According to experts, we spend about a third of our life sleeping. A lot of thought should go into purchasing a bed, but what about the sofa? It’s where we lounge during our waking hours, and it’s for afternoon naps or Saturday movie nights. Not to mention this large piece of furniture is a focal point of your living room. It has to be comfortable, yet stylish. And as someone who has lived in apartments all of her adult life—it needs to fit in your space. So what are the best couches for small spaces? I’ve done a deep dive, so you don’t have to.

The post Nancy Meyers’ Interiors Are Iconic—A Designer Shares How to Get the Look appeared first on Camille Styles.

Filmmaker and design icon Nancy Meyers famously told ELLE Decor in 2012 that she treats the homes in her movies like they’re main characters. Her interiors are an extension of her leading ladies in her films, and it’s clear that she puts an incredible amount of work into these homes which in reality, are just very well-dressed sound stages. It’s this thought and intention that makes them all the more impressive.

Bright, open kitchen

How to Bring the Nancy Meyers Aesthetic Home

It makes complete sense that “Nancy Meyers aesthetic” is trending. Who wouldn’t want to capture some of the joy and ease that her films evoke? I chatted with designer Joshua Smith and we did a deep dive into what we think people are really after when they say they want a Nancy Meyers interior—and how to achieve the look yourself.

Joshua Smith
Joshua Smith

After attending the New York School of Interior Design, Joshua Smith began his career under the guidance of Steven Gambrel. Going on to launch his own design firm in 2013, he was named a “rising star” and “one to watch” by House Beautiful magazine just over a year later. Over the years, Joshua has built an impressive portfolio ranging from modern sanctuaries to country estates.

There’s no arguing that Nancy Meyers interiors are universally loved. They’re cozy, warm, and we all want to jump through the screen to be in them ourselves, even though her film sets are completely different design styles. “All her interiors speak different languages, yet they all conjure the same feeling of I want to fall into that,” Smith says. It’s a retreat. There’s something about them that feels good. It doesn’t matter if the home is coastal, country, California, cottage, or traditional—what we get is Nancy Meyers cool. We all want a little bit of that in our lives—a feeling of je ne sais quoi she brings to all of her spaces.”

When we move beyond aesthetics, or what a home looks like, the appeal of Meyers’ interiors is very clear. Smith sees it when he’s working with design clients as well. “People don’t buy houses based on what they look like, but what they feel like,” he shares.

How do you get the Nancy Meyers aesthetic?

The Nancy Meyers aesthetic is more than a look—it’s a feeling. “I call it livable beauty,” Smith remarks. “You can have a space with a sofa, a coffee table, some chairs, and a rug that will be put together and styled, but it’s the layers that will make it feel like home. I think that’s what Nancy does so well.”

So what do layers in a home look like? “It’s the blankets in baskets, or the stack of books by the chair,” Smith says. “We think it’s the big stuff like the sofa that’s going to make a house a home, but it’s actually the sentimental item on the centerpiece of the coffee table that makes it interesting.”

Nancy Meyers interiors are beautiful, but she prioritizes emotional connection. The homes in her films are lived in, comfortable, and they reflect the personality of its occupants. So when it comes to recreating looks for yourself in your own home, imagine who you would be in a Nancy Meyers film. Truly! Who are you? How can your home be an extension of your wants and needs, as well as your personality and style? What’s important to you? And of course, when you step into your home, what do you want to feel?

If this sounds overwhelming or perhaps you just need a little guidance, I’ve rounded up a few favorite Nancy Meyers interiors, the feelings they evoke, and a little more about their particular design style. Check it out below!

The Hamptons Beach House In Something’s Gotta Give

If you want to feel: Energized, light, and ready to fall in love in a house by the sea (whether you actually are or not).

Then recreate: Diane Keaton’s beach home in Something’s Gotta Give

The vibe: Coastal Grandma, quintessential beach house charm

Diane Keaton’s character, Erica Barry, is the blueprint for Coastal Grandma aesthetic. She lives in a sprawling, beautiful beach house in the Hamptons. It’s drenched in blue and white, has rows and rows of books and features plush, overstuffed couches. It’s the perfect setting for a summer romance on the coast.

“It evokes the feeling of bright light, and we all crave that,” Smith says. There is a freshness that permeates the large, open living space of this iconic beach house and Smith says to be mindful of where in your own home you decide to recreate the look. “I always say there’s going to be one moody space in a home where you go and cocoon, and you’re not going to cocoon in the Something’s Gotta Give living room because it’s so bright!” Smith exclaims. “It’s so fresh, it’s light, and you’re going to feel great, vibrant, and energized in a space like that.”

Opt for a coastal living room or an office space that will no doubt keep you inspired. Erica Barry was a playwright after all, and her sprawling desk faced an enormous window, drenching her in sunlight.

The Cottage in The Holiday

If you want to feel: Curled up in cozy knits, sipping hot cocoa in the English countryside.

Then recreate: Kate Winslet’s cottage in The Holiday

The vibe: Cottagecore

If the Something’s Gotta Give beach house is bright and energizing, the Rosehill Cottage in The Holiday is on the other side of the design spectrum. “You want to cozy up and read a book in that house,” Smith says. “I want a mug of something, sleeves so long they cover my hands—it’s that kind of energy. It’s like a warm hug”

Recreating the Rosehill Cottage can be tricky, since so much of the charm of the home lies in the architecture that won’t be found in a newer home. The stone walls and wood beams add a ton of character to this cozy cottage, but that doesn’t mean you can’t evoke similar feelings yourself. Thrift chintzy, overstuffed armchairs and don’t be afraid to mismatch patterns. Use a tufted ottoman instead of a coffee table and go for a shabby chic look in your living room or bedroom. Estate sales are full of vintage pieces that would look adorable in a Rosehill Cottage-inspired room. If you find pieces that make you want to curl up with a good book, take that as a good sign!

Shop The Cottage Aesthetic

The California Mansion in The Holiday

If you want to feel: Cool, chic and put together.

Then recreate: Cameron Diaz’s home in The Holiday

The vibe: Contemporary California cool

Juxtaposing the cozy cottage in The Holiday was Cameron Diaz’s California mansion. When describing this home, Smith kept coming back to two words. “So cool, so modern,” he states. While not everyone can live in a mansion, there are ways to evoke similar feelings in your own home. “It’s very tailored. There’s a lot of white, no patterns in this home,” Smith observes. “It’s understated luxury.”

If you want to bring a California cool vibe into your own home, opt for white slip-covered furniture, simple seagrass rugs, and black accents. There are lots of plants and large open windows in this home, so adorn your own with plenty of greenery to add some vibrancy. Have lots of table lamps to give the space some warmth with lighting. Invite your neighbors over and share a meal, just like Iris did in the film.

The Father of the Bride House

If you want to feel: The joy and coziness of family living.

Then recreate: The Father of the Bride House

The vibe: Classic, traditional style

Father of the Bride fully romanticized suburban, family living to a T. Within the first few minutes of the film, you’re introduced to family man George Banks, who delivers a monologue about the love he has for his daughter, his family, and his house. There is such beautiful simplicity in the way he describes teaching his kids how to ride their bikes in the driveway and sleeping in tents in the backyard just for fun. If you want to engulf yourself in warm fuzzies, recreating the Father of the Bride house is a great place to start. “This house was the American dream. A picture perfect home,” Smith shares. “It’s layered with books in the bookcases, pictures in picture frames, and the key was that it wasn’t perfect. It screamed, it’s beautiful, we have kids, and we live here!”

The actual home is a classic Colonial, but creating the same vibe means to not take it too seriously. “With this home, and all Nancy Meyers interiors, you don’t feel like you’re going to mess it up. There’s something about it where you’re not afraid to set a drink down or put your feet up. It’s comfortable. It’s lived in,” Smith continues. To create a homey, cozy vibe in your own home, arrange living room furniture for conversation instead of TV watching, adorn your surfaces with framed family photos, add French doors, and make your backyard a place for dining and family activities.

Shop The Father of the Bride Aesthetic

The Kitchen in It’s Complicated

If you want to feel: Cozy in the kitchen, surrounded by loved ones and home-cooked meals.

Then recreate: Meryl Streep’s home in It’s Complicated

The vibe: California Spanish-Style Ranch with a gorgeous kitchen

The home in It’s Complicated does the same thing all Nancy Meyers’ interiors do without a hitch—it’s warm, inviting, and comfortable. What sets this home apart is the kitchen. Jane (played by Meryl Streep) owns a bakery, so of course the kitchen is the heart of her home. It’s where Streep sips wine with her girlfriends, it’s where her adult children gather as they raid her fridge, and it’s a spot for family meals. The kitchen is sophisticated without being overly fancy, and if you want to create the same vibe in your own home, there are a few things Smith suggests.

“Try a mix of open shelving and closed cabinets. Hang your pots on a rack. Create a space where you can actually sit down and have a meal. Life happens in the kitchen!” he says. These kitchen layers will add charm to your space, and may even make cooking easier with everything in reach. But most importantly, imagine your family or friends all gathering in your kitchen and ask yourself if everyone could be comfortable and happy in the space. Making this gathering place as special as it can be with cozy seating, food and drink is the goal.

Let’s face it: almost no one is actually excited about the prospect of packing moving boxes. I’m always eager to get settled into a new place (hello, endless decorating projects!). But as someone who lived in six different apartments throughout her twenties, I’ve never enjoyed the packing process itself. It’s mentally tiresome, physically demanding, and seems to drag on—no matter how early you begin.

A Professional Organizer Shares Her Best Packing Tips for Moving

Because of this, I’ve long been looking for tips on how to streamline the process and make packing for a move slightly less daunting. For answers, I turned to Jayna Lattimore, a professional organizer and the founder of Ordered, LLC, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Here, Lattimore shares how to make a move less stressful—thank goodness for these tips!

Jayna Lattimore
Jayna Lattimore

Jayna Lattimore, owner and lead organizer of Ordered, LLC began her professional organizing career in 2019. Over the past 4.5 years, she’s helped countless families and organized hundreds of spaces across Charlotte, NC and surrounding areas. Without judgment, she strives to motivate her clients to embrace a more organized lifestyle by cutting down the clutter and establishing beautiful and functional organizing systems.

Organized bookshelf

Don’t Make a Ton of Purchases Prior to Your Move

I began to cringe as I read this tip, as I’ve been majorly guilty of ordering everything from new furniture to coffee table books to kitchenware right before a move. I just couldn’t hold back since I was so excited to get decorating! But, Lattimore says, doing so will of course mean you have more to move to your new place, and your picks “may not align with the final setup and decor preferences in your new home.”

