well. This luxury, clean beauty mainstay will make you turn on any other blush. It contains skin-loving ingredients like kaolin clay, which prevents clogged pores and absorbs excess oil, and antioxidant-rich vitamins C and E. Just one swipe is enough for a healthy wash of color.

Ami Cole Blush & Lip Multi Stick

Our verdict: Your skin, just glowier.

Shade options: 4

This lightweight cream blush is the closest I’ve gotten to a natural, skin-like glow. The blend is seamless, and it’s easy to apply with your fingers alone. (No endless patting of your makeup sponge.) If you know Ami Cole from their featherlight foundation, trust that their blush and lip multi-stick is just as satisfying to put on. The texture melts into your skin for a no-makeup-makeup look. #CleanLook lovers, this one’s for you.

Violette FR Bisou Blush Stick

Our verdict: The French-girl favorite.

Shade options: 4

I can never resist a French-girl beauty secret. (Is anyone immune to their timeless, but trend-setting prowess?) I even stock up on my favorite French pharmacy products during every Charles de Gaulle layover. And one thing French girls know, it’s a rouge—whether it’s their lips or their cheeks, they always get it right. Violette FR’s matte cream blush gives you a classic look you can dab on your cheeks and lips. The marbled swirl makes for a multidimensional finish, while the attached blush ensures a smooth blend.

Ogee Contour Blush Stick

Our verdict: Next-gen contour.

Shade options: 10

Contour isn’t dead—it’s just been revamped. This contour blush stick is ideal for anyone who doesn’t want to give up on their sculpted look. A single swipe defines your features without weighing down your skin. With a buildable glow and iridescent finish, you get a glassy, gleaming color with each swipe. It also uses green coffee oil to stimulate collagen, sal tree resin to smooth over pores, and tapioca powder to absorb excess oils.

Merit Flush Balm Cheek Color

Our verdict: Your go-to, buildable blush for a sun-kissed look.

Shade options: 9

The satiny, nonstick finish on this multi-use balm is universally flattering—and we love that it’s tiny enough to slide into your pocket or purse. Blendable and buildable, it conditions skin with vitamin E oil for a natural—never cakey—finish. Most importantly, it lets your skin tone shine through for a realistic flush. Pro tip: Pair with Merit’s Dayglow highlighting balm for a dewy sheen without any sparkle.

Olio E Osso Lip and Cheek Stick

Our verdict: The lightweight blush stick you’ll take on every trip.

Shade options: 10

With more of a texture that’s more oil than cream, I always imagine this blush stick as a vacation carry-on. Swipe it on your skin post-beach/pre-dinner or in the morning before setting off on your adventures. It’s light, hydrating, and defines barely-there color. As one of the OG clean beauty blush sticks, it’s a staple for its hydrating properties and unique olive oil formula. Said differently: where I go, it goes. Always.

Colorescience Sunforgettable Total Protection Color Balm SPF 50

Our verdict: The sun-protectant, buildable boost of SPF.

Shade options: 6

You might know Colorescience from their viral color-changing sunscreen. But the brand’s magic with pigmented SPF doesn’t end there. This multi-stick gives you both a natural flush with its range of pigments and a shield of mineral sun protection. However, you don’t want to count on it alone to protect you from the sun. Dermatologists say that makeup products containing sunscreen aren’t as effective alone since we tend not to use enough of them. Still, this is a great blush stick for a buildable boost of SPF that you’ll be happy to reapply.

The Best Face Masks for Sensitive Skin

1. Camille’s Top Pick: Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask

The Camille Styles team has sworn by this viral mask for years because of how it revives parched and tired skin overnight. The nourishing formula is jam-packed with gentle skin hydrators like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide to replenish and smooth even the most sensitive skin types. Even if your skin is pretty reactive, you can rest assured your complexion will stay calm and happy because this mask is non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, and also has the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance.

2. Camille’s Other Favorite: Activist Manuka Honey Mask

Honey isn’t just a sweetener to add to your food. Antioxidant-rich Manuka honey, in particular, is known for its powerful healing properties, and Camille loves using this mask from Activist Skincare when she’s experiencing any sort of skin flare-up.

Made with 100% Manuka honey, this luxe yet simplistic formula may help clear up rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and acne. If you’re not struggling with any of those skin woes, this is still a worthy addition to your routine since it can help promote skin regeneration and leaves behind a healthy glow.

3. Camille’s Splurge Pick: Blue Lagoon Mineral Mask

People travel thousands of miles (and spend thousands of dollars) to step into the geothermal waters of Iceland’s Blue Lagoon. The springs are known to have anti-aging benefits and help enhance the skin barrier. Luckily, you can experience the revitalizing power of the Blue Lagoon from the comfort of your home with this mineral-rich mask. The formula is infused with bioactive Blue Lagoon Seawater, which can help calm your complexion, regardless of whether you use it on your face as an overnight mask or all over your body as a plush restorative cream.

Sheet masks are a quick and easy way to increase hydration, and few compare to Neutrogena’s affordable Hydro Boost mask. Dermatologists constantly recommend this brand (and product) for how it quenches dry skin in contact with hyaluronic acid. The gel texture also adds to the overall treatment since it can soothe and balance skin as you wear it.

Pro tip: Store it in your fridge for 30 minutes before using for extra calming coolness.

5. Best Face Mask for Dry Sensitive Skin: Youth to the People Superberry Hydrate + Glow Dream Mask

If you’re after plump, radiant, soft skin, this mask is a must-have. Filled with antioxidant-rich super berries (think acai, prickly pear, and goji berries) as well as THD Ascorbate (a potent yet gentle form of vitamin C), the thick overnight mask feels like a rich cream that envelops the skin. Come morning, your complexion will look brighter and bouncier, like you just came from a high-end facial.

6. Best Brightening Face Mask for Sensitive Skin: Tatcha Violet-C Radiance Mask

Some people with sensitive skin may have a complicated relationship with vitamin C. While it’s considered the gold standard for brightening and evening out skin tone, the ingredient can oftentimes cause irritation. However, Tatcha crafted the ideal vitamin C-infused mask so those with sensitive skin can reap the benefits sans irritation. Violet-C combines two forms of the antioxidant with the brand’s signature Hadasei-3 complex to deeply hydrate and boost radiance. You’ll see a difference in how you glow after just one treatment.