She adds, “Taking time to fully unpack and set up the new space allows for better decision-making regarding new furniture and decorations, preventing the hassle of returns and last-minute product research.”

I’ll be the first to admit that the cute little three drawer chest I just *had to have* for my NYC apartment didn’t look at all at home in my space once I’d moved everything else in. I ended up having to pay a hefty return fee to ship the piece back to the retailer I’d ordered it from. A pricey lesson to learn.

Don’t Wait to Prep for Your Move Until the Last Minute

Thankfully I’ve never been a procrastinator, but if you’re someone who feels that they work best under pressure, you may want to reconsider this outlook in the months leading up to your move. Yes, I said months—Lattimore recommends beginning to prep for a move two months before your lease kicks off.

First, make a to do list of pre-move tasks that you can begin to tackle over this period, such as, of course, booking your movers. Additionally, use this time to focus on one space or room at a time, Lattimore says, beginning with the spaces you use the least. “Clear out each room completely or do a deep sweep through everything, discarding items you won’t be taking to your new place,” she suggests. You’ll also want to assemble a donation box as well as make a list of what needs replacing once you’re settled into your new home.

Don’t Let Furniture For Sale Linger

I follow plenty of people on social media who post about furniture they’re looking to sell prior to a move, and in my opinion, some of these people just don’t know when to give it up and cut their losses! Posting daily for weeks on end just seems exhausting when you have so many other logistics to focus on.

Lattimore lives by a similar philosophy. “If you find items to sell, list them promptly and set a deadline for their sale,” she says. “If unsold by the deadline, consider donating to avoid unnecessary clutter.” Someone in need could greatly benefit from your generosity, and you’ll feel less overwhelmed by the presence of excess stuff in your home.

Declutter Thoughtfully

If decluttering isn’t your strong suit, Lattimore recommends asking yourself the following questions: Do I love it? Do I need it? Do I use it? Will there be space for it in my new place? She adds, “If the items don’t align with your identity and future aspirations, it’s best to part ways with them.”

Don’t Forget About Other Essential Tasks

The moving process isn’t just about packing all of your belongings into boxes—there are many logistical components that are just as key. Lattimore notes that people tend to forget about the following tasks until the last minute:

 • updating their mailing address (both by notifying the USPS as well as friends and family)
 • arranging for childcare or pet care the day of the move
 • canceling or transferring utilities
 • asking friends or family for day-of help.

Lattimore recommends taking care of this final to-do weeks in advance. “Moving is a big deal and incredibly exhausting,” she says. “No one wants to be hit with a last-minute request to help.”

Pack Like a Pro

Lattimore is full of useful packing tips that will make both the packing and unpacking process easier. Below are a few of her top suggestions:

 • Pack infrequently used items first. Think out-of-season clothes, holiday decorations, and the like.
 • Designate boxes for specific categories or rooms. It may take more time upfront but will help you in the long run, the organizer says. “Throwing different items in a box will create more of a hassle later when you’re unpacking.”
 • Pack heavier items on the bottom of the box. Then, cushion the top before sealing it, this will help when stacking boxes.
 • Label each box. A no brainer, but a necessary tip nonetheless!
 • Pack an overnight bag. This will come in handy the night you first settle into your home. “You’ll be glad you have a few changes of clothes and toiletries that you’ll need immediately, readily accessible without having to rummage through boxes,” Lattimore says.
 • Unpack one box at a time. Start with the most key rooms, like the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom.

Start Out on An Organized Foot

You’ve made the effort to be nice and organized during the packing process, so be sure to keep this going as you get settled. “It’s time to set up storage solutions,” Lattimore says. “Make sure they are functional for you.” Drawer organizers, bins, and baskets are your new BFFs, and labels are always great, too.

You will also want to maintain a regular chore schedule in your new place. “We recommend decluttering your home at least two to three times a year and as needed before holidays and special events throughout the year to make room for new purchases,” Lattimore says. “Establishing simple routines like 15 minutes each day to reset your home and sort through mail keeps things from piling up and remaining out of place for too long.”

The 13 Best Places to Buy Furniture Online

1. Casa Zuma

Best for: Woven pieces

If you adore wicker and woven furniture that adds a rustic elegance to your space, few retailers compare to Casa Zuma. Camille’s interior design company spent years developing this homeware brand, and while it’s best known for dinnerware and linens, the furniture options are growing every month.

2. AllModern

Best for: Bedroom furniture

Much like the brand’s name suggests, AllModern is THE place to shop for mid-century modern pieces ranging from chic leather beds and plush couches to beautifully designed wooden furnishings like tables and benches. Each design was inspired by the Bauhaus era (a German artistic movement from the early 1930s), and once you select your forever furnishings, the brand also offers free white glove delivery for stress-free assembly and placement in your home.

Camille always relies on Target for sleek, sturdy, and inexpensive furniture. Can you name another place where you can get a quality TV stand for under $200? Didn’t think so! The big-box retailer has a vast furniture selection online, ranging from end tables and accent chairs to beds, nightstands, and dressers. You don’t need to give up style or durability when shopping on a budget, and Target’s offerings prove it.

4. West Elm

The post The Cool Girl’s Guide to Shopping Estate Sales—Everything You Need to Know appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
Just a few weeks ago, I found myself in a small bedroom filled with ceramic swans. I was at an estate sale, and the woman who owned this home not only had a liking for romantic figurines, she also had a closet full of furs from Paris, lingerie slip dresses, and a vast collection of multi-colored glassware. The walls were full of regency-style art in ornate frames, and I was so close to taking one home—if only the price was right. (I wasn’t sure if I had a spot for it in my home anyway.) When it comes to estate sale tips for beginners, this is a risk you take. It’s very easy to fall in love with decor and furniture you simply can’t find anywhere else.

Estate sales have low-key become my entire personality. You can usually find me treasure hunting at these sales on Saturdays, but if it weren’t for an estate sale popping up in my neighborhood last year, I would have no idea what they are. These sales are fantastic for collectors, resellers, designers, really anyone looking for a bargain—and It girls in the making. I’ve run into so many cool girls on my estate sale adventures and we’re all on the hunt for vintage finds and one-of-a-kind items you can’t link on LTK.

If you’ve never been to an estate sale though, it can be intimidating. However, if you’re ready to start perusing these sales like a pro, I’ve rounded some of the best estate sale tips for beginners below!

Featured image from our interview with Claire Zinnecker, by Michelle Nash.

Zen, minimalist home.

What are estate sales?

First things first, what even is an estate sale? Estate sales typically occur on weekends in a person’s home, where nearly everything inside is for sale. Most of the time, these sales happen due to major life events like a big move, downsizing, or the death of a homeowner. The goal is to sell as much as possible in a short amount of time. These sales include a wide variety of items from clothing, furniture, home decor, jewelry, art and accessories.

Estate sales offer an opportunity to not only purchase incredible vintage pieces, but you also get to step inside someone else’s home. I’ve been to estate sales in mansions and homes that have gone seemingly untouched for decades. I’ve explored neighborhoods that never would have been on my radar without the sales themselves. In short, it’s fun! They’re truly a feast for the senses, even if you don’t end up purchasing anything.

Vintage glasses and cookbooks.

How do you find estate sales?

Perhaps the best estate sale tip for beginners is to bookmark Estatesales.net . This is the go-to spot for browsing estate sales, no matter where you live. You can find sales near you by searching your zip code or city. Once you see the results, you can tap on a sale you’re interested in and many sellers include preview pictures of items that will be for sale. Pro tip: sellers will usually wait to release the address of the sale until a day or two before, so don’t worry if it’s not posted right away.

Another way to stay up to date is social media. There are definitely content creators who share estate sales, and this is my favorite way to learn about sales near me. If you’re in the DC area, be sure to follow @maddytheb—she shares upcoming sales every Wednesday and even does video previews!

What should I know before I go?

Every estate sale is different, and each city surely has its own vibe, but I wish I had known a few things before my first shopping experience.

How to get in

Depending on the size of the sale, there may be a wait to go inside. In my city, most sales have a notepad by the door for you to sign in. You then wait until your name is called to enter the sale. It’s hard to know which sales will be popular, but from my experience, I know there will be a wait if the home is full of designer items. It’s also always helpful to check if there’s a list when you arrive, especially if there’s a long line. I’ve seen people get upset because they went straight to the back of the line without signing in first, which cost them valuable time. I should also note that if you see this happening, let them know to sign in!

Hold the snacks

Every time I head out to a sale, it’s so tempting to stop for a Starbucks beforehand! I always resist though, because food and drink is usually not allowed inside these sales. Also for what it’s worth, there are usually no public restrooms either. Leave your house with a full belly, and don’t forget to take a bathroom break!

Parking and accessibility

I always check in the listing if there are parking restrictions or notes on accessibility. I like knowing what the parking situation is in any event, but it’s especially helpful to know if there are neighborhood rules and regulations. (You don’t want to get towed!) Some listings will also note things like hills or stairs that are required to enter the home, which is important for anyone who may have specific accessibility needs. It’s good information to have if you plan on purchasing furniture or larger items as well.

Large item logistics

Every sale I’ve been to very clearly states the sellers will not help you move furniture or large items to your car. If you know you’d like to purchase a chair or sofa, be sure you shop with friends who can help you load it to your car! Estate sale companies can oftentimes recommend a moving service to assist you too. Since these sales are short, know that you have to get your purchases out of the house usually within 24 hours.

White minimalist living room.

Should I bring anything?

You don’t need much, but there are a few things you may want to have with you to set yourself up for estate sale success.

 • Multiple forms of payment. Payment is dependent on the company running the sale. Some may only take cash, while others take cards, Venmo, Cash App, etc. I always bring cash with me, just in case.
 • A tape measure. If you know you’re looking for furniture or art, know your measurements. All sales are final, so having a tape measure on hand can come in clutch. I’ve also measured my trunk, just to be sure my items will fit in the car!
 • Comfy clothes. So, to be honest, I don’t follow this rule all the time and have gotten a tiny bit dressed up for an estate sale run, just because it’s fun. But in general, you’re probably going to be in an environment where there’s dust, lots of people, and if it’s an older home, perhaps no air conditioning. You want to be able to move freely and comfortably!

What are some strategies for estate sale shopping?

Shopping strategy is dependent on whether you know what you want or if you’re simply perusing. Here are some beginner-friendly estate sale tips that work for both.

If you know what you want, act fast

If you have your eye on something specific, I recommend you shop early on the first day of the sale. That way, you will know for sure it’s available. Once you’re inside, find the item first so it doesn’t get scooped up by someone else. If you’re not sure where it is, ask someone who is running the sale. They’re there to help and can point you in the right direction.

Wait for deals until the last day

With each day that passes, many sales will discount all items in an effort to get them sold. You will get the best deals on the last day of the sale!

Hold onto items you like

If you’re simply browsing an estate sale, take your time and do a full walk-through of the entire house. If there are smaller items you like, hold on to them while you continue to browse. You can always put the items back, but hanging on to them ensures they’re yours.

Secure large items quickly

When it comes to furniture, most sales will have “sold” signs that can be placed on them when purchased. If you know you’d like to buy a piece of furniture, alert a sales associate. They can help, place a sold sign on your item, and you can then continue browsing at your leisure.

Use the hold table

Many sales have a hold table that is usually by the front door where you check out. You can place items here so you’re not carrying them around while you shop.

Are there rules or etiquette I should be aware of?

No need to be afraid here, estate sale etiquette is mostly common sense. Since you’ll be shopping in someone’s home, respecting the space is obviously important. Being kind and courteous to others is expected as well—don’t cut in line, don’t take other people’s items, avoid small spaces if there’s a crowd, etc. Long story short, just be kind to the space and to others.

What should I shop for?

What’s amazing about these sales are they’re each entirely unique and each shopper is unique as well. I personally love one-of-a-kind home decor items (I snagged two ceramic swans from the first sale mentioned!), frames, and art. I also bought a blue gingham wing-back chair that is straight out of a Nancy Meyers movie that I love and I’m on the hunt for an espresso machine.

I’ve seen shoppers leave with boxes of deeply discounted household items like detergent and all-purpose cleaners, vintage clothing, designer bags, costume jewelry, and bedding sets. One woman I met in line at the last sale I attended said she created an entire home gym from items she found at estate sales. The world is truly your oyster! The most important thing is to buy what you love. That’s the fun part about browsing estate sales, you never know what sort of treasures you’ll find.

An Actually Doable Guide to Decluttering Your Entire Home https://camillestyles.com/design/monthly-declutter/ https://camillestyles.com/design/monthly-declutter/#respond Sun, 21 Jul 2024 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=275106 5 tips for a fresh start

The post An Actually Doable Guide to Decluttering Your Entire Home appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
For my entire adult life, I’ve lived in various small apartments in big cities, and for the past three years, I’ve lived in the same 650-square-foot New York City apartment—a one-bedroom oasis that I truly love. I didn’t initially think that I would end up staying in this space for so long, but let’s face it: Moving is difficult and expensive. Plus, since I’ve customized my apartment to truly fit my needs and reflect my style, there’s no need for me to spread my wings and leave my little nest quite yet. One of the major reasons I’ve managed to not outgrow my small apartment? My regular monthly declutter sessions.

5 Tips to Help You Tackle a Monthly Declutter

I’ve always loved organizing—ever since I was a kid, I’ve taken great pleasure in tossing unnecessary items and leaving only the essentials behind. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m by no means a minimalist,—but everything in my apartment has its place and purpose. While I do have stacks of coffee table books and bins of decor that I’m holding onto for a bigger apartment sometime down the line, you’ll never find unnecessary “stuff” in my home. Here’s now I keep my space (and myself) chaos-free.

1. Choose a New Area of the Home to Focus on Each Month

It’s funny because my monthly declutter isn’t something that I schedule on a calendar or note down on a to-do list. Rather, it’s a process that I naturally feel inclined to engage in every few weeks. However, if decluttering doesn’t come as effortlessly to you, that’s more than ok.

Each month, choose an area to focus on specifically, whether that’s your medicine cabinet, makeup drawer, bar cart, junk drawer, etc. Spend time going through the items in this location and determine what you still use and will keep. Then, make a bag of things you can donate or give to friends and make another bag of items to toss or recycle. By focusing on just one drawer or bin each month, you won’t become overwhelmed or make hasty decisions.

2. Don’t Let Donations Linger

Luckily, my apartment is located right near some great thrift stores where I can easily drop off items I’m ready to part with post-monthly declutter. Make sure that you, too, are efficient about discarding unnecessary goods so that your entryway doesn’t become overwhelmed by reusable bags that you’ve been meaning to take to Goodwill.

I love to thrift, so dropping off donations also comes with the promise that I can browse for new-to-me items. Yes, this may seem counterintuitive, but honestly, I find that after a cleanout I’m more judicious about what I choose to bring home, since I’m still riding that clutter-free high.

3. Tackle Cleanouts in Small Increments

There’s no need to completely overturn your schedule to fit in a monthly declutter. Some of my most productive monthly cleanouts have taken place when I’ve had a free 30 minutes during the work day and need a bit of a distraction from looking at my screens.

Don’t assume that you need to devote more than a half hour to an organization task. You’ll feel more productive if you can squeeze a quick drawer cleanout into your regular daily schedule. Of course, an area like your closet will require more availability—save that for a weekend!

Whimsical bird-wallpapered bedroom.

4. Ask Yourself If You’d Keep Something If You Moved

For a while earlier this year, I was toying with the idea of moving apartments, and that made me become extra strict with myself during my cleanouts about what I felt was worth holding onto. While I’ve decided to renew my lease for an additional year, I still find myself thinking seriously about whether I’d really want to carry (or pay a mover to carry!) yet another box of coffee table books (which are my biggest vice!) into a future apartment.

Just as you might ask yourself if you really need that final cocktail when you’re out at a bar, make an effort to also ask yourself during your next decluttering spree whether you really need that extra cookbook or vase or tablecloth—whatever—or if it can instead go into the donation bin. After some time, this will become a habit!

5. Host a Mini Sale

Earlier this summer, a fellow collector friend of mine teamed up with me to host a mini yard sale in our other friend’s basement, and it was such a hit! It may sound cheesy, but it brought me so much joy to see other people enthusiastically pick up books I hadn’t touched in years or swoon over accessories that were begging to be displayed in a new home. Additionally, making a little (actually, quite a bit!) of extra cash didn’t hurt. Just be sure that you spend it on something intentional rather than going on a post-sale shopping spree.

Final Thoughts

Need a little more inspo? I’m always motivated to get decluttering after watching some of my favorite creators’ “Sunday reset” videos on TikTok. While these are much larger cleaning sessions, they’re definitely inspiring and will have you realizing how quickly you can tackle that pesky drawer that’s been nagging you for months. Highly recommend!

If I had to pick one single, solitary rule for my home, it would be to banish overhead lighting. It’s harsh, reminiscent of a doctor’s office, and lacks any sort of warmth or coziness. Not to mention this light can make you look like a spooky ghost, thanks to the shadows it casts over your head. In other words, not cute.

15 Home Lighting Ideas to Brighten Your Space

Interior lighting trends in 2024 aim for a soft glow, no matter what room you decide to be in. Layered lighting, or using different light sources in one space, is in. Switching up decor and furniture is, of course, one way to refresh your space, but lighting can completely transform the vibe and not be overlooked. If you’re curious about infusing your space with a new, cozy ambience—check out these home lighting ideas, room by room.

Kitchen

Camille Styles kitchen with pendant lighting.

Pendant lighting

Pendant lighting is not a new home lighting idea—you almost always see them over a kitchen island. But this year, opting for a pendant light with personality is definitely the way to go. In 2024, sculptural statement pieces, oversized pendants, woven materials (hello rattan!) and retro style lighting fixtures are all trending. Not sure what style to embrace? The beauty of pendants is that they’re easy to install and uninstall, so they can change just as simply as your style evolves.

Small table lamps

Placing a small lamp on your kitchen counter is not only adorable, but the light is great too. A mini lamp can be plugged in, or you could opt for a battery operated lamp as well. I have one from Target tucked into a corner of my kitchen, equipped with a Smart bulb that automatically turns on at sunrise every morning. The soft glow from the lamp is so much nicer than the bright, overhead light my kitchen came equipped with—especially early in the morning. There’s nothing like the cozy glow of a mini lamp when I’m making my morning coffee, or whipping up some pre-workout before I head to the gym.

Another plus? Mini lamps don’t have to be expensive. Just be sure to place them in a spot where they won’t be splattered with food while cooking or preparing!

Toe kick lighting

Toe kick lights are ideal for late night snackers or very early risers. These lights can be installed at the bottom of your kitchen cabinets, illuminating the floor so you can see where you’re going without turning on a larger, harsher light. Filling your water before going back to bed just got a lot more pleasant! You can install this yourself with a strip of LED lights with an adhesive backing.

Backyard

Camille Styles' backyard

Cordless table lamps

I’ve been seeing mini cordless table lamps all over my social media, and they’re always part of outdoor tablescapes. These mini lamps are battery operated and adorable, and most have brightness settings that can be switched just by tapping the base of the lamp. They emit a soft and subtle glow and create a cozy ambience, just like a restaurant would. Think of it like a candle at the center of your table, it’s just a mini lamp instead!

String lights

There’s nothing more charming than strings of lights overhead as you lounge outdoors. Transform your outdoor space with LED string lights. Be generous and include as many as you like—let it be your only source of outdoor lighting. Solar-powered LED string lights are also a great home lighting idea, especially if you live somewhere with reliable sun. They don’t need to be plugged in and you don’t even need to turn them off and on. I have a string or two on my balcony and they create a magical vibe, even just by admiring them indoors.

Pathway lights

Not only are pathway lights beautiful, but they are also great for safety reasons. Dot your backyard paths with lights so you and your guests can see where they’re going. You could even get Smart pathway lights with motion sensors for both safety and energy efficiency. More and more, we’re seeing homeowners put just as much effort into their outdoor spaces as their indoor ones, and pathway lights can guide you into your own little backyard oasis.

Bathroom

Molly Madifs bathroom

Backlit mirrors

There are many home lighting ideas for the bathroom, but one that’s making waves this year are illuminated bathroom mirrors. Backlit mirrors cast light evenly throughout your entire face, making make-up application easy, not to mention a very accurate reflection of yourself. These mirrors come equipped with lights that surround the perimeter, and they give the entire bathroom a polished and unique look.