Pro tip: You can use Tatcha’s “Is This Right For Me?” quiz on the product page to find out if the formulation will gel with your skin type.

7. Best Calming Face Mask for Sensitive Skin: Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask Extreme Detoxifying Hydrator

Redness doesn’t stand a chance against this ultra-calming cucumber gel mask from Peter Thomas Roth. Whether you struggle with rosacea or are dealing with a pesky sunburn, slathering this across your face will provide you with some instant relief.

Botanical extracts like cucumber, papaya, chamomile, bilberry, and aloe vera quickly soothe and draw moisture into the skin, helping speed up the reparative process and warding off any future dryness. Best of all, you can use it either as a quick at-home spa treatment or leave it on overnight for a major boost of hydration.

8. Best Overnight Mask for Sensitive Skin: Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Overnight Hydrating Face Mask with 10.5% Squalane

Every winter, my skin freaks out due to the dry, cold temperatures. As soon as I feel my skin starting to get dry and tight, I pull out this thick balmy mask. Mega hydrators, including squalane—a natural moisturizer that locks hydration into the skin—and glacial glycoproteins make the skin a water magnet to keep it hydrated through even the driest of seasons. Since introducing this into my routine, flakes and dry patches have disappeared for good. Plus, it’s paraben- and fragrance-free, which adds major points for folks with sensitive skin.

9. Best Clay Mask for Sensitive Skin: Mara Spirulina + Ashwagandha Volcanic Sea Clay Detox Mask

Most clay masks can be a bit too stripping for sensitive skin, but this one is an exception thanks to its combination of volcanic ash, algae, and ashwagandha (a plant that can help boost hydration). The creamy clay formula gently detoxes pores and keeps irritation at bay. Rather than feeling tight after washing this off, your skin maintains a soft and supple bounciness courtesy of hydrating honey and soothing green tea.

10. Best Exfoliating Mask for Sensitive Skin: Alpyn Beauty Wild Huckleberry Brightening Peel Mask for Sensitive Skin

Exfoliating is usually a one-way ticket to irritation for those with sensitive skin. However, Alpyn Beauty cracked the code and developed an ultra-gentle mask that delicately sloughs away dead skin, blackheads, and other impurities without leaving you red, raw, or dry. The secret lies in an all-natural eight-acid complex that utilizes good-for-you alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) to dissolve dull, dry skin. It also contains chamomile and colloidal oatmeal that help deeply moisturize and soothe the skin to maintain a happy complexion.

11. Best Hydrating Mask for Sensitive Skin: First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Oatmeal Mask

All it takes is 10 minutes for this mask to work its magic and rebalance the most dehydrated complexions. With colloidal oatmeal as the hero ingredient—a dermatologist-recommended skin soother that can boost hydration and calm eczema flares—this mask helps the most sensitize skin types. Shea butter and sea buckthorn also magnify the restorative benefits of the oatmeal to keep your skin soft and conditioned.

12. Best Face Mask for Acne-Prone Sensitive Skin: Peach Slices Snail Rescue Intensive Wash Off Jelly Mask

Acne-prone sensitive skin can be tricky: You want a lightweight mask that won’t clog pores or cause any adverse reactions while still addressing breakouts. This mask does all of that with the help of snail mucin. The featherlight jelly has become a popular ingredient in the skincare world. It helps repair texture and nourishes every inch of your skin to diminish the appearance of acne scars, discoloration, and dehydration.

What to Consider When Shopping for Face Masks for Sensitive Skin

Ingredients

Regardless of your skin type, it’s always important to look at the ingredients list before using a new product. However, this is crucial for those with sensitive skin. Some of the most common additives in skincare can be known to cause irritation (including fragrances and essential oils), so you’ll want to ensure the face mask you choose only contains the gentlest ingredients. Colloidal oatmeal, hyaluronic acid, squalane, and cucumber are four ultra-nourishing ingredients that are known to soothe and replenish the skin barrier, making them more than ideal for sensitive skin. The majority of the masks on our list contain at least one of these.

Your Concerns

Is your skin extra dry and flaky? Are you struggling with an acne flare-up or dealing with rosacea? Think about your skin’s specific needs before selecting a face mask. By choosing one catered to the concern you’re trying to address, you’ll get one step closer to achieving clear, bouncy, healthy skin.

If you’re looking to pack on the hydration, look for a mask with mega hydrators like glycerin and hyaluronic acid. The Summer Friday’s Jet Lag Mask contains both. For those with acne-prone skin, the Peach Slices Snail Rescue Intensive Wash Off Jelly Mask will help clear up breakouts and prevent acne scars. As for rosacea, you can’t go wrong with the super soothing First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Oatmeal Mask.

Pro tip: Allergic reactions can sometimes be a symptom of sensitive skin, so make sure to perform an allergen test prior to using a new product. Apply a small amount of the product to a clean patch of skin on the inside of your arm and leave it on for the instructed time. After 7 to 10 days, if you don’t experience any itchiness, swelling, or redness, you’re good to go. As always, if you have any big concerns, you can talk to a dermatologist to make sure you’re using products that won’t irritate your skin.

Packaging

Most often, masks will come in one of two formats: Either a squeeze tube or a tub. The packaging has no effect on the performance of the formula itself and comes down to personal preference. That said, dermatologists often recommend opting for tubed products, as it’s easier for bacteria to manifest and contaminate products in tubs when you’re scooping the product out with your bare hands. If you opt for a tub, make sure you’re always using clean hands to apply the product.

Open up my medicine cabinet and it’s immediately obvious: this girl is a skincare junkie. I’ve tested all the best moisturizers, decided which eye creams are worth the splurge, and found serums to rival any in-office treatment. But with so many brands entering the space every day, it can feel impossible to keep up—and decide where to direct your beauty budget. The brand that sits front and center on my (admittedly overcrowded) skincare shelf? Jordan Harper’s Barefaced.