Statement chandeliers

If you think chandeliers are reserved only for entryways and dining rooms—think again. These statement lighting fixtures are now making their way into bathrooms. Is there anything more chic than a chandelier over a soaking tub? Be sure to install them with warm white bulbs and even better if they can be on a dimmer as well!

Living room inspired lighting

Ever since the pandemic, bathrooms are becoming cozier and cozier. Creating a spa-like environment is top of mind for many. Now we’re seeing bathrooms become even more welcoming with lighting you traditionally see in a living room. Think table lamps on counters and vanities, and pretty pendants and sconces. Don’t be afraid to lean into your creativity and layer lighting so the bathroom becomes a place you want to spend time in. It’s so much easier to romanticize your morning routine when you’re surrounded with soft light!

Living Room

Camille Styles living room.

Sculptural floor lamps

Living room home lighting ideas include a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting throughout your space. Floor lamps are wonderful for living rooms, and they make a statement whether they’re on or off. Going for a sculptural floor lamp will create a statement, while also providing cozy light, making your living room all the more inviting.

Table lamps

Instead of relying on one large overhead light, a small collection of table lamps will create a warm and inviting environment. Place them on side tables or nearby cabinets and definitely include one in a reading nook or cozy corner. The gentle, soothing light is ideal for relaxing, lounging, and chatting with friends—perfect for a living room.

Gallery lighting fixtures can go above your framed art, offering a subtle glow to your beloved pieces. Using light to highlight certain design aspects of your home can help draw attention to specific spaces. In addition to art, picture lights are great on top of bookshelves or in place of where you’d put a sconce.

Bedroom

Sconces

Home lighting ideas for the bedroom are all about creating a calm environment. Layered light is key, and scones over nightstands create a cozy, ambient light that’s perfect for bedtime. Sconces mount on the wall and are ideal if you’d like a little more space on the surface of your nightstand. Choose a sconce over a bedside table lamp to maximize space and embrace your own personal style too.

Salt lamps

Himalayan salt lamps emit a warm, subtle glow that is perfect for bedtime. Soft, warm light can help you relax and unwind from the day—all while promoting a good night’s rest. They look gorgeous resting on a dresser or a nightstand, or if you prefer, they even have salt lamp nightlights and bulbs.

Headboard lighting

Ambient light at the back of your headboard? Yes, please! Last year, Sleep Number rolled out beds that included lighting features built in, like reading lights and headboard lights. You can adjust how bright the headboard lights are so you can unwind and even wake up with ease. The lights are at the back end of the headboard, so light emits on the wall behind, creating a cozy effect. If you’re not in the market for a new headboard, installing LED strip lights can also give you a similar effect!

For me, travel is the ultimate way to unlock inspiration. Shifting my environment and immersing myself in an entirely different culture helps me see the world through a new lens. When I return home, I’m energized and excited to incorporate a fresh aesthetic into my space. And my family’s recent trip to Ibiza achieved exactly that. The sun-bleached color palette, works by Spanish abstract expressionists, and vibrant beaches—all of it was a feast for the senses. It was the exact creative inspiration I was craving. And, I got to put it into play as I curated my new Rare Editions Collection collaboration with Minted.

I approach design with the idea that whatever I bring into my home should be beautiful, functional, and meaningful. (It’s ideal if I can check all three boxes.) Minted’s Rare Editions Collection aligns perfectly with that approach. As a capsule collection with a limited run of one-of-a-kind works, Minted makes it simple to curate a narrative of purpose, connection, and beauty through art.

And though decorating with art is an easy and impactful way to elevate your home, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure you create exactly the right look for you. Ahead, I’m diving into tips and tricks for sourcing meaningful art and how to style it in your home. Be sure to read to the end, where I’m diving into all my favorite pieces from Minted’s Rare Editions Collection and the inspiring stories behind the works.

How to Source Meaningful Art

I get it: shopping for art can be intimidating. So many of us often get bogged down by the question of whether or not something’s “good.” PSA: That’s entirely subjective—and up to you to decide. To source and shop for art that adds character to my home and infuses my walls with personality, I lean into my intuition to guide the way. I’m sharing my process and tips below for finding the perfect pieces for your space.

 1. Practice patience. Finding the right piece takes time. Full stop. When you have blank walls staring you in the face, it can be tempting to pick up any old piece. But finding meaningful art shouldn’t be seen as a means to an end. Instead, embrace the process. Art is a beautiful opportunity to express your tastes—allow yourself to lean into that journey of discovery and the creativity you’ll explore along the way.
 2. Trust your gut. Again, it comes back to your intuition. We can spend so much time questioning the purpose or meaning of a piece when instead, it’s often as simple as noticing how it makes you feel. Does it captivate you, stir up emotion, or spark inspiration? If so, take that as a sign to follow.
 3. Reflect on the emotions a piece evokes. As they say: when you know, you know. When I come across a work that I can’t get out of my head, I take that as a sign. If you love the piece on its own, think about how much joy it’ll bring you every time you see it in your home.

Tips for Styling Art in Your Home

Remember: your home is a reflection not only of your unique taste but the experiences you’ve amassed over the years. When styling art, I’m always after a look that feels dynamic and layered but complementary and harmonious to the rest of my home. It’s a balance of making a statement with bold pieces and paring back to create intimate vignettes. These are my go-to tips for styling art in your home.

Use a cohesive color palette as your foundation

Who doesn’t love a mood board? Before taking on any project, I like to first develop a look and feel. To do this, I start with a few words that represent the ultimate look I want to achieve. When it came to curating my Rare Editions Collection with Minted, I wanted the pieces to reflect a sun-bleached palette, leaning into shapes inspired by sensual curves and terra cotta.

From there, I gathered images that represented these words and composed them into a mood board. (See image above.) Think of it as a road map to provide further insight into the pieces you select—and how you’ll style them in your home.

Nope, it’s not just a fleeting trend of the 2010s. Gallery walls let you be playful with your styling, and the best balance a pull toward maximalism with a cohesive, grounding feel. I also love that gallery walls let you incorporate both beautiful pieces and those that might lean more nostalgic (such as family photos). Again, this is where your mood board will be important—because you’ll be styling several pieces in one space, it can become cluttered quickly. Remember the look you want to achieve and let that lead the way.

Create a focal point

Much of styling art depends on your ability to capture the eye and focus the gaze. If you’ve been here for a while, you’ll know I love hanging large statement pieces above my living room fireplace or over my bed. (Peep my house tour for a visual.) Because of the size and scale, whatever piece you select will influence the feel of your space—creating impact while still feeling streamlined.

Go beyond the wall

This is one of my favorite styling tricks. So often, we think art belongs exclusively on our walls, but it can be fun and give a fresh feel to your space to hang or lean art in unexpected ways. Y’all know I love a styled bookshelf moment, and layering smaller pieces alongside decorative objects (such as bowls, vases, and books) is a simple way to add character and interest. You can also prop pieces up on the mantel or lean it against a shelf in the kitchen. And don’t be afraid to hang art in unexpected places. Anything from the laundry room to the guest bath are all fair game.

My Rare Editions Collection for Minted

And now, let’s dive into my Rare Editions Collection with Minted! As a brand dedicated to showcasing innovative work by independent artists all over the world, teaming up with Minted was the perfect way to bring resonant, meaningful pieces to my home—and share these works with you.

What makes this collection so special, beyond the stunning works themselves? To start, each piece is part of a limited run, meaning that you’re one of only five people with the work in your home. What’s more, they each feature the artist’s signature in graphite pencil and are uniquely numbered. Lastly, I love how much care and attention was given to the framing. Each work features a handmade frame selected in a finish that best complements the piece.

All of these elements come together to create a thoughtful, considered collection that honors the intention woven into each of the works. Ahead, learn more about the pieces I selected for my capsule collection as well as the inspiring stories behind the artists who created them.

Ilana Greenberg

Brooklyn-based painter, illustrator, and graphic designer Ilana Greenberg pairs minimal, clean forms with nods to imperfection. She describes her work as urban vintage, culling inspiration from mid-century artists as well as her surrounding environment.

The Work: Perfect Composition

I immediately connected with this piece’s emphasis on black and white sensual shapes. My office was the perfect place to house it—contrasting the painting’s bold, geometric forms with the room’s softer palette.

Kamala Nahas

Based in Southern California, Kamala Nahas has always connected with photography’s ability to capture perspective and represent our experience. She excels in spontaneous compositions, responding to her senses and emotions to construct a moment. Rather than documenting a place, she sets out to capture its essence and how its elements makes her feel.

The Work: Twilight Palms

Kamala’s process in capturing this photograph speaks to the care and consideration she gives all of her work. She first took the image using a 1970’s era Polaroid SX-70 instant camera. Then, she gently separated the photograph’s layers by hand to reveal the image within. Using water again, she transferred the thin emulsion to heavy cotton fine art paper and finished it with a UV resistant varnish. For Kamala, it’s evident that the exploration and experimentation inherent in creating a piece is just as exciting as the final, visual result.

This piece’s smaller dimension lends itself well to an intimate corner. I hung it next to the window to complement the soft sunlight trickling through the curtains, and placing it above a rubber plant further emphasizes its verdant, nature-driven feel.

Seashore Findings by Bethania Lima

Bethania Lima

Brazilian surface designer Bethania Lima is passionate about pattern, color, and design. Having lived in Chile for the past decade, she recently relocated to Uruguay. She’s currently exploring the ups and downs of a freelance career, attributing much of her success to the loving support of family and friends.

The Work: Seashore Findings

I saw a Matisse exhibit a few months back that showcased many of his cutouts. I immediately fell in love with the organic shapes and vibrant colors. This piece resonated with me in the same way, drawing me in through its layered hues and varied, but harmonious forms. I propped it up on my living room bookshelf to infuse a little color into the space and to play up the patina of my favorite clay vessels and vases.

What We Will Become by Jennifer Daily

Jennifer Daily

Jennifer Daily has been painting and designing since she was a teenager. Now, with a degree in Graphic Design, she creates pieces that draw inspiration from the Bay Area’s vibrant cultures and varied climates. Her pieces lean on simplified forms and neutral color palettes to communicate her push for fewer distractions in both her art and life.

The Work: What We Will Become

“A life can be seen as the process of unfolding,” Jennifer writes. Moment to moment, we surprise ourselves by all there is to discover along the path of growth. This is how Jennifer approaches every work—asking “what if” to drive at new desires, new paintings, and new ways of being. I hung this in the corner of our bedroom to echo the soft, light wood of the bed frame. It has a calming and grounding effect that’s exactly the vibe I’m going for.