Now, I’m wary of anything buzzy. As much as I love diving into trends and dissecting new-to-me beauty rituals and routines, I want the science and anecdotal evidence as proof. With celeb backing and the expertise of a nurse practitioner advising every formulation, I knew I needed to get my hands on Barefaced for myself.

Jordan Harper, Founder of Barefaced, Shares Her Glowy Skin Secrets

Barefaced first came on my radar after I caught tennis darling and lifestyle brand founder Paige Lorenze dishing about the products on Instagram stories. Her AM skincare ritual leans on the brand’s antioxidant-packed Toning Pads to exfoliate and the Overachiever to hydrate and soothe. At the end of the day, the Hydrating Lotion and Everyday Eye Hero offer some much-needed moisture before going to bed.

But because I know that so much of social media is smoke and mirrors, I went straight to the source to better understand the efficacy behind these buzzed-about products—and why our favorite celebs can’t get enough.

Paige Lorenze uses Barefaced to get her signature glow. How do the Barefaced products in her skincare routine work together to give her that coveted, lit-from-within complexion?

At Barefaced, our philosophy is “Less but Better.” We intentionally formulate all our products to work synergistically, ensuring you get the maximum benefit from each. Using the core four products, we call them the Bare Necessities, to promote long-term skin health is what really gives the lit-from-within glow.

When your skin is properly exfoliated, hydrated, and protected the glow speaks for itself!

What should everyone include in their morning and evening skincare routines?

After treating thousands of patients as a nurse practitioner, I recognized a common theme: my patients didn’t know which products they actually needed for their skin to be healthy. You can do all the face masks and hydrating serums you want but if you’re not using the core four products to prevent, protect, correct, and repair the skin, your skin lacks the essential nutrients it needs to be healthy. Remember, glowing skin is healthy skin.

The core four products include an exfoliant, vitamin C, a retinoid, and SPF. At Barefaced, we understand that the skincare industry is vast and starting a daily routine can feel overwhelming and confusing. To simplify this process, we’ve curated The Bare Necessities bundle. This collection features the core four products essential for improving skin health and strengthening the skin barrier.

Exfoliant

These treatment pads are packed with AHAs, BHAs, antioxidants, and hydrating ingredients to tackle dullness, rough texture, and breakouts.

Vitamin C

Formulated with pro-collagen ingredients, Liquid Gold brightens, defends against damaging environmental stressors, and minimizes the appearance of premature fine lines and wrinkles.

Retinoid

Our key ingredient, RetinAL, surpasses all retinols in strength by about 20 times while working about 11 times faster. Encapsulated in a time-released formulation, RetinAL Skin Therapy also includes bakuchiol and other soothing ingredients to ensure it’s well tolerated with minimal sensitivity.

Sunscreen

These broad-spectrum, oil-free SPFs are crafted for everyday wear, catering to all skin types and tones.

We always say, if you’re not wearing a daily sunscreen, investing in other skincare is a waster. Daily SPF is the ultimate anti-aging product. What sets [our sunscreens] apart is their added skin benefits. They’re more than just sunscreen, formulated with these key ingredients:

 • Caffeine. Works as an antioxidant to delay the skin’s aging process and helps tighten the skin/pores.
 • Niacinamide. Provides anti-aging benefits while brightening, helping control oil production and reducing redness.

When I joined the Camille Styles team (officially full-time this month!), I knew I’d be surrounded by inspiring women. So when I recently decided to overhaul my beauty routine, I naturally turned to Slack: “Help a girl out—drop your must-have beauty products!” Thirty minutes (and too many messages to count) later, my cart was full of tried-and-true products based on years of use—and of course, the most emphatic recommendations.

Beauty products on counter.

Because we don’t gate-keep around here, I’m dropping every editor’s must-have desert island product in the list below. Whether you find yourself stranded on a desert island this summer (best of luck) or curating a beauty routine refresh, look no further. Consider this your insider scoop on all the beauty products our team can’t live without.

Wander Beauty Mile High Club™ Length and Define Mascara

“Finally: I’ve found the best lengthening, volumizing, and defining mascara that doesn’t leave my lashes clumpy. It’s waterproof but easy to take off at the end of the day. With just a couple of swipes, my lashes are equally lengthened and give that flirty, doe-eyed look that I’m 100% obsessed with.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

19/99 Precision Color Pencil

“Maybe controversial these days, but I’ll never give up on lining my lower eyelid! I started tightlining for a night out during the peak 90s grunge revival/indie sleaze era in high school and I’ve never given it up. I’ve gone through many an eyeliner pencil, and when you’re lining that close to your eye, you need something that glides across your lid. I’ve never used anything as effective or smooth in just one swipe than this 19/99 color pencil.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Glo Skin Beauty Oil Free Tinted Primer

Any good desert island product needs to be a multitasker—and this primer is the ultimate. It gives a lightweight coverage with a blurring effect to hide pores, nourishing skincare ingredients, plus SPF 30. I wear it on its own to work out in the morning, then layer my makeup on top during the day. Color-correcting, evening out skin tone and texture, and boosting your makeup’s wear-time—it truly does it all!” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

City Lips Plumping Lip Gloss

“I had ditched lip glosses long ago, not loving how sticky and too high-shine the majority were. But this gloss offers the perfect amount of moisture for a dewy pout. What’s more, not only does it look good, but it also offers a dramatic plumping effect immediately and then gradually builds over time. Formulated with hyaluronic acid and oligopeptides, it volumizes lips while offering major hydration.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

MERIT Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Foundation and Concealer Stick

“As someone who has previously opted for more full-coverage makeup, I haven’t worn foundation in all of 2024, thanks to MERIT Beauty’s Perfecting Stick. Marketed as not a foundation and not a concealer, this one product has replaced both in my makeup bag. I apply it under my eyes, on any blemishes, and on my high points, then blend with a brush for an even, lightweight base.” — Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Skincare Foundation

“This is hands down the best tinted moisturizer I’ve ever used. The formula is filled with good-for-your-skin ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, so it’s a beauty buy that doubles as a skincare product. Plus, it’s ideal for getting that dewy and glazed donut-y look.” — Megan Beauchamp, Contributing Editor

Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick

“Blush is by far my favorite part of my makeup routine. I’ve perfected the ultimate three-step blush application that keeps its color and glow all day and night. The base? Westman Atelier’s blush stick in Petal. The non-toxic, creamy formula coupled with the prettiest rose-y color makes this product worth every penny. Steps two and three involve setting the cream blush with a powder blush, and topping it all off with an honorable mention, Charlotte Tilbury’s Highlighter Wand in Pinkgasm.— Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara

It’s everything you want from a mascara: elongates lashes, doesn’t pill or smudge, and—most importantly—washes off easily. You normally get one or two but not all three. I don’t know how they do it, but I’ve been wearing this mascara for 3+ years and it’s my forever go-to.” — Brittany Chatburn, Content Marketing Director

Kulfi Beauty Kajal Eyeliner in Rain Check

As someone who rarely wears makeup, it probably seems interesting that my choice for a desert island would be blue eyeliner. But on days when I just need to infuse my look with a little pop and joy, this eyeliner works its magic. I use a very thin line of blue eyeliner, but it’s just enough that when I’m talking to people while wearing it, they almost always have to stop and call out how much they love the blue. It’s the perfect way to subtly elevate your eyes, and the formula is super creamy and easy enough for even me to apply.” — Suruchi Avasthi, Food Editor

Jones Road Miracle Balm

“The Jones Road Miracle Balm is a game-changer for anyone seeking a no-makeup makeup look. It is ultra-moisturizing on the face and gives an effortlessly natural look with a dewy, radiant finish. Apply it with your fingers or a brush, which makes it the perfect low-maintenance desert island product. The balm is incredibly easy to use and buildable. It’s the perfect hero product for minimalist beauty routines.” — Brandy Joy Smith, Motherhood Contributor

Chanel Le Rouge Duo Ultra Tenue

“There is no better lip stain on the market and I will die on that hill. I’ve been using this product for YEARS. My favorite colors are Bright Raspberry, Strawberry Red, and Soft Rose, but you can’t go wrong on any to your liking. The stain stays on ALL day and ALL night, isn’t drying with the gloss coating, and doesn’t transfer to your drinking glass or partner’s lips.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm

“The Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm is nothing short of magic and would accompany me on a desert island or tropical getaway. Its buttery texture and long-lasting hydration make it the best product to always have on hand. I just repurchased it in Vanilla for the third time—it’s that good!” — Anna Decker, Social Media and E-Commerce Manager

Supergoop! Glowscreen in Golden Hour

“I am no one until I put on my Supergoop! Glowscreen in the morning. It quite literally brings me to life, adding the perfect amount of color and glow to my otherwise tired-looking face. I wear it alone on a day-to-day basis, but this sunscreen is also the perfect shimmery base for my makeup routine (even at night). Major props to Supergoop! for making sunscreen such an addicting part of my skincare/makeup routine. My skin will thank you in 20 years!” — Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

“Listen, I know this product had its moment in 2022. But there hasn’t been a night since I treated myself to this lip mask two years ago where I don’t put this stuff on before bed. Long story short, it’s my ride-or-die. My lips stay soft and hydrated year-round and I haven’t had chapped lips once, even in winter. My go-to is vanilla!” — Kristen Garaffo, Design Editor

Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops

“I live for a faux glow. A bit of self tan instantly boosts my confidence and I’ve tried everything from lotions to foams to water. Hands down, my favorite is Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops. A few drops in your moisturizer turns it into a self tanner, plus you can apply it without a mitt. It’s so easy and you can control how deep your tan is by the amount of drops you use. I love!” — Kristen Garaffo, Design Editor

Tower28 Beauty SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray with Hypochlorous Acid

“This product changed my life, and I can’t stop talking about it to everyone. The start of my skincare routine, a top off when my skin is feeling irritated, and a preventive measure before applying makeup so I don’t break out—I use this multiple times a day, every day. If you haven’t heard of this universal healing spray, it’s quite literally magic in a bottle.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Skin Pharm Sheer Defense SPF

When I first tried this SPF, I was in shock. A hydrating and tinted sunscreen? How? Diving in further, I saw that it contains hyaluronic acid. I love how lightweight and dewy my skin feels. If I’m on a deserted island, I’m going to need a good SPF that helps even out my skin tone for a flawless glow.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm + Red Correct

I’ve been searching my entire life for a product like Hero Cosmetics’ Rescue Balm. As someone who suffers from rosacea, regular foundation doesn’t cut it when it comes to a flawless face. This is THE product for me—and it’s always the first product I reach for on no-make, makeup days. It goes on green, with the same consistency as a concealer, but blends effortlessly into the skin, combatting any redness. It’s lightweight, and can be applied under makeup or on its own. Simply put—I couldn’t live without it.” — Casey McKee, Editorial Intern

Dr. Loretta Intense Replenishing Serum

“This ceramide serum is my secret for putting on/taking off makeup. Layered beneath my makeup, it’s the perfect primer that creates a canvas to help my products stay on all night. I use a ton of liquid-based products, so a hydrated face is key to making sure they look dewy all night and don’t dry and crack in the middle of the dance floor. And after the night ends, when I’ve scrubbed my face raw to get off all the products, I need a hydrating serum to replenish my complexion so I wake up refreshed—even after a late night. This versatile serum is both. I also slather it on my skin when my barrier needs some TLC. It’s a staple in my travel bag since it can do it all.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Bondi Sands Technocolor 1 Hour Express Self Tanning Foam

My favorite self-tanning product, hands down. It’s foolproof to apply and the color develops within an hour. I use the one made for olive skin tones, and it gives the impression that you’ve just come back from an exotic two-week holiday.” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

Renee Rouleau Mint Renewal Cleanser

“I can’t stop talking about this product. I love it so much that my mom bought it for me when I went back to Nebraska to visit. The peppermint oil feels so refreshing and the light exfoliating jojoba beads keep my skin glowing.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Soma Ayurvedic Jasmine Body Oil