Caryn Owen

Caryn Owen is an inspiring multi-hyphenate, having balanced her art with motherhood and a career as a marine biology professor for years. Based in Santa Cruz, California, Caryn left the field in 2014 when she dove into art full-time. Specializing in acrylic paint on canvas, Caryn focuses her work on abstract landscapes and botanicals as well as pure abstract expressionist paintings that explore the boundaries of color.

The Work: Santa Cruz Seascape

This vibrant abstract landscape is painted on stretched canvas, connecting the viewer to the energetic quality of Northern California’s coast. As a self-professed colorist, Caryn seeks to represent the intensity of color in lieu of literal forms. I immediately connected with this piece’s layered colors—a reminder that nature is often more layered and contains greater depth than we initially see.

When it comes to design styles, I don’t like to be boxed into just one. Perhaps it’s my Gemini sun, but I like it when I can embrace all the interior styles I love. My living room leans coastal, my office is ultra feminine, and I’m currently planning the cottagecore bedroom of my dreams.

8 Dreamy Bedroom Styles to Transform Your Space

For the longest time, I put my bedroom design plans to the side, since it’s a space that guests don’t really spend time in. But I can see now that creating a calm, serene bedroom is intimate and lovely—and I wish I hadn’t put it off. It’s been fun exploring different bedroom styles to see what fits. If you want to discover your own bedroom style, or you want to give your bedroom a whole new aesthetic, read on for all the inspo.

Cottagecore

If you find yourself daydreaming about running away to the countryside, the cottagecore aesthetic will be right up your alley. A cottagecore bedroom is cozy, simple, and inviting—think vintage furniture, lots of florals, wood, stone, and anything that reminds you of sunny, bucolic bliss. Keeping your color palette soft with pastels and warm neutrals will help set the tone for a calm and relaxing space. Nature-inspired accents like potted plants and flowers are also a must!

Coastal

Who doesn’t want to live close to the water? Luckily you can bring the beach vibes to you, no matter where you live. A coastal-inspired bedroom includes crisp whites, soft blues and greens, woven furniture, and nautical accents. This bedroom style evokes a calm and serene beach-like ambience all year long. Bonus points if you have large, open windows and tons of sunshine. Gauzy curtains can add to the relaxed vibe of your space, especially if there’s a light breeze outside. All you need are ocean sounds and you’ll be transported to the seaside for the sweetest of dreams.

Farmhouse

Farmhouse interiors continue to be wildly popular. It’s hard not to fall for its rustic charm! Opt for wood furniture, black chandeliers, and a neutral color palette if you love this bedroom style. Farmhouse blends both old and new together seamlessly. Incorporating vintage and handcrafted items like quilts or other textiles is a fantastic way to personalize your bedroom and make it extra cozy, all while leaning into the farmhouse aesthetic.

Minimalist

Neutrals reign supreme in a minimalist bedroom. Even if the rest of your home is filled with color and pattern, a minimalist bedroom might be exactly what you need when it comes to a good night’s rest. This bedroom style is easy on your nervous system—whites, creams, and taupes keep everything simple and relaxed. To keep a minimalist bedroom balanced, be sure you’re finding a variety of textures and contrast in your textiles. Embrace different hues of the simple, yet beautiful, neutral color palette as well.

Pro tip: To really embody the minimalist style, keep your phone out of the bedroom. A distraction-free bedroom will make falling asleep that much easier, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t kick your phone out sooner.

Maximalist

Maximalism has been trending all year. This bedroom style is all about bold, eclectic decor, colors, and patterns. It’s highly individualized, and really about decorating with whatever brings you the most joy. Look for unique art, elaborate bedding, and interesting decor pieces to make your bedroom your own, personalized retreat. One specific maximalist trend I’ve been loving is pattern drenching, or adorning your room with a single pattern, top to bottom. This trend embraces a matchy-matchy vibe—why not have your wallpaper, drapes and bedding all go together? It’s a fun way to feel cocooned in your own personal style.

Whimsical

If you love bright color palettes, decor that makes you smile, and pieces that are just plain fun—your aesthetic is whimsical. There’s a sense of playfulness to these spaces, making this a perfect bedroom style if you want your room to feel magical and inspiring. Don’t hesitate to buy quirky furniture (the strawberry side table I keep seeing on TikTok comes to mind!), hang fairy lights from the ceiling, or splurge on the canopy bed that makes you feel like a queen.

Moody

Rich color palettes, atmospheric lighting, and a taste for sophistication are what moody bedrooms are made from. Deeper hues like black, navy, and burgundy are go-to’s for this bedroom style. While some might prefer a lighter, brighter color palette, others crave the cozy, intimate atmosphere a darker room creates. Painting the walls will instantly switch up the vibe in your moody bedroom. Opt for a large piece of art with colors that match your nightstands or pillows to create a balanced space.

Japandi

There’s a lot of beauty in simplicity, and this bedroom style oozes peace and tranquility.

Japandi is a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design aesthetics. Imagine if hygge (the Scandinavian practice of embracing all things cozy) and wabi-sabi (the ancient Japanese philosophy of contented slow living) joined forces to create the ultimate relaxed environment and you have Japandi. Known for its clean lines, natural textures and neutral color palette, it’s a perfect bedroom style to try if you’re looking for some zen.

Choose white and cream linens, keep a sprig of something green like eucalyptus on your nightstand, and keep your space a clutter-free zone. This will result in a peaceful and inviting bedroom that will make you want to curl up and catch up on some zzz’s.

The post Yes, You Need an Electric Kettle—These Are the Undisputed Best appeared first on Camille Styles.

There was a time in my life when I didn’t understand the hype behind an electric kettle. Even in the colder months, Austin’s weather often has me opting for a green smoothie in lieu of a latte or tea. How to Pick an Electric Kettle

There are a couple of important elements to consider when selecting the best electric kettle. As one beverage drinker’s needs may be different than another’s, we’ve laid out the top three things you should consider before making your purchase.

Kettle Capacity

How much water are you planning on heating up? Do you drink several cups of coffee or tea? Capacity is one of the most important factors to take into consideration when choosing your perfect electric kettle. You may want to stick to a capacity of around 1.5-1.7L or more if you’re brewing for 2+ people, whereas you can most likely get by with a capacity of one liter or less if you’re aiming for 1-2 cups of your drink of choice.

Temperature Control and Boiling Speed

If you’re seeking out a kettle that can reach an exact temperature, you may need to opt for a more expensive model. But if you’re simply looking for a kettle that can keep water hot, then you may be able to find a more generic electric kettle.

Additionally, the speed at which water can heat up is a factor to consider in your selection process. If you find yourself short on time (or simply a lack of patience) when brewing your bev, look for a quick-heating electric kettle as opposed to one with a more lengthy heat time.

Selecting Your Spout

How fast or slow your water pours from the electric kettle depends on the spout size and length. If you’re looking for a slower and more precise pour, typically a long, tapered or gooseneck spout is the best option. This can also prevent spills and splashes of hot water that escape from your kettle. If you’d rather have a larger and faster pour, select a spout with a wide and short opening.

Designers Predict the Next “It” Kitchen Cabinet Color https://camillestyles.com/design/kitchen-cabinet-paint-colors/ https://camillestyles.com/design/kitchen-cabinet-paint-colors/#respond Mon, 24 Jun 2024 10:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=272427 Brb, remodeling.

The post Designers Predict the Next “It” Kitchen Cabinet Color appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
There’s no denying that sage kitchen cabinets are having a moment (and have been for a while). From Anne Hathaway’s rustic kitchen to Reese Witherspoon’s farmhouse-inspired kitchen, seemingly everyone is opting for cabinets in the light green hue. While we’re also fans of the popular shade, we can’t help but wonder: What is the next “it” kitchen cabinet color going to be?

To find out, we asked four interior designers to predict which kitchen cabinet paint colors we’re about to see everywhere. From subtle neutrals to bold hues, the pros’ picks cover a spectrum of shades. Whether you’re looking to give your space a quick refresh or a major overhaul, keep scrolling to see which kitchen cabinet paint colors are poised to replace sage as the next big thing.

Stefani Stein Loloi Kitchen

Soft, Grey-Green

Neutrals are here to stay, but designers aren’t turning to traditional shades of white and grey. “While white kitchen cabinets have been out of favor for a while, many people aren’t ready to commit to bold or saturated hues,” explains Los Angeles-based interior designer Stefani Stein. Instead, she says it’s all about subtle shades that boast a hint of color.

She predicts soft, grey-green in particular, will be a welcome alternative to classic neutral shades. “I have been gravitating toward tints that introduce a hint of color, but still invoke a calm, classic vibe,” divulges Stein. “One of my absolute favorites is Mizzle by Farrow & Ball,” she tells us. “It’s a lovely, soft grey-green, reminiscent of celadon glazed pottery.”

Cool Mist Grey Kitchen

Cool, Mist Grey

Similarly, Delaware-based interior designer Katie Winnington of C&E Furniture and Design has been enamored with cool grey as an alternative to classic neutral hues. Her “current obsession is Sherwin Williams Gossamer Veil,” she tells us. “This shade brings a slight earth tone element from the traditional grey or beige and accents brass hardware beautifully,” she says.

It’s also a hue with potential staying power, according to Winnington. “The shade is also timeless, so it has longevity and is not heavily trend-driven, giving you space to play with accenting other hardware types or countertop finishes,” she explains. “Avoid contrasting Gossamer Veil with light colors too much as the cabinets will get lost,” she advises.

White oak kitchen cabinet paint.

White Oak

Buh-bye, dark stains. A lighter, more minimalist material is emerging as a new favorite among interior designers. Leanne Ford says she’s partial to white oak, but only when done right. “Historically, the problem with white oak cabinets has been that their most beautiful state is when they’re in their natural, untouched form but then they turn yellow and orange when sealed,” the designer explains.

Ford recently partnered with Semihandmade to release a line of cabinets, and she says they managed to solve this yellow-orange dilemma. “We came up with, dare I say, the perfect ‘recipe’ for sealing white oak cabinets in a way that doesn’t alter but preserves all their natural beauty,” she explains. The option to pair them with IKEA cabinetry makes them a great affordable alternative to custom wood cabinets.

Bold Rich Green Painted Kitchen Cabinets

Bold, Rich Green

“Color is back in a major way and here to stay,” predicts Los Angeles-based interior designer Kerry Vasquez, breaking with the minimalist trend. Her pick for the next “it” kitchen cabinet color is “a rich green like Benjamin Moore’s Essex Green,” she tells us. “This green is bold yet grounding, sophisticated yet playful,” she says. It’s “bold enough to feel colorful yet subtle enough that it doesn’t overwhelm you,” she explains.

“If you go bold with the kitchen cabinet color, my recommendation for styling would be to keep everything else relatively neutral,” she offers. “However, you can still use color and keep it neutral! Think light pinks, wood tones, and terracottas.”

Finding the best white curtains for a space is easier said than done. It involves navigating a sea of inconspicuously named shades of white (think: ivory, bone, pure white, off-white), considering weight (how sheer is too sheer?), and selecting a perfect length that hits a Goldilocks ideal of being both not too short, but also not too long.

Camille Styles home tour white curtains.

The Best White Curtains, According to Designers

The stakes for getting it right are surprisingly high. The ideal white curtains will make your space feel bright and inviting versus smaller and darker than it actually is. To help narrow the search, we asked some of our favorite interior designers to tell us which white curtains they buy over and over again. And they did not disappoint.

Keep scrolling to find out which white curtains get the pros’ stamp of approval.

Kerry Vasquez Sara Tramp home with white curtains.

Restoration Hardware Italian Textured Weave Drapes in White

Los Angeles-based interior designer Kerry Vasquez swears by pleated white curtains from Restoration Hardware. “The quality is top-notch, the weight of the curtain is sumptuous, and the way the curtain falls is just right,” she explains.

“I am a big fan of contrast, so when hanging white curtains I usually opt for black wrought iron hardware like the Antique Bronze Hardware Collection at Pottery Barn,” she adds. “I am also a fan of hanging curtain rods closer to the ceiling than the window if space permits!”

One mistake Vasquez sees too often is people buying curtains in the wrong size. “Many times, clients end up getting curtains that are too small and make the room and windows appear smaller than they actually are,” the designer explains. When in doubt, opt for the longer version.

Shaun Crha Charlotte Lea Photography

Everhem Drapes in Bone Essentials with a Pinch Pleat

If you’re ready to ditch those IKEA curtains you’ve had forever, Shaun Crha, principal designer and founder of Wrested Interiors, recommends opting for custom drapes. “Everhem is fantastic for upgrading from the big box store curtains since they make it so easy to get all the measurements and proportions right,” he says. “My go-to is their bone fabric with a pinch pleat.”

According to Crha, one add-on is 100% worth the extra money. “I always recommend getting lined panels if you want them to last longer because exposure to UV light really takes a toll on fabric,” advises the designer. Especially if you’re hanging curtains in a sun-drenched dining room, like the one pictured here, or a living room that gets an exceptional amount of light.

Hot tip: If you’re hanging curtains in your bedroom, Crha recommends a tried-and-true installation technique. “Try a French return rod if you like a classic look and you want to stop that stream of light from hitting you in the face when you want to sleep in,” he says.

Isabella-Patrick-Shannon-Dupre home with white curtains.

Pottery Barn Custom Emery Linen Curtain in Ivory

Designer Isabella Patrick recently purchased these ivory curtains for a client who didn’t want to spend a ton on custom shades for her rental apartment. When it comes to selecting the right white curtains, Patrick recommends considering the undertones of the shade and keeping your space’s entire color palette top of mind. “This Pottery Barn option—when properly installed and styled—lifts up the room and lends to the whole upscale and warm vibe,” she tells us.

So, how do you properly install curtains? “A good rule for hanging is to install the hardware wider than the frame of the window, and don’t be afraid to go way beyond the window frame to create the illusion of a bigger window,” explains the designer. “The same goes for hanging height. You can go a few inches—or more—above your window frame to create that larger window illusion, but also to offset a ready-made curtain length that may be too long.”

Becky Shea Jake Shea dining room with white curtains.

The Shade Store Ripple Fold Drapery in White Linen

New York-based interior designer Becky Shea is partial to white linen curtains from The Shade Store. But in a very particular style. “My absolute favorite drapery style, without a doubt, is the ripple fold drape,” reveals Shea. “The cascading folds of a ripple fold drape embody timeless, quiet luxury.”

She also advises hanging curtains so they create a ¼-inch puddle on the floor. “It lends the drapery a more sophisticated look and feel,” she explains. “My biggest no-no is hanging drapery at the trim of a window or above the floor—never, ever do this. At a minimum, the drapery should kiss the floor, and ideally, it should puddle ever so slightly.”

Threshold™ Light Filtering Farrah Window Curtain Panel

“I’ve purchased an embarrassing amount of curtains over the years in my quest to find the perfect style, and I think I finally found ‘the one,’” says Carrie Waller of her go-to white curtains. One major selling point for Waller is that they’re sheer, but not too sheer. “These lightweight curtain panels look opaque but allow just the right amount of light to filter beautifully through,” the founder of Dream Green DIY explains.

Wander Beauty Mile High Club™ Length and Define Mascara

“Finally: I’ve found the best lengthening, volumizing, and defining mascara that doesn’t leave my lashes clumpy. It’s waterproof but easy to take off at the end of the day. With just a couple of swipes, my lashes are equally lengthened and give that flirty, doe-eyed look that I’m 100% obsessed with.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

19/99 Precision Color Pencil

“Maybe controversial these days, but I’ll never give up on lining my lower eyelid! I started tightlining for a night out during the peak 90s grunge revival/indie sleaze era in high school and I’ve never given it up. I’ve gone through many an eyeliner pencil, and when you’re lining that close to your eye, you need something that glides across your lid. I’ve never used anything as effective or smooth in just one swipe than this 19/99 color pencil.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Glo Skin Beauty Oil Free Tinted Primer

Any good desert island product needs to be a multitasker—and this primer is the ultimate. It gives a lightweight coverage with a blurring effect to hide pores, nourishing skincare ingredients, plus SPF 30. I wear it on its own to work out in the morning, then layer my makeup on top during the day. Color-correcting, evening out skin tone and texture, and boosting your makeup’s wear-time—it truly does it all!” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

City Lips Plumping Lip Gloss

“I had ditched lip glosses long ago, not loving how sticky and too high-shine the majority were. But this gloss offers the perfect amount of moisture for a dewy pout. What’s more, not only does it look good, but it also offers a dramatic plumping effect immediately and then gradually builds over time. Formulated with hyaluronic acid and oligopeptides, it volumizes lips while offering major hydration.” — Isabelle, Managing Editor

MERIT Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Foundation and Concealer Stick

“As someone who has previously opted for more full-coverage makeup, I haven’t worn foundation in all of 2024, thanks to MERIT Beauty’s Perfecting Stick. Marketed as not a foundation and not a concealer, this one product has replaced both in my makeup bag. I apply it under my eyes, on any blemishes, and on my high points, then blend with a brush for an even, lightweight base.” — Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40 Skincare Foundation

“This is hands down the best tinted moisturizer I’ve ever used. The formula is filled with good-for-your-skin ingredients like niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, so it’s a beauty buy that doubles as a skincare product. Plus, it’s ideal for getting that dewy and glazed donut-y look.” — Megan Beauchamp, Contributing Editor

Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick

“Blush is by far my favorite part of my makeup routine. I’ve perfected the ultimate three-step blush application that keeps its color and glow all day and night. The base? Westman Atelier’s blush stick in Petal. The non-toxic, creamy formula coupled with the prettiest rose-y color makes this product worth every penny. Steps two and three involve setting the cream blush with a powder blush, and topping it all off with an honorable mention, Charlotte Tilbury’s Highlighter Wand in Pinkgasm.— Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara

It’s everything you want from a mascara: elongates lashes, doesn’t pill or smudge, and—most importantly—washes off easily. You normally get one or two but not all three. I don’t know how they do it, but I’ve been wearing this mascara for 3+ years and it’s my forever go-to.” — Brittany Chatburn, Content Marketing Director

Kulfi Beauty Kajal Eyeliner in Rain Check

As someone who rarely wears makeup, it probably seems interesting that my choice for a desert island would be blue eyeliner. But on days when I just need to infuse my look with a little pop and joy, this eyeliner works its magic. I use a very thin line of blue eyeliner, but it’s just enough that when I’m talking to people while wearing it, they almost always have to stop and call out how much they love the blue. It’s the perfect way to subtly elevate your eyes, and the formula is super creamy and easy enough for even me to apply.” — Suruchi Avasthi, Food Editor

Jones Road Miracle Balm

“The Jones Road Miracle Balm is a game-changer for anyone seeking a no-makeup makeup look. It is ultra-moisturizing on the face and gives an effortlessly natural look with a dewy, radiant finish. Apply it with your fingers or a brush, which makes it the perfect low-maintenance desert island product. The balm is incredibly easy to use and buildable. It’s the perfect hero product for minimalist beauty routines.” — Brandy Joy Smith, Motherhood Contributor

Chanel Le Rouge Duo Ultra Tenue

“There is no better lip stain on the market and I will die on that hill. I’ve been using this product for YEARS. My favorite colors are Bright Raspberry, Strawberry Red, and Soft Rose, but you can’t go wrong on any to your liking. The stain stays on ALL day and ALL night, isn’t drying with the gloss coating, and doesn’t transfer to your drinking glass or partner’s lips.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm

“The Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm is nothing short of magic and would accompany me on a desert island or tropical getaway. Its buttery texture and long-lasting hydration make it the best product to always have on hand. I just repurchased it in Vanilla for the third time—it’s that good!” — Anna Decker, Social Media and E-Commerce Manager

Supergoop! Glowscreen in Golden Hour

“I am no one until I put on my Supergoop! Glowscreen in the morning. It quite literally brings me to life, adding the perfect amount of color and glow to my otherwise tired-looking face. I wear it alone on a day-to-day basis, but this sunscreen is also the perfect shimmery base for my makeup routine (even at night). Major props to Supergoop! for making sunscreen such an addicting part of my skincare/makeup routine. My skin will thank you in 20 years!” — Bridget Chambers, Style Editor

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

“Listen, I know this product had its moment in 2022. But there hasn’t been a night since I treated myself to this lip mask two years ago where I don’t put this stuff on before bed. Long story short, it’s my ride-or-die. My lips stay soft and hydrated year-round and I haven’t had chapped lips once, even in winter. My go-to is vanilla!” — Kristen Garaffo, Design Editor

Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops

“I live for a faux glow. A bit of self tan instantly boosts my confidence and I’ve tried everything from lotions to foams to water. Hands down, my favorite is Isle of Paradise Self Tanning Drops. A few drops in your moisturizer turns it into a self tanner, plus you can apply it without a mitt. It’s so easy and you can control how deep your tan is by the amount of drops you use. I love!” — Kristen Garaffo, Design Editor

Tower28 Beauty SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray with Hypochlorous Acid

“This product changed my life, and I can’t stop talking about it to everyone. The start of my skincare routine, a top off when my skin is feeling irritated, and a preventive measure before applying makeup so I don’t break out—I use this multiple times a day, every day. If you haven’t heard of this universal healing spray, it’s quite literally magic in a bottle.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Skin Pharm Sheer Defense SPF

When I first tried this SPF, I was in shock. A hydrating and tinted sunscreen? How? Diving in further, I saw that it contains hyaluronic acid. I love how lightweight and dewy my skin feels. If I’m on a deserted island, I’m going to need a good SPF that helps even out my skin tone for a flawless glow.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm + Red Correct

I’ve been searching my entire life for a product like Hero Cosmetics’ Rescue Balm. As someone who suffers from rosacea, regular foundation doesn’t cut it when it comes to a flawless face. This is THE product for me—and it’s always the first product I reach for on no-make, makeup days. It goes on green, with the same consistency as a concealer, but blends effortlessly into the skin, combatting any redness. It’s lightweight, and can be applied under makeup or on its own. Simply put—I couldn’t live without it.” — Casey McKee, Editorial Intern

Dr. Loretta Intense Replenishing Serum

“This ceramide serum is my secret for putting on/taking off makeup. Layered beneath my makeup, it’s the perfect primer that creates a canvas to help my products stay on all night. I use a ton of liquid-based products, so a hydrated face is key to making sure they look dewy all night and don’t dry and crack in the middle of the dance floor. And after the night ends, when I’ve scrubbed my face raw to get off all the products, I need a hydrating serum to replenish my complexion so I wake up refreshed—even after a late night. This versatile serum is both. I also slather it on my skin when my barrier needs some TLC. It’s a staple in my travel bag since it can do it all.” — Langa Chinyoka, Beauty Editor

Bondi Sands Technocolor 1 Hour Express Self Tanning Foam

My favorite self-tanning product, hands down. It’s foolproof to apply and the color develops within an hour. I use the one made for olive skin tones, and it gives the impression that you’ve just come back from an exotic two-week holiday.” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

Renee Rouleau Mint Renewal Cleanser

“I can’t stop talking about this product. I love it so much that my mom bought it for me when I went back to Nebraska to visit. The peppermint oil feels so refreshing and the light exfoliating jojoba beads keep my skin glowing.” — Kelly Krause, Contributing Editor

Soma Ayurvedic Jasmine Body Oil

“My favorite part of my self-care routine in the evening is using body oil after a hot shower. This oil has the most incredible scent, and seamlessly absorbs into your skin, leaving it soft and hydrated. Plus, this oil makes for the most perfect, self-care moment to just pause and breathe. It’s definitely a little bit of a splurge, but it’s well worth it for how amazing it makes me feel.” — Suruchi Avasthi, Food Editor

DERMAFLASH LUXE+ Advanced Sonic Dermaplaning + Peach Fuzz Removal

“My favorite self-tanning product, hands down. It’s foolproof to apply and the color develops within an hour. I use the one made for olive skin tones, and it gives the impression that you’ve just come back from an exotic two-week holiday.” — Camille Styles, Editor-in-Chief

The post Calling All Hot Sleepers—These Summer Bedding Ideas Were Made for You appeared first on Camille Styles.

Summer is here, and with it comes al fresco dining, fun beach reads, and, yes—sweaty, sleepless nights. Hot sleepers, you know what we’re talking about. But we’ve all experienced evenings when an open window is just no use, your fan (even though it’s working overtime) feels like it’s just blowing hot air around the room, and you just can’t quite get comfortable despite all your tossing and turning.

Summer Bedding Ideas to Stay Stylish and Cool

For summer bedding ideas that make hot nights bearable and, dare we say, enjoyable, we tapped Genevieve Rosen Biller, cofounder of the Australia-based linen bedding company Bed Threads. Because the right set-up can make all the difference. “Temperature has a substantial impact on the quality of your sleep, and it’s difficult to get comfortable when you feel too hot,” she explains. “Lightweight, breathable bedding in natural fibers will help you to stay cool and ensure you have a good night’s sleep. There’s nothing worse than tossing and turning in sweaty sheets.” (Agreed!)

Ahead, Genevieve fills us in on how to make the perfect summer bed, including some of her go-to products from Bed Threads.

Genevieve is one of the founders of Bed Threads, a company that offers high-quality, 100% French flax linen bedding that is affordable, accessible, and sold in convenient sets.

What are the best fabrics for curating a bed for hot summer nights?

While cotton is a natural material, good-quality cotton sheets have a high thread count. This can compromise their breathability as the threads are woven tightly together so the air can’t move through them easily, and heat can become trapped at night.

Linen, on the other hand, is one of the lightest and most breathable fabrics on the market, keeping cool air circulating through its loosely woven fibers. It also contains a higher moisture absorbency, making it the perfect choice for anyone who hates a sweaty night’s sleep.

What bedding do you recommend stowing during the summer season?

In summer, I recommend stashing away unnecessary blankets and throws and opting for more lightweight bedding that can be layered if warmth is needed and removed if too hot. It’s also time to put away your heavy down duvet insert in favor of a temperature-regulating one or try a quilted bed cover instead for that cozy feeling without the heaviness.

What simple swaps can people make so they don’t have to invest in an entirely new sheet set?

Swapping heavy covers like blankets and duvet inserts for lighter ones or even sleeping with just a top sheet in a natural fibre is a simple swap you can make to stay cool while you sleep.

Investing in 100% French flax linen sheets will also serve you year-round, as linen is naturally temperature regulating, meaning it takes its cues to what’s going on both on your body and in the air around you and adjusts its heat accordingly. For this reason, it keeps you cool in summer and toasty in winter, so you can sleep in the same sheets regardless of the season.

What are your go-to bedding products for summer?

In the fall and winter months, I tend to opt for cosy, earthy hues, so I welcome the change of season by switching up the color scheme to a palette of cooling tones, like mineral and sage. I also really love a neutral look for summer, and our newest colorway, creme, is luxurious and elegant. If bright colors are more your style, nothing says summer quite like a vibrant wildflower duvet paired with fresh white sheets.

On the nights that I find a duvet is too hot, a quilted bed cover is great as a lighter alternative, and I also love our muslin throws for those nights I need an extra layer without adding excessive bulk or warmth—they’re so lightweight and soft.

How do you feel about top sheets? Give us your hot take.

I love the look and feel of a top sheet and think it’s the ideal addition for balmy summer nights to have something covering me when it feels too hot or constricting to have a duvet on. It’s really a matter of personal preference though. Certainly, we are finding some people choose to forgo the flat sheet for a modern aesthetic that is neat and simple, and skipping the flat sheet means making the bed is much quicker in the mornings!

Any additional tips for staying cool on hot summer nights?

Create a cool, dark environment by keeping curtains and blinds closed during the day to stop the sun warming up your room. Keep a window cracked and your door open if you can, to help air circulate through your room late at night. If you have aircon, keep the doors to rooms you don’t use closed so your cool air can flow into the areas you are spending time in. And finally, the fabric you wear to bed matters, too. Wearing pajamas in a lightweight fabric like French flax linen will help you to feel cool and comfortable.

8 Renter-Friendly Design Tips To Make Your Space Feel Like Home https://camillestyles.com/design/interior-design-tips-for-renters/ https://camillestyles.com/design/interior-design-tips-for-renters/#respond Tue, 18 Jun 2024 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=271459 Even your landlord will swoon.

I have lived in rented homes all of my adult life. In my early 20s, I didn’t think it was worth the effort to personalize a rental—this was a temporary space, so why bother? Over time, however, I realized I didn’t feel relaxed or at ease in my home. The beige walls, overhead lighting and thrown-together furniture and decor I had left me feeling unsettled. Learning how to turn my rented apartment into a home was the beginning of my love affair with interior design.

8 Interior Design Tips for Renters

Through trial and error, I’ve discovered that living in a rental doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style or a personalized space just because you don’t own your home. There is so much you can do—from paint and wallpaper to upgrading fixtures and lighting. Ahead, I’ve rounded up the best interior design tips for renters from my personal experience in turning beige boxes into warm and stylish homes.

Maximalist bright kitchen paint.

Paint

Rental walls usually come in a safe, neutral beige which may appear… well, a bit boring. The best interior design tip for renters I can give is to love up on your walls. Give them a makeover by adding a bit of color or by choosing a neutral that suits you better. Even taking your walls from a beige to a crisp white will brighten up your space significantly. Most landlords have no problem with paint as long as you’re willing to paint the walls back to the original color once you move out, or they may let you keep it.

One of my favorite things to paint is the interior of my front door. My current landlord, as well as my previous one, said I can leave it as is when it’s time to move out. I love pink, so my front door is Sherwin-Williams Coral Perfection. It’s a delightful pop of color that makes me smile every time I look at it. Plus, it makes our entryway is cheery and inviting. The whole project was less than $20—proving that paint is an affordable way to make a big impact in your space.

Peel and Stick Products

A round-up of interior design tips for renters wouldn’t be complete without giving peel and stick products a major shout-out. Peel and stick is incredible for renters, since they’re temporary solutions for bigger projects that would normally require renovation. Here are a few of my favorites.

Peel and stick wallpaper

If painting is a no-go, peel and stick wallpaper is an excellent option for zhuzhing up your walls. I am a huge fan of adding peel and stick wallpaper anywhere your heart desires. Create a statement wall in your living room or make your powder room pop with a bold color or pattern. I’ve added peel and stick wallpaper to my kitchen, my laundry room, and most recently my home office.

Wallpaper has completely transformed these spaces, and I couldn’t be more pleased with how they’ve turned out. Plus, removable is a breeze—I’ve had no wall damage when I’ve removed peel and stick wallpaper. There are tons of installation YouTube videos you can watch, but I will say from personal experience that it’s not quite as easy as it looks. Don’t be afraid to hire a TaskRabbit or wallpaper pro to get the job done!