“My favorite part of my self-care routine in the evening is using body oil after a hot shower. This oil has the most incredible scent, and seamlessly absorbs into your skin, leaving it soft and hydrated. Plus, this oil makes for the most perfect, self-care moment to just pause and breathe. It’s definitely a little bit of a splurge, but it’s well worth it for how amazing it makes me feel.” — Suruchi Avasthi, Food Editor

DERMAFLASH LUXE+ Advanced Sonic Dermaplaning + Peach Fuzz Removal

“My favorite self-tanning product, hands down. It’s foolproof to apply and the color develops within an hour. I use the one made for olive skin tones, and it gives the impression that you’ve just come back from an exotic two-week holiday.” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

All your beauty questions—answered. Our resident dermatologist, Dr. Geddes Bruce breaks down the biggest topics in beauty, from hair loss to Botox and everything in between. Send us a DM @camillestyles with your own burning q’s and we may address it in a future column.

Say it with me: sun protection is sexy. With sunscreens for every skin type on the market—and a new class of self-tanners giving you a natural glow without having to bake in the sun—it’s easier than ever to stay protected. Face sunscreens can be tinted, reapplied over makeup, and are laden with the benefits of serums. Body sunscreens are no longer sticky and dull, but are often the final step in a bodycare routine for glowing skin. Perhaps it goes without saying, but sunscreen is one of my favorite parts of my beauty routine.

A Dermatologist Breaks Down the Biggest Sunscreen Myths

Q: I feel overwhelmed with everything I hear about sunscreen. I know I need to be wearing it every day and applying it often… but how often? And how do I make sure I’m picking the right one?

Social media has played a huge role in making sunscreen fun—and, dare I say, cool. But it can also make it seem complicated. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed given all the product options and application tips. Plenty of sunscreens are more style than SPF, and it can be hard to determine what’s actually worth the money.

To cut through the noise and keep you up to speed, we consulted our resident dermatologist, Dr. Geddes-Bruce. Of course, she has plenty say on the subject. “We are, unfortunately, entering an age of misinformation,” says Dr. Geddes. “There’s a ton of fear-mongering these days on the dangers of sunscreen. Fake-perts post false claims about the dangers of sunscreens, and the content spreads like wildfire.”

Despite all the misinformation online, sun protection is simple. “Sunscreen is one tool to help minimize exposing our skin to excess ultraviolet radiation, the number one cause of skin cancer,” says Dr. Geddes. It’s as simple as that.

Ahead, Dr. Geddes takes us through what to know about sunscreen in 2024. Prepare to discover the best dermatologist-approved sunscreens—and exactly how to use them.

Chemical vs. Physical Sunscreens

“Chemical and physical sunscreens both prevent ultraviolet radiation from damaging skin cell’s DNA. There isn’t one type that is better than the other—they both have their advantages and disadvantages,” says Dr. Geddes.

“The best sunscreen is the one that you will use and use properly.”

Ultimately, the difference between physical and chemical sunscreens lies in the ingredients they use to protect skin from the sun’s rays. Dive into each option below to determine which might be best for you.

Physical sunscreens

Physical sunscreens (aka mineral sunscreens) create a protective layer over your skin using ingredients like titanium dioxide, iron oxide, and zinc oxide.

These ingredients cause the dreaded white cast that has made many people go for chemical sunscreens instead. However, new formulas and tinted alternatives can make physical sunscreens easier to wear.

“Mineral sunscreens are great for some, but they tend to leave a white cast on the skin, which is undesirable for people with melanin-rich skin. So, there’s a whole portion of the population who tend to struggle with pigmentation issues and can benefit from sunscreen. But they don’t have great options if they believe mineral sunscreens are the only choice.”

If you’re opting for a physical sunscreen, consider our editor-approved picks.

Chemical sunscreens

To keep skin protected, chemical sunscreens use a combination of organic filters like:

 • Avobenzone
 • Octocrylene
 • 2-Ethylhexyl salicylate
 • Ensulizole
 • Meradimate
 • Sulisobenzone

Since chemical sunscreens don’t create a physical screen against the sun like mineral sunscreens, be sure to wait 15 minutes after applying to go out into the sun. And just because a sunscreen is chemical doesn’t mean it’s bad for your skin.

“There is a lot of chemophobia on the internet. People distrust anything made with “chemicals,” and this goes for chemical sunscreens. In turn, inorganic sunscreens are touted as the only safe alternative, which is simply not true,” says Dr. Geddes. “There’s no need to demonize the cosmetically elegant options—organic sunscreens—especially for people with skin of color.”

When selecting a chemical sunscreen, read the ingredient label first. Ensure your product doesn’t contain the following:

 • Oxybenzone
 • Octinoxate
 • Octisalate
 • Octocrylene
 • Homosalate
 • Parabens

The Best Hybrid Sunscreens

If you want the benefits of a chemical sunscreen with the physical screen that mineral SPF uses, many new sunscreens are using hybrid formulas that combine zinc with protective chemicals.

How to Properly Apply Sunscreen

“Apply the correct amount [of sunscreen] and reapply every 2-3 hours or any time after water exposure/excess sweating,” advises Dr. Geddes.

But how much is enough? Dr. Geddes notes that, “Generally, we don’t use enough sunscreen when we apply it to our skin. Studies have shown that the way we apply it gives us an SPF of about ¼ of what is on the label. So, picking a higher SPF can get you a higher level of protection.”

For your face, ears, and neck, you should use about one teaspoon or 5 ml of sunscreen. The three-finger rule is a good guide. Squeeze out enough sunscreen to cover the length of three fingers, then spread evenly.

“If you are worried about aging skin, pigmentation, or are at risk of developing skin cancer, an ideal sunscreen routine would be to apply your favorite one to your face and neck daily, after your morning skincare products, no matter the weather. If you are spending time outdoors make sure you reapply every 2-3 hours.”

The final word? Apply and then reapply (and then reapply again. “A double application of sunscreen is a good way to make sure you are getting enough initial coverage and upon re-application. But honestly, any re-application is better than nothing!”

The Skinny on SPF Makeup

These days, every product contains SPF-something. From tinted foundations to face mists and even SPF eyeshadow. These products are a good way to add SPF into your routine, but they shouldn’t be your only source of sunscreen.

“Newer products that combine makeup and sunscreen give some small degree of UV protection, but it’s unlikely that you will be applying the makeup in a thick enough layer to give the stated SPF on the bottle. Most people just don’t wear that heavy of makeup. So, it’s best to have a separate sunscreen underneath your makeup,” says Dr. Geddes.

Woman picking fruit outside.

Why You Shouldn’t Mix SPF With Other Products

“Mixing your sunscreen with your moisturizer isn’t a good idea,” says Dr. Geddes. SPF in products like moisturizers and makeup is formulated to give you protection. However, mixing the two can dilute your protection and render the formula inactive.

“There’s no way to guarantee you are mixing it evenly, and you will be interfering with the inherent properties of the formulation that allow it to form a protective film layer. Ideally you apply your moisturizer first, then your sunscreen on top.”

Instead, use products with SPF in them—though, as referenced above, don’t count on them to be your only protection.

Camille Styles dancing outside.

Sunscreen Innovations to Try in 2024

New innovations in SPF are emerging every day, and some of them are more promising than others. One new SPF trend: sun patches. These, like pimple patches, wrinkle patches, or eye patches, sit atop the skin and act as physical shields from the sun.

“Sun patches are an exciting new form of photoprotection. They can provide all-day, reliable coverage like UPF clothing and can be a great addition for someone who is spending a lot of time outdoors. The issue is that many of them are highly visible, the coverage is limited (so you’ll still need sunscreen), and they can be pricey, not to mention the single-use ones are wasteful.”

Sunscreen Myths to Ditch

“The most bizarre and potentially harmful trend I’ve seen on social media is the recipes for homemade sunscreen. You just can’t effectively mix your own sunscreen in a home kitchen and expect it to work. Stick with the tried-and-true tested stuff.”

Other myths say that sunscreen is bad for you—or worse, urge you not to wear it. Though sunscreen is the main (and the best) source of sun protection, it is not the only one. “If you really want to avoid sunscreen then throw on a large hat and sunglasses, and photoprotective clothing, and avoid peak sunshine hours (between 10 and 2 p.m.).”

The Perfect White Tee Does Exist—Our Style Editor Found the Best on the Market https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-white-t-shirts-for-women/ https://camillestyles.com/beauty/best-white-t-shirts-for-women/#respond Fri, 14 Jun 2024 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=271168 And no, it doesn't cost a fortune.

The post The Perfect White Tee Does Exist—Our Style Editor Found the Best on the Market appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
Whether you’re building a capsule wardrobe, looking to refresh your basics, or feeling stuck with your style, purchasing a good white t-shirt is always a good place to start. The best white t-shirts for women can be worn alone, styled up or down, and layered under sweaters and jackets, making them an essential investment in every woman’s closet. In theory, finding a perfect white t-shirt should be easy, but for whatever reason the number one fashion question in my group text is always “Does anybody have a white t-shirt that they actually love?”

It seems as if every tee is either too tight, too cropped, too sheer, or too baggy, and finding a tee that checks off every box feels like mission impossible. Plus, the online shopping market is overflowing with options for the best white t-shirts for women, so even choosing one to order can feel overwhelming.

But fear not! I ordered and tried every white t-shirt that the internet recommends so you don’t have to.

The Best White T-Shirts For Women

Sure, a white t-shirt is a white t-shirt and you can make do with what you’ve got. Finding the right white t-shirt though feels like Cinderella slipping her foot into the glass slipper for the first time. You realize that all of the other white t-shirts you’ve tried weren’t right for you, and a simple tee becomes your new favorite top. At least, that’s how I felt during this process.

Read on for my review of the best white t-shirts for women on the market, and find out which tee is my glass slipper.

Best Overall White T-Shirt: LESET Margo Tee

TikTok is obsessed with the Margo Tee, so I had very high expectations. Spoiler: those expectations were exceeded. I sized up to a medium so that it wouldn’t be tight across the chest and I love the fit. The length hits right at the waist of most of my jeans and the sleeves slightly flair out for a flattering fit on my arms. It’s slimming without being fitted and thin without being sheer. What more could you want in a t-shirt? It’s $68, which is justified by the quality of the fit and feel.

Final verdict: Out of all of the best white t-shirts for women I tried, this is my number one recommendation for a classic tee that’ll last you years.

Best Affordable T-Shirt: Old Navy Vintage T-Shirt

Perfect for anyone that can relate to the “If I like it, I’ll buy it in every color” trend, this Old Navy T-Shirt is one you can stock up on without breaking the bank. I have a lot of friends who prefer to buy white t-shirts in bulk and toss them when they start to age, and this was their number one recommendation. Under $20, this tee has a super similar fit and feel to the LESET tee, though it’s a bit boxier and more casual. I will say that I sized up to a medium and wish I stuck to my true size, because it already has an intentional, vintage, oversized look.

Final verdict: I’ll be living in this tee all summer without fear of ruining it with sweat stains because I obviously already own a backup.

Best Cropped T-Shirt: Cotton Citizen The Tokyo Crop Tee

Long before my search for the best white t-shirts for women began, this was (and still is) one of my all-time favorite tees. It’s cropped without showing too much of my stomach, and the boxy, drapey fit makes it comfier than a typical cropped t-shirt. The material is nice and thick, while the thick neck hem adds a modern, edgier touch. I style this t-shirt most often with high-rise jeans and sneakers, but also love pairing it with leggings and biker shorts for running errands.

Final verdict: At $90, this tee has been in my closet for about three years now and has not changed colors or shown much wear, so in my book it’s worth every penny.

Best Scoop-Neck T-Shirt: Quince Cotton Modal Scoop Neck Tee

I never thought I would describe a white t-shirt as flattering and feminine, but this Scoop Neck Tee from Quince is just that. The swooping neckline is the perfect width so it doesn’t show your bra straps or any cleavage, but it accentuates your collar bones and any necklaces you might be wearing.