Peel and stick floor tile

Renter floors can range anywhere from vinyl to tile to even hardwood. Peel and stick floor tile now makes it possible for renters to update their floors in a temporary and affordable way. I’ve never tried them myself, but peel and stick floor tiles look fantastic in a kitchen or powder room. They can make an outdated floor feel current without costing a ton as well.

Be sure to thoroughly clean your floors and allow them to dry before applying, and map the tiles out before sticking them to the floor. There are adorable floor tile designs out there, from checkerboard tile to starbursts, and loads of color options as well. And just like with any renter-friendly project, check in with your landlord and be prepared for removal when it’s time to move out!

Peel and stick backsplash

One day when I have an unlimited budget for my home, I will add gorgeous tile to my kitchen. Until then, a peel and stick backsplash will do the trick. It is totally possible to update a rental kitchen without a big renovation. Peel and stick backsplashes range from thin sheets to peel and stick ceramic tiles, so you can pick and choose what works best for you, your budget and your rental.

Be sure to look for peel and stick backsplash that is heat and water-resistant, and make sure the product is appropriate for your specific project. Peel and stick tiles are not only suitable for kitchen backsplashes, but also bathroom vanities, fireplaces, and laundry rooms to name a few.

A bathroom with warm wood and wall sconces

Add Puck Lights

Overhead lighting is my personal nemesis. Instead of relying on big overhead lights, fill your rental with both table and standing lamps. This will create a much more relaxed atmosphere. For an even cozier touch, utilize puck lights. These battery operated lights often come with a sticky adhesive so you can place them under cabinets for gorgeous accent lighting that looks especially lovely at night.

Puck lights also make wall sconces renter-friendly, with no hardwiring required. Sconce lighting instantly elevates your space and can add a cozy, personalized lighting effect to your entryway, bedside, or over framed art or pictures.

Bold lighting fixture living room.

Update Lighting Fixtures

Ah, the dreaded boob light. Most rentals are full of them, but that doesn’t mean they have to stay. An interior design tip for renters that many aren’t aware of is that it’s possible to update lighting fixtures. You can do it yourself (just be sure to turn off all the breakers!) or bring in an electrician. I’ve swapped a dated dining room light fixture for a woven pendant that is much more my style and it makes a huge difference in our space.

I have my eyes set on swapping our overhead entryway light, and even bathroom light fixtures as well. Personalized lighting fixtures can take a boring, neutral space and turn it into one full of character. Just be prepared to take your incredible vintage chandelier with you when it’s time to move out.

Shower head design tips for renters.

Give Your Shower Head an Upgrade

There’s nothing more deflating than a shower with dismal water pressure. My current home came equipped with a handheld shower head that had a very gentle flow of water. I’m not especially fond of shower heads that detach and the water pressure just wasn’t doing it for me. A simple swap couldn’t have been easier, and I now have a spa-like shower with water pressure I find suitable. Most shower heads can be removed simply by unscrewing them, and I applied my fixed shower head in minutes.

Swap Out Your Switch Plates

The little details in your home are everything. Even the smallest of swaps can make an impact in your space. One of my favorites is swapping out switch plates. Your renter switch plates probably match the beige walls, which is less than exciting. But there are many decorative options to choose from to match whatever your aesthetic may be.

Decorative switch plates usually don’t cost more than $20, and they come in brass finishes, different colors and prints, and some even have wavy perimeters. Switch plates don’t come with matching screws, but a little bit of nail polish on the top is an easy way to blend the screw in with the rest of the plate.

One of the simplest joys in my life right now is walking through my neighborhood and admiring my neighbors’ hydrangea bushes. Not every house has them, but the ones that do exude effortless beauty. They’re a burst of pink or blue blooms that I’m savoring, since I know hydrangea season doesn’t last forever. They remind me that color makes an incredible impact, especially when it’s part of a garden in front of your home. The lush pink blooms are friendly and inviting. They emit an air of playfulness, while the deep blue hydrangea bushes seem more peaceful and grounded in their beauty. Garden color schemes clearly set the mood for your outdoor living spaces, and it’s a step you don’t want to skip when planning your garden.

If you’d like to plant a garden but aren’t sure where to begin, I chatted with mother-daughter duo Brooke and Leila Giannetti, garden designers at Patina Meadow, as well as Madeline Hooper, host of the PBS TV show Garden Fit, to get their pro tips on all things garden color schemes. Ahead, learn how to design your garden with color in mind, as well as the best color schemes to try yourself!

Hydrangea bushes garden color scheme.

Where to Begin When Planning Your Garden

Before you head to the nursery, both Giannetti’s suggest taking time to think about the mood you want to set, as well as the intention you have for your outdoor space and garden. “Are you looking to grow food for your family? Are you trying to create a space mostly for visual interest? Either way, there are a few design tips to keep in mind,” the duo suggests.

Just like you would an interior space, they encourage using hedges and trees to enclose spaces, like an outdoor room. “This creates a sense of intimacy and privacy, almost like different rooms in a house.” As far as picking which plants and flowers are right for your garden, Hooper says to lead with your heart and to not think too hard about what’s right or wrong. “Surround yourself with colors you love,” she says. “Allow yourself to react to what surprises you and delights you about a garden.”

Hooper also suggests noticing what plants and flowers are working for your neighbors—that means the conditions you both share work well! And finally, if you’re feeling nervous as a beginner gardener, Hooper encourages taking some pressure off and to have fun. “It truly doesn’t matter how you start. You make mistakes. Plants die. You learn by trial and error!” she exclaims.

Why a Color Palette Is Important

“A garden color scheme provides unity and coherence in garden design. It ensures that all elements work together harmoniously, creating a space that is not only visually appealing, but also emotionally resonant,” the Giannetti’s share. “A cohesive color palette helps avoid visual clutter and creates a sense of calm and order, which is particularly important in a garden meant for relaxation and enjoyment.”

If you’re not sure what colors look best together, or just feel afraid to commit, Hooper suggests pots to start. “You don’t have to make the commitment to dig them into the ground necessarily,” she remarks. Knowing what colors and flowers you’re drawn to—as well as the ambience you’d like your outdoor space to have—will set the tone for creating the garden of your dreams.

“Ultimately, your garden should reflect your tastes and preferences. Choose colors that make you happy and create a space where you love to spend time!” the Giannetti’s add.

Four Garden Color Schemes We Love

You can’t go wrong with the following garden color schemes, recommended by Hooper and the Giannetti’s. Ranging from sweet and soft to dramatic and bold, choose the garden color scheme that speaks to your heart—as well as the outdoor space you’re longing to create.

Soft Pastels

If you envision a garden fit for afternoon reading, morning meditation sessions, or casual dinner parties, a pastel color palette would be the dream. “We absolutely adore soft pastel palettes—light lavenders, pale pinks, and soft whites. This combination evokes feelings of calm, serenity, and soothing tranquility,” the Gianetti’s share. Hooper is also a fan of this color palette. “In my garden around the pool, I like to stick to cool pastel colors that go with the water color and gray stone coping,” she explains.

Hooper loves various shades of pinks, blues and yellows and shares that Achillea moonshine, Astilbe ‘Peach Blossom’ and Geranium Roxanne look better and better in her garden each year. Both Giannetti’s love mixing purple with pink or white. “For a soft pastel palette, we would use plants like lavender and thyme, which not only add beautiful pastel hues but also a wonderful scent,” they share. “Pair these with pink and white roses or hydrangeas. The key is to maintain a limited palette and focus on texture for added interest.”

Deep, Rich Hues

If you have an eye for the dramatic and want your home to pop, darker colors may be more your speed. The Giannetti’s recommend pairing deep, rich florals with lush greenery. “Dark tulips in spring, and rich purple hydrangeas in summer are excellent choices,” they advise. “Complement these with foliage plants like boxwoods and yews to add some structure, while complementing the color scheme. You could even add blackberry vines to add a functional touch of rich beauty!”

Blackberry vines will, of course, produce fruit and the berries will turn from a deep red to black as they ripen, naturally providing a beautifully rich color palette. Another option? Orange and yellow blossoms provide stark contrast to deep purple blooms, making purple and orange an unexpected, yet beautiful color scheme to try. Mix gold and orange avens (Geum spp.) or yellow Hollyhock Alcea ’Spotlight Sunshine’ with purple or crimson scabiosa (or pincushion flower) for a stunning jewel-toned garden.

Monochromatic

A garden color scheme doesn’t need to include multiple colors. In fact, going monochromatic and picking just one color is a fantastic choice, especially if you have a color you’re especially fond of. For Hooper, that color is red. “The dramatic effect of planting beds or borders of one color is also a fun challenge, and for years I have had a red color-themed bed that I adore,” she gushes. “It’s more upkeep because I have to replant Dahlias Bishop of Llandaff each season, but they look great with red peonies, Dianthus Telstar Scarlet, and Echinacia purpurea ‘Sombrero Salsa Red’.”

“Combining different blooms in similar colors—like light lavenders from herb plants such as lavender and thyme, with pink and white rose varieties or hydrangeas—adds depth and variety without overwhelming the senses,” the Giannetti’s note. As with any garden color scheme, decide on the mood you want to create for your garden, then choose your color accordingly. A blue garden with blue hydrangeas, Phlox paniculata ‘Blue Boy’ or Delphinium ‘Million Dollar Blue’ will be calm and serene. A yellow garden with Alchemilla mollis or Baptisia ‘Caroline Moonlight’ will be bright and cheerful.

Keep in mind that a monochromatic garden can include various shades of the same hue, so don’t be afraid to plan your purple garden with pale lavenders as well as deep purples that almost read black. “Even with a limited color palette, you can create a lot of visual interest through texture,” the Giannetti’s add.

Rewilding

If you’re interested in a maximalist color palette where anything goes, rewilding is a garden trend you’ll love. Also referred to as meadowscaping, this garden trend relies on native grasses and wildflowers being allowed to grow freely.

“This idea of garden chaos being positive is a big deal,” Hooper remarks. “If you want different colors, you can do that, and it looks smashing.” If you have dreams of running through your own wildflower meadow, see what many would typically consider weeds in a new light. “Whatever seeds are in the soil—let them grow,” Hooper suggests. “Then keep what you like, and pull out what you don’t like.”

You can learn what is native to your area by doing a quick search through the National Audubon Society. From there, notice what colors and plants you’re drawn to. Because rewilding is in fact a bit wild, your color palette can remain simple if that’s more your vibe. Stick with a monochromatic palette and choose flowers in the same shade, or select up to four different hues for a multi-color meadowscape.