Final verdict: I reach for this tee when I’m going for a more polished, dressed up look for the office or brunch, and it instantly feels more elevated than your average tee. The best part? It’s only $15 but feels like it could be $50.

Best Tucking T-Shirt: Anine Bing Lili Tee

I’ve always sought after the polished look of a white t-shirt and slacks or denim, but have never been able to find a shirt long enough or slim enough to achieve the style. That is, until I discovered the Lili Tee from Anine Bing. This is honestly one of the longest t-shirts I’ve ever tried on, making it the perfect shirt for tucking in. Slim fitting on the body (even though it looks massive on the model), I absolutely love the balance of the baggy arms on this tee, because let’s be honest, nobody wants a tight arm opening.

Final verdict: I know that $100 feels crazy to spend on a plain white t-shirt, but the simple elegance of this tee will make you think otherwise, trust me.

Best Pointelle T-Shirt: LESET Pointelle Tee

Another fave from LESET, the Pointelle Tee is the perfect non-boring basic. It’s essentially a cross between a t-shirt and a top, because the pointelle knit and scalloped edges give the shirt enough detail to hold its own without accessories. On-trend yet still classic like all of the best white t-shirts for women, this tee is a girly-girl’s dream. I also love styling this ultra-feminine tee with denim overalls for some funky juxtaposition or under a crewneck sweater, letting the scalloped details peek through the neckline. Bonus points for the pointelle fabric being super breathable for the warmer months!

Final verdict: If you haven’t discovered the comfy, style-driven world of pointelle, welcome. This feminine tee with classic details is the perfect way to step up your white t-shirt game.

Best Long-Sleeve T-Shirt: Daily Drills Ribbed Long Sleeve

A long-sleeved version of my favorite ribbed baby tee, the Daily Drills Ribbed Long Sleeve is one of my most-worn tees in my closet. It’s a layering dream come true, pairing perfectly under vests, cardigans, overalls, and blazers, while still being thin enough so you don’t overheat. I also love wearing this t-shirt on my evening walks in lieu of a jacket. It has the perfect cropped-but-not-too-cropped fit and the armholes are surprisingly not too tight.

Final verdict: With this long-sleeved fit as proof, I’m thinking Daily Drills is due for a restock of the short-sleeved version ASAP because that would also make the shortlist for the best white t-shirts for women.

]]>
The summer solstice is my Super Bowl. I was born in the summer and my name literally means ‘The Sun.’ When the weather gets warmer, I defrost. I relish al fresco dining, summer outfits, and the smell of coconuts and vanilla (my signature summer scents). As a Black woman, I grew up inundated with beauty standards that valorized lighter skin and told me to get out of the sun. But for years, I would bare my skin to the sun in pursuit of my summer shade. I’ve always felt most myself after a sun-drenched day.

Cut to a decade later and I’m paying for my devotion with endless bottles of sunscreen and piles of protective clothing. While I still enjoy a healthy amount of sun exposure—my serotonin depends on it—I make sure to apply and reapply sunscreen fanatically. And you’ll never see me out without a hat.

Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About Self-Tanner

Finding the best self-tanner has proved to be my sun-obsessed solution. Luckily, the past few years have transformed the self-tanner industry into a certified skincare category. From skin-first formulas to BIPOC-led brands for darker skin tones, sunless tanner is no longer a guaranteed way to look orange on vacation. Instead, it’s our secret to glowing skin year-round. Which is why we’ve dug deep to discover the best self-tanners.

How to Choose the Best Self-Tanner

Raise your hand if you’ve ever been burned—maybe literally—by self-tanners. Thankfully these days, gems abound. To find the best of the best self-tanners, we went to the experts. Ahead, Sabrina Johnson, spray-tan stylist and founder of Everything Made For You, and Nichelle Temple, a celebrity esthetician and founder of Inderma Studio, dish on everything to know about shopping for and applying the best self-tanners. Let’s get glowing.

Benefits of Using Self-Tanner

Self-tanners combine the best of both worlds: glowy, natural color without compromising your skin health. On your body, a self-tanner can hide keratosis pilaris and hyperpigmentation like nothing else.

“Self-tanner and spray tans are not only a great solution to replace sitting in the sun, but they are also safer,” says Johnson. “You can achieve a natural glow without the risk of sun damage caused by UV radiation, which can cause skin cancer, premature aging, and hyperpigmentation.”

“It is the best solution if you like the look of a bronzed sun-kissed glow,” adds Temple, who notes formulas’ significant improvements and innovations over the past few years. “Luckily, self-tanners have come a long way in terms of application, scent, and longevity.”

The Myth of ‘Safe Tanning’

Any color is a sign of skin damage—disheartening, I know. Especially if you forgo sunscreen or use a lower SPF to deepen your shade. Temple warns against it, even in service of a tan. She encourages staying mindful of the following top summer skincare mistakes:

 • Not wearing sunscreen regularly
 • Forgetting to apply sunscreen on sensitive areas like ears, lips, back of the neck, and tops of feet and hands
 • Neglecting to reapply sunscreen
 • Not applying enough sunscreen

Some people also apply self-tanner, then forget additional sun protection. Don’t make that mistake. “Self-tanner will not provide any sun protection, so it is still important to protect the skin with sunscreen even if it looks like you have a ‘base tan.'”

Self Tanner vs. Salon Tanning

As a spray tan stylist, Johnson is an expert at giving clients the perfect glow in the salon. However, she notes that you can achieve a similar look at home.

“Self-tanners are considered a DIY application. You can apply them at home using various products like lotions, mousse, and serums. Self-tanners are generally less expensive, but results can vary based on product, and application may require trial and error for beginners.”

To get the salon-like glow at home, be sure to choose the right tanner for your skin type, skin color, and desired shade.

Unpacking Self-Tanner Ingredients

According to Temple, look for naturally derived dihydroxyacetone first. “This is the most popular ingredient. Some bonus ingredients would be a formula that is botanical-based and hydrating with aloe vera, glycerin, or jojoba to keep the skin moisturized.”

Johnson agrees. Get a self-tanner that can both hydrate and make your skin glow. Johnson also recommends antioxidants to give your skin a natural glow, too.

Look for these ingredients in your self-tanner:

 • Hyaluronic acid
 • Glycerin
 • Aloe vera
 • Vitamins A, C, and E
 • Antioxidants: (Niacinamide, Resveratrol, Coenzyme Q10, Ferulic acid, Copper, Zinc, Selenium)

To keep your glow going, avoid anything that will dry out your skin and undo your skin prep. Johnson advises: “Avoid self-tanners with harsh chemicals like parabens, sulfates, and phthalates.” Alcohol, which is found in many quick-drying formulas, can also be harmful, but it can exacerbate dryness and dehydration.

How to Make Your Self-Tanner Last Longer

“To get the most long-lasting and natural-looking tan, make sure you have exfoliated and moisturized the body before application,” advises Temple, explaining that you should prioritize areas like the elbows and knees.

Johnson also recommends a full skin-prep and self-tanner routine:

“The biggest mistake you can make when using self-tan is not prepping the skin. Skipping exfoliation can lead to uneven application and patchiness. Avoid chemical exfoliants like AHA, BHA, and retinol before and after tanning as they will make your tan fade faster.”

Remember: when it comes to applying product, less is more. As Johnson notes, you can always add another layer but you can’t stop the process once it’s applied. “During your first shower, only use lukewarm water, no soap, and make sure to get all the bronzer off, otherwise you might develop streaks.”

Lastly, hydration is key. Drink water and moisturize daily to maintain an even tan for as long as possible.

These days, you can find the right self-tanner for you without having to risk turning orange. “Each product offers different benefits, so consider your skin type, desired outcome, and any skin sensitivities when choosing a self-tanner,” says Johnson.

What does summer smell like to you? The salty sea air? Fresh, farmer’s market finds? Sunscreen? For me, it’s a blend of all these nostalgic, warm-weather scents. If you close your eyes, you can probably transport yourself back to summers past with just a whiff.

That’s because the part of your brain that processes memory is adjacent to the part that processes smell. If you take this a step further, you can hack this cognitive process by intentionally creating scent cues for yourself. Wearing a specific perfume to work, for example, will signal to your brain that it’s time to buckle down. (There’s a productivity hack the hustle-culture bros won’t tell you.)

How to Find Your Signature Summer Scent

As a self-professed reset obsessive, I do everything in my power to make every season (or era, if you will) feel brand new. This means switching up my daily routines, like my wardrobe, skincare, and my scent. When I feel a new season or vibe calling, I find a scent that matches it. And nothing pleases me more than switching over to my summer scents. I gravitate toward vanilla, and because I’m a summer baby, all the best summer fragrances make my rotation.

But with new boutique scent brands emerging daily—fighting with the classics for a place in my summer scent tapestry—I get overwhelmed by choice. To sift through the finely scented mist, I tapped Ines Guien, VP of Operations at Dossier, to help us pick the best summer fragrances.

Guien’s ultimate guidance? “Don’t be afraid to experiment!” Fragrance should be fun—just like summer!

Ines Guien

Ines Guien is the Vice President Of Global Operations at Dossier Perfumes. Prior to that, Guien was the Business Development Coordinator at Le Labo Fragrances.

What are the best scents for summer?

“I think everyone wants to be a more playful, lighter version of themselves in the summer months,” says Guien. The best summer fragrances embody this more carefree version—the one whose mind is on maximizing beach time, not managing mental lists.

From fun, flirty florals to sweet summer scents, there’s a signature fragrance for everyone. Even if you gravitate toward earthier, heavier scent profiles that thrive in the winter, Guien affirms: there’s a fragrance for you. “If you prefer deeper ‘winter’ scents, there’s nothing that says you can’t wear them year round!”

Making Sense of Scent Notes

It all begins with understanding scent notes. “The top notes are the initial scents you smell when you first apply. The middle notes or the heart notes, appear once the top notes have evaporated and last for several hours. Finally, the base notes are those final scents you smell and are the most long-lasting. Base notes provide depth and richness and help anchor the top and middle notes.”

For summer scents, look for lighter top notes balanced with earthier or richer base notes. “Once you understand these notes, you can choose fragrances that complement each other.” This will also help you as you experiment with layering scents.

Odette Annable

Some tried and true notes are consistent throughout many of the best summer fragrances, says Guien. “Most people tend to prefer lighter, fruitier, and sunny scents for summer to match the season,” she says. “They also gravitate toward fragrances with prominent notes of vanilla during the warmer months. We’ve also seen a resurgence in popularity of fruity and gourmand scents.”

Specific summer 2024 fragrance trends influence the summer scents du jour. “Over the past two years or so, we’ve seen genderless fragrances explode in popularity. Consumers no longer want to be bound by gendered scents when it comes to their perfumes.”

Tips for Finding Your Summer Fragrance

Summer scents should be personal. They should reflect your own intentions for the season. And you should be excited to spritz your skin in the morning. To figure out what scents fit you best, check for common ingredients in your favorite fragrances. My ideal situation is smelling like a bonfire and s’mores. That explains why all my summer scents contain vanilla, brown sugar, caramel, and something woody.

Experiment With Layering

Another way to create a new—or new-ish—summer scent is through layering. “Layering fragrances is a great way to create a signature scent that is unique to you,” says Guien. “The easiest way to layer scents is to mix complementary notes. For example, combine floral with fruity scents or a woody scent with a spicy one to create a complex and interesting scent.”

Pro-tip: like with skincare, go from lightest to heaviest. “Apply your fragrances lightest to strongest to ensure the fragrances blend well and last all day.”

Read the Label

“No matter your budget or scent preferences, always look for fragrances that are made with quality ingredients and follow the strictest guidelines,” says Guien. “At Dossier, we make all of our perfumes in Grasse, France with only the highest-quality ingredients. We also follow strict U.S. and U.E. guidelines to ensure our products are ethical, sustainable, and most importantly non-toxic.”
